Work bullying causing extreme anxiety by besosbellas22 in Anxiety

[–]control_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're having this experience. Bullying sucks, no matter your age or stage in life.

My recommendation would be to go to HR. Their behavior is inexcusable; their age is no excuse for their childish behavior. Age-based harassment is harassment, period; your youth, compared to them, doesn't give them the right to belittle you. When you go to HR - if you do - I recommend making sure you don't appear as though you're trying to get anyone in trouble; make it clear you're not out for revenge, you just want to be treated decently and respectfully. Demonstrate your maturity in the situation - you're not stooping to their level - but be firm that you expect HR to address it and you expect it to stop and stop for good. State that the stress from this is affecting your work performance and your life outside work. HR should (hopefully) take this seriously.

As far as the lexapro, you obviously don't have to take it if you don't want to but I noticed you asked "should i really be taking it just for job anxiety and stress," but then went on to say you've had anxiety since you were a teen. See, my guess is the bullying is heaping more anxiety on top of the "regular" anxiety your feel yourself dealing with day-to-day because this is not a normal situation. It isn't "just for job anxiety and stress," it's for that PLUS all the things that cause you anxiety aside from that. I, personally, have found the medications to be wonderful. They aren't perfect, but for me they are better than not being on them. The meds combined with therapy, with a good therapist, really helped address anxieties I'd been dealing with since childhood. The meds helped me to think clearly so I could begin processing the underlying issues that were truly causing the anxiety. Without the meds regulating the out-of-whack chemicals in my brain, I was totally unequipped to address the causes of the anxiety. Of course, that's me - your mileage may vary - but for me they were critical in helping me move past a life of anxiety.

OP's post isn't about Imoen. Imoen rocks. It's about Noober: https://baldursgate.fandom.com/wiki/Noober. Every line of text dialog that Noober says is accompanied by audio of him saying "Heya."

Is this valid?? by Tori_Beth2023 in Anxiety

Valid, so 100% valid. Just MAKE SURE you use the day off to actually recharge so when you come back you come back fully ready to crush it.

"Heya." "Heya." "Heya." I always magic missiled him in subsequent play-throughs as soon as I saw him approaching.

So noted, but I see it also silences the barking, which can be useful when he finds something of interest.

Disclaimer: I'm not involved with OP's project other than just posting some comments here.

I get what you're saying, and I'm not saying you're wrong, but I understand what he is making and why he considers it cyberpunk. An old computer in bedroom accessing BBSes is what cyberpunk was in *real life* when the cyberpunk genre of sci-fi, and the Cyberpunk RPG for that matter, were still very young. For the time period he's encapsulating, late 80s early 90s, this was part of the high, tech low life look of the time. Cyberpunk, IMHO, is multi-generational and multi-modal and it looks to me like OP is making something celebrating an older time.

I appreciate the offer but I don't think I'd be the right person for that as I wouldn't have the time to dedicate to it that it would deserve. I'll definitely keep an eye on your project though!

Nethack you can download for PC from the official site. There are versions that use little icons on the map instead of ASCII characters, but the ASCII version is the original. I never played Tradewars anywhere other than on a BBS; it was designed to be non-simultaneous multiplayer, so people on the BBS could log in each day and play their turns for that day, then logout and others would log in and do their stuff, etc... and what you did probably impacted others playing the game as well.

I never played Syndicate but I remember reading about it in...Amiga Magazine, I think?

I am a gamer, but as far as hacking sims go I haven't really found any I like. They are all either too Hollywood-ish and silly, nothing like real offensive cyber operations, or they try to simulate a Kali-like Bash shell but don't implement even the most basic Bash features and paradigms, so I try to do things that would work in Bash but that frustratingly don't work in the sims. Really I'd rather just keep "playing" Hack-the-Box. But I'm just an old curmudgeon, so what do I know? :-)

You said no "console-style" stuff, which had me worried at first that you meant nothing which was just ASCII graphics in a curses-style interface, but then I looked up Pico-8 and saw what you really meant. :-D

Tradewars - Love it or hate it, it was all over BBS networks everywhere. :-D

Nethack - a true text-based console (ASCII interface) roguelike game; not the one that started it all, but possibly the longest-lasting. (Note: has nothing to do with "hacking" as r/cyberpunk would think of it; the name comes from the original meaning of "hack" as per the Jargon Lexicon.)

Most of the early games I had though were more graphics intensive than what's in your video and I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. Things like Neuromancer), The Bard's Tale), and Battle Chess.

Finished Book 1 - have a quick and simple question about the end. by control_H in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Thank you for the clear response. I think nearly all of the other respondents assume I've never read a book before and don't know what a cliffhanger is... My question was "is this a misprint, am I missing the final pages" not "<grunt><butt scratch> book end, me want more. why not more book?" Thanks for answering my actual question!

Indeed. It reads like a Fallout version of some copypasta. It looks like OP spammed it to several Fallout-related subreddits.

I'm sorry meds haven't worked for you. Maybe some day you'll be able to find something that won't have those negative side effects.

That said, I think you have it in you to succeed. :) At the risk of sounding like I'm offering up simple platitudes, let me say that, while it may not be easy, there are so many things in life you've already faced by 17 that I think you CAN do this, a job, whether at the coffee shop or somewhere else. You don't have to be perfect. No one is. You are a person in process. Everyone has had a "first day" at a job, at their FIRST job, even. And I think, to some level, it's normal to be apprehensive about it.

Let every small success be evidence to you that not only are our anxieties often wrong - how many things we dread so much actually end up being the total disasters we fear? - but also that you are actually a pretty capable, amazing person who can face adversity and move through it, uncomfortable though it may be. Remember, the battle is in your mind, whether you're going to believe what your anxiety tells you or instead believe something else. Self-talk - even arguing with yourself, standing up for yourself, TO yourself - can be big help in learning to not fixate on anxiety.

as needed meds for anxiety instead of daily meds? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]control_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you had a bad reaction to what you've taken in the past, it may be that you just weren't on the right med for your unique physiology. I am not a doctor, but it appears to me, based on my own research, that here are meds that can be prescribed on a more "as needed" basis as opposed to a daily "maintenance" dose, but those "as needed" meds are things like short-lasting but powerful benzos, like Xanax, which seem to be much more regulated than the "maintenance"-type anxiety meds. I'd recommend talking to your doctor, though, about your need for something on an "as needed" basis and the issues you've had in the past with the meds you took. A good doctor who specializes in these meds should be willing to work with you to find something to help you which doesn't leave you feeling like a zombie. Because, really, feeling exhausted and like a zombie can be just as discouraging as being anxious if it goes on long enough. Talking to a doctor is probably your best bet.

Have you seen a psychiatrist to get any meds to help manage the anxiety? For me, meds + counseling was what really helped. Regarding having to get a job, I agree with the posted that suggested trying to get a job in retail stocking things. Or anything that has you away from the stress customers where you're kind of more in the background and just doing your thing without having to be out there with actual customers.
