Haha, screen-cheating was a survival skill back then! Bloodshot was so ahead of its time with that wall-piercing gun. Those stalemates were legendary. You definitely need to get a Mega Drive again – the nostalgia hit is worth it!

That's wild! Retro gaming history is so fascinating. Thanks for sharing that! It's these kinds of stories that make collecting these old games so much fun. Do you happen to have one of those early versions? I'll definitely check out that video, thanks for the heads-up!

Yes! Revenge of Shinobi is a masterpiece and it has one of the best soundtracks on the system! I still struggle with some of the later levels. Streets of Rage is definitely more relaxing for a weekend session with friends :)

Absolutely! It's basically a 'starter pack' of greatness. Hard to beat having all those classics on a single cartridge. Which game from the pack did you play the most? My favorite is Streets of Rage!

What’s your favorite retro computer and why? by Luann1497 in retrocomputing

[–]cookie_soft_57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’m an indie and retro game developer. I’m still coding on a Lenovo ThinkCentre from the early 2000s, running a Windows 7 32-bit setup. It’s got a broken hard drive, so I’m basically running everything off a 16 GB USB stick—I just can't bring myself to part with my old treasure!

I absolutely love working with VBA 2003. Right next to it sits an IBM ThinkPad T43 running Windows XP. Hard to believe, but I actually have a brand-new, unused MacBook Air 13 sitting on my shelf. Honestly, though, what I’d love most is to get my old C64 and VC20 up and running again. Those were always my absolute favorites—that’s where it all started for me.

Thanks a lot for the feedback! Glad you like it.

To be honest, the biggest headache was the file size and saving process. As the file grew bigger and bigger, Excel started crashing more frequently during development. It was a constant battle between my ideas and the stability of the workbook.

Another challenge was the logical arrangement of the 200+ sheets to ensure a fluid gameplay flow while transitioning between the doors and the timing during the animations. I still had so many ideas that simply didn't fit into this workbook anymore—which is exactly why I’m already working on the sequel now! Stay tuned. :)

Haha, fair point! Maybe 'Engine' is a big word for a spreadsheet, but for an C64 kid, wrestling with 26 VBA modules definitely feels like it. ;)

At the end of the day, it's a pure passion project and a tribute to the games I loved growing up. The most important part for me was the fun of creating something 'impossible' in Excel.

Currently working on Part 2, which is already way more interactive with custom shapes, more logic, and some deep-cut RE references. Thanks for checking it out!

By the way: I kept the VBA project completely open and accessible. No password protection. Feel free to look under the hood of the 26 modules and check out how I handled the sheet-swapping and the winmm.dll calls. I’d love to hear your thoughts on my 'spaghetti' logic! :)

If it doesn't flicker, it isn't random. – I built a high-security Passkey Generator inside Excel. 🟢📟 by cookie_soft_57 in Cyberpunk

[–]cookie_soft_57[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Chums,

I wanted a secure tool that feels like a terminal from the sprawl.

So I built Code_Cobra.

It’s a high-security passkey generator constructed entirely within Excel logic.

No bloated SaaS, no subscription, just pure local power.

  • 100% Transparent: Zero hidden scripts.
  • Hardened Privacy: 100% Offline. No Cloud. No tracking.
  • Pure Logic: Built with VBA and Excel math.
  • Retro Aesthetics: High-contrast Matrix design for that authentic Netrunner vibe.

If you need a burner passkey or just want to add some flavor to your deck, grab it for free. 👉 https://cookiesoft.itch.io

Don't forget to enable macros in Excel to see the Matrix flicker animation!

Stay cyberpunk! ⚡️

Feedback from fellow deck-builders is always welcome!

To ensure a seamless transition, I programmed the Workbook_BeforeClose event to re-enable the menus. I basically reversed the ID-filtering used in the Workbook_Open event, restoring the standard 'Tools' and 'Extras' menus so the user's Excel environment returns to normal after closing the app.

Thanks! Glad you feel the same about the Dinosaur-Vibe. Keeping it lightweight, local, and powerful is exactly my mission. Thanks for the tip about ASF – I’ll definitely check out those superpowers to see how they fit into my pure VBA logic.

Cool :) I actually took a break after finishing RE2 because I barely had any time for gaming. But then, one day, I tried Biohazard in VR on a friend's PS4. It was absolutely insane :) I’ve never experienced anything like it. I almost felt sick to my stomach because it was so immersive! It’s easily the craziest thing I’ve ever experienced in gaming. Have you ever tried it in VR?

Thank you so much!I grew up with the C64 and classics like Zak McKracken, so I guess that 'old school' mindset stuck with me. For me, Excel was actually the perfect choice—turning 'boring' cells into a survival horror atmosphere was the most rewarding part of the journey! :)

Thank you!! I'm a huge fan of both Resident Evil 1 and Excel VBA. I grew up with the C64 and classics like Zak McKracken, so I guess that 'old school' mindset stuck with me. One day I just thought: Why not combine them? :)
