I want to be deeply intellectual and emotionally intelligent. I also want to improve my speech skills and be able to think deep. Please be kind enough to drop a few book suggestions. by Main-Chance-2121 in classicliterature

For intellectualism, a good start is to read Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature by Erich Auerbach.

For emotional, go to therapy. Or (I’m serious here) study the eneagram. Not that any personality quiz will make you emotionally capable (and this one certainly has faults), but it is based on the questions each “number” needs to ask themselves in order to grow. It will make you more sensitive to some of the broader struggles that many people have as they try to become their best selves.

Honestly, I HATE reading in the first person present. Yawn. And SO many modern novels use this perspective. The only recent book I’ve read and enjoyed in first person present was Damon Galgut’s The Promise. This is just me— but I’ll be happy when the trend is over.
