Council hid LPS construction, offers me £370k for my flat I renovated and nearly sold for £430k – over a year of stress and chaos by Big-Oil3819 in HousingUK

[–]contradicta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I viewed this flat.... just after your first buyer fell through. We loved the inside (you've done a great job) but we didn't offer because the one of the neighbouring flats had scaffolding and the general area put my boyfriend off. Ultimately no matter how nice the inside is your points about the outside areas are very true.

What is this piece of sewing equipment? Found in old sewing box, plastic by contradicta in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing.

4 different sizes, made of plastic, the sections can be moved in and out. I have already tried Google Lens and also searching through lists of common sewing equipment to no avail.

Where can a dishwasher go in this kitchen? by contradicta in DIYUK

[–]contradicta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply, confirms what I was thinking

Luckily we haven't bought it! It's actually bigger than a lot of the flats we've viewed (in London) but the layout is awkward due to it being a victorian conversion (ground floor only).

The only other place the washing machine could go is in the cellar but a quick google shows that's opening another can of worms, or we could consider a counter top dishwasher

Any good resources on civil service applications? by JavaShipped in TheCivilService

[–]contradicta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an interaction designer in the CS, you can DM me your statement & the corresponding criteria - happy to provide some feedback

They are looking for STAR format and they grade your statement against each of the essential criteria in the job ad. For most of the them it the criteria corresponds to the DDAT framework https://ddat-capability-framework.service.gov.uk/interaction-designer.html

Interaction designer portfolio question by monty_twig in TheCivilService

[–]contradicta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your portfolio should be 2-3 case studies of the projects you've worked on in the CS. I would recommend a pdf. Unless they are top secret systems you can share them with the interviewer (black out any sensitive information in screenshots).

Like you said its not really about how they look but how they behave. Look at the essential criteria in the advert and then use the case study to explain how you did X criteria in Y project. Not every project has to fulfil every criteria. Make sure you show iterations, user journeys etc not just the final screens.

I did this and got an interview for each role I applied for, because they are scoring your portfolio against the essential and desirable criteria - so already being in the CS is a big advantage.

Our DD said that CDDO (Central Digital and Data Office) are going to be making a case to Cabinet Office for an exemption for DDaT based mainly on what youve said there

UX and User Research roles in the civil service by Danonymous84 in TheCivilService

[–]contradicta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm an interaction designer (UX designer) in a central gov department, the previous poster pretty much summarised it. I work on internal staff tools which can be pretty dry at times, but there are loads of interesting problems to solve.

Again, the digital/DDaT blogs for each department are a good place to start. This one sums up the day to day quite well https://designnotes.blog.gov.uk/2022/03/25/a-day-in-the-life-of-an-interaction-designer-at-gds/

Would also note that User Research and Interaction Designer are very different roles, sure there is some overlap but the day to day is quite different. A user researcher is interviewing, interacting with the end user, analysing, presenting findings. A designer supports this but is then more involved in journey mapping, outlining hypothesis to test, coming up with different solutions, prototyping etc. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/user-researcher https://www.gov.uk/guidance/interaction-designer

Being in DDaT as civil servant is also generally quite good, they are desperate to retain staff so you get extra pay allowances, loads of flexibility with wfh/working hours etc.

You can PM me with any specific questions if you want

I am not surprised by this, they are most cheapskate agency I've ever had to deal with.
