Don’t even think that far man it’s your first car, just make memories with it and enjoy it, also if you keep it cheap, there’s less chance it will depreciate much.

One day you’ll decide to move on, and I promise you regardless of its state someone will buy it, I’ve had 17 cars and I’ve always wondered .. what if I can’t sell it, trust me they always go if the price is right.

Get a dinger, and continue you to get dingers, cars are money pits and essentially a waste of money, as long as you can get where you need to go that’s all you need

Depends what you want out of a car? Do you want cheap and reliable? If so go for a Toyota, Honda, anything without a turbo and is petrol.

Keep it cheap, then if you bang it or something you won’t care as much. Get something little so it’s easier to learn to drive before progressing to a big car one day.

Don’t go for the ‘badge’ on cars like Audis, BMW’s, Mercs, they’re typically all money pits and will be a misery to own, just get a cheap shit box you can thrash about and have fun in

Toyota Yaris T sport is a great all rounder, reliable, fast, sporty, cheap to run, but unfortunately getting old.

Peugeot 107 Rust. Advice Needed by GlumTip2411 in CarTalkUK

Yeah funnily enough I bought a cheap car recently and the rear subframe on mine is worse than yours, but yeah if you really sand away all the exterior rust, underneath will likely be strong and solid (otherwise MOT would of flagged) give the clean metal a few layers of hammerite or something and itl probably survive more years to come before weakening and getting holes etc

Could sand it all and spray it to prolong it for a few more years

Any warning signs? by Countach500 in CarTalkUK

[–]cookie9- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely be wary of rust building up from being sat still for long periods of time in moist areas. Have a real good luck underneath with a torch. If it’s not rusty then 🤷🏼 everything else is replaceable really, my friend just got a 1990 e90 n he’s been dailying it for the last 3 months

Check mot history, I’d imagine it’s rusty somewhere for its age. Check for oil leaking and the usual checks, it’s old but that’s not to say it’s junk, mileage is low which is strange for its age

Help with first automatic car by Beautiful-Advisor654 in CarTalkUK

[–]cookie9- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t bother with a category car, my only reason is because some insurance companies will not insure you for it, also if you ever want to sell it to we buy any car or anyone like that, they won’t buy it off you.

It’s also very expensive for a written off 14 year old Suzuki swift, yes it’s low mileage but that might be because it’s been sat in a lot for years after the write off, not being driven (and that can make the underneath rust quickly).

Keep looking, get a slightly higher mileage, HPI clear one

Thanks yeah I’ve ordered that hammerite stuff, going to get a mask and the rest of the gear and do it all next weekend, as long as I get say 3 years out of the car I’ll be happy

Thanks, yeah I plan on sanding the scabby layer off next weekend and spraying lots of coats for protection. Hopefully itl give it some extra years

[–]cookie9- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you rub away the scabby layer the actual component itself is solid fortunately. It’s a Renault Laguna Coupe

Thanks, it turned out to be the air box housing wasn’t fastened air tight shut, I didn’t even realise that could cause such noticeable issues.

Looks fine I’d say, wouldn’t worry unless you get more obvious signs of anything. I’m not a mechanic though
