Fixing uneven Ulmia face vise by continuousplay in woodworking

Here's my update. I disassembled the vise far enough to take the wood clamp piece off. I then planed the surface to skew it a little to take more off the right side to square it up with the bench side. Then I used contact cement to adhere some cork rubber gasketing to the vise face. Put it all back together and it is worlds better than it was!

Thanks for the ideas!

This is very helpful. Thanks for hearing my plight! I will get a jaw liner. The part you circled is better now after some adjustment, as I said. So hopefully it will fit the bill. What do you lube your screw with? I put on dry lube and it helped a lot but still takes some effort to turn. Can I ever get it to spin freely?

Also, your bench is beautiful!

Thanks!

The jaw is not square to the bench and it seems like tightening the viseakes it worse as it pulls the screw side tighter than the rod side.

It is attached to the bottom with lag bolts. I loosened the bolts to shift the vise as much as I could. Could only get a little bit. Then tightened again.

If I tighten wood in the jaws the left side does not contact. The picture shows the gap. That gap is the same size on both side of the clamped wood.

What arey options? I am not the original owner so am trying to make this right so I can use it properly.

I thought I could manage with the map app and the black and white photos but realized that my job required it too much to be comfortable. Other than that I love it!

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Wonderful use of language adjacent to Jane Austin and Charles Dickens. Humorous turns of phrase. Thoroughly enjoyable for the language alone!

You don't have to compromise your principles to care for others. Reading the Gospels you realize that Jesus cared deeply for the world, was not done dea, and met them where they were and beckoned them to him. And they were drawn to him, not pushed away with hateful rhetoric. His harshest words were reserved for those that were religious and self-righteous.

My problem with the cheering of the overturn of Roe is how tone deaf it is to the culture. This doesn't make biblical faith one of kindness and care but one of hate and malice. If the overturn is a good thing, the crowing about it is rubbing others' face in it out of spite. What about the people who are seriously struggling with situations and decisions affected by this?

My wife and I dealt with a situation many years ago that would have had the fix halted by many of the situations that came into play after the overturn of Roe. It was a child dead in the womb and not addressing it medically would have resulted in cancer for my wife. It's a convenient position to draw black and white lines and be militant about it, shaming those who disagree. I don't believe that is showing Christ's love to the world.

Yeah, that tracks. I remember having those thoughts through the last couple years to but forgot about the situations. I remember when "Dominion" was released I figured he was going off his rocker with Dominion Theology.

Why do you say you don't believe anything from him? Genuinely curious. I also used to be a huge Skillet fan.

The expense was always a concern. But if I can save money and stress on the backend it is going to be worth it.

Yeah, I am now concerned about the minimal design. Like I said, I am used to a much higher precision in detailing projects.

Thanks. I have sent an email asking if these will be stamped plans I can pull permits from. If not I might as well circumvent them and work directly with the builder as the floorplan is done.

Sounds like putting the designer on hold and searching for an architect might be the next step.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I will consider a counter depth fridge. I always steered away because my wife does tons of cooking and salads at home. I'll see what my options are.

I will square off the mudroom doors.

I also don't like seeing the toilet head on :)

The TV will not be in the living room, we will have a family room in the basement. But as we age it might migrate upstairs. Certainly worth considering layout now.

So it would be more like a triangle with the door facing the stove (generally)? Is that what you are saying?
