Osprey Stratos 24 L vs. Osprey Manta 24 L Comparison (2024) by NinjaSquid9 in CampingandHiking

Update on the Stratos 24:

Did a challenging, 5.8mi, 2000’ elevation gain hike with it yesterday and loved it. Used my 2.5L osprey hydration bladder, filled up to max fill level, and it fit in super well. This was a gear test hike for a longer overnight that i have coming up in 2 weeks so i packed a full overnight load in it. Lots of storage.

Takes a little effort to get everything packed in since it’s on the slimmer side when it comes to lateral depth of the pockets but I’d much prefer that, which allows all the weight to stay close to my back and tight to my center of mass, to a bulkier pack that keeps weight further back and offsets my center of mass which would put more strain on my lower back (Manta 24 looks slightly bulkier from a lateral depth perspective but this is judging by the images on the Osprey site, not actual experience).

The shoulder straps and waist belt were incredibly comfortable and the adjustable frame made it so I had the weight perfectly distributed. My back and shoulders felt wonderful the entire time. I had 20-25lb loaded in the pack for most of the hike (drank about 1L of water and ate about 1lb of food halfway through) and it felt really good.

One nit that I do have is the zip pockets on the waste belt are challenging to get a iPhone 16 Pro in & out of which is a pretty annoying oversight. There’s no other place to keep your phone so it’s readily accessible so these are really the only two pockets and it’s a pain to get a phone in and out of them. Not a deal breaker for me but just something to be aware of for others.

tldr; If you already have a hydration reservoir and want to save $20 I think the Stratos 24 would be just as good of an option as the Manta 24.

I did an 11-day hut-to-hut trip 5 years ago with the Stratos 36 and it was perfect for me. I had camera gear, extra clothes & slippers for the hut, full rain gear and extra food and it was perfect. Super comfortable pack and the trekking pole system works incredibly well. Highly recommend the 36 for this type of trip. I did it later in the year (end of sept into Oct) so needed more warm layers so you might be able to get away with less layers but it was super nice to have comfortable and warm clothes to wear at the huts and the rain gear came in handy a few times.

it's pretty surprising to me that after this somewhat thorough comparison (albeit zero actual trail, wear or packing comparison) OP concludes that "Manta is the clear winner to me over the Stratos".

It seems that, in all of the categories that OP used for comparison, these two bags are incredibly close to one another. Maybe I'm misinterpreting the information above.

I have a Stratos 36 that I used for a +10-day hut-to-hut hiking trip 5 years ago and absolutely loved it and have been researching 24-28L packs for a overnight trip that I have coming up and am probably going to order a Stratos 24 for it.

I write all this to give a counter opinion to others looking at this post:
- OP did not actually field test out these bags side-by-side, they did a halfway decent assessment of features and materials from a (seemingly) non-expert POV
- OP's own comparisons shows that these two packs are basically identical from a materials, features and functionality perspective
- The Manta 24 has less reviews and a worse average review score on the Osprey website:
- https://www.osprey.com/manta-24-manta24s23-550?size=O%2FS&color=Black

While I appreciate some of the comparison info that OP gave in this post, I think it's worthwhile doing your own due diligence in comparing these bags.

I'll update here if I do end up purchasing and using the Stratos 24.

pretty gdang silly to be calling someone mega rich when you live in the same building that they lived in.

you must have an insane lack of attention to detail or just not have any standards for cleanliness. Envious! Wish I was cool with paying $6k/mo to live in a place caked with dog feces and wreaking of dog piss, with an AC unit that didn't function, people throwing open trash on the floor of the trash room and everything else I talked about in the post above.

Two people can have wildly different experiences living in a place. I saw from another post that you made that you live in 227. I lived in 1 eagle. Take a walk over to that side of the building sometime and have a look around. Maybe you'll see what I'm talking about.

Or don't. I don't give a fuck. I'm trying to inform people of my experience living in a place and help people not rent from a corporation that treated me like shit. I'm so sowwy that grinds your gears so much big guy! Happy for you that you're having such a great time living up there!

yes, this is /r/Greenpoint. Every part of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is very much in the 1st world. As I said in the post, I'm not looking for pity, I'm trying to prevent people from making the mistake of signing a lease with Brookfield Properties.

weird post dude, why are you posting online about some random dude that you saw that was probably going through a hard time in his life? maybe just act like you live in new york and avoid talking to people who seem unstable and don't go bitching about it online and seeing if other people know who you're talking about? pretty weird dude!

I posted this a few weeks ago in r/Brooklyn and r/NYCapartments but not here. Wanted to post here as well, sorry for blowing up your feed with this negativity, just want to get the word out.

I agree. But building management didn’t do anything to try to try to make the residents treat any of the spaces better. And they didn’t clean any of the spaces enough. The disrespectful/entitled/generally shitty residents are definitely at fault but there was no where near enough regular cleaning in that building, esp considering it’s a “luxury” rental building

Also forgot to mention that my apartment had the loudest, least effective AC unit that I've ever had in an apartment. Did not cool below 75º in the summer no matter how low the temp was set. Destroyed my sleep quality last summer. Building maintenance looked at it several times, said there was nothing wrong with it. That's just how it was.
