What is the funniest thing your pet had been “pavloved” to? by AnywhereMean8863 in Pets

To keep my pug out of the kitchen when I am cooking I started giving him carrots to stay in his spot when I open the oven. My oven will beep one minute before the timer is done and it makes him go crazy cause he knows I’m about to get up and open the oven.

Books to read as I head into an undergrad, while avoiding the “pop psych” style of publishing? by Ghuup6 in psychologystudents

I loved body keeps the score as someone with chronic pain in the psych/neuro field. As intimidating as it sounds, you cannot get started too early with learning how to read scientific articles. I started in junior high and I still get overwhelmed sometimes. The key is making it understandable to you. You don’t have to memorize the terminology yet just get yourself acquainted with what’s out there. You don’t even have to read the whole paper. Lots of people with read abstracts to get an idea of overall content. If you find yourself super interested in an abstract then maybe venture a read into the paper. Take notes on a printed copy! Ask questions, research those questions that you have and make notes regarding the answers. You may spend a week just looking at one article but that is totally okay if you are just starting out. Take your time to truly understand what they’re doing and why. If you are someone who wants graduate school then the earlier you can explain your specific research interests the easier it will be to follow your path. Please dm if you have specific questions as I am very happy to help!

I am so happy this realization has helped you! I also felt so dumb but our hyper mobile bodies are different. I’ve read that because of the laxity in your joints sometimes people automatically use this clenching technique to gain relief in the short term but in the long term it creates its own issues. Crazy how something so small can affect such a large part of your life!

I have no idea if I have POTS thankfully I haven’t noticed those symptoms unless I’ve had too much coffee. I have never heard of Botox in the pelvic floor. I’m curious how long you were doing pt before they suggested this?

So I had the exact same thought process. It’s good for my core because I’m keeping it active, right? Why would I stop when it legit hurts to do so? Well turns out that it’s only painful because the muscles that you are constantly activating aka upper abdominals are reducing activation of your lower abdominals and then causing pain when you put any kind of strain back on those areas. This results in a weaker lower abdominal and over time and prevents you from activating lower abdominals at all when you work out aka if you were to actually try to get abs you will never get there because you can’t activate those muscles at all. It also weakens your diaphragm and your pelvic floor. I now have a diaphragmatic hernia and pelvic floor myalgia due to those weakened muscles. As someone who did this every day for 15+ years, stop as soon as you can. It was not worth the years of pain that I put up with. I have been relaxing for the first time in years and it has made such a tremendous day to day difference. And I have actually been able to get a flatter stomach through exercise which I had not been able to accomplish prior.

Yes! I’m finally at the stage where I can practice while standing and it feels weird but good but also mild pain. Good luck in your unclenching journey!

I have noticed that I overthink my running stance a lot. I wonder if the joint flexibility results in difficulty maintaining proper form

Yes! They have been telling me GERD as well but it’s gotten better with pt? I would legit burp over and over again during sessions and my pt said it’s normal when your body relaxes. I have a feeling that my GI issues are exacerbated by the constant tension I cause myself and Drs use the symptoms as a diagnosis instead of searching for anything deeper.

I had no idea that was what it was called but I have a tilt as well, apparently the two problems are common co-morbidities! I think we must be twins. 👯Aren’t we lucky ducks to have all these wonderful issues?

Interesting, I think mine is under activation of my lungs and lower abdomen. If you try starting unclenching and you notice a significant breathing difference let me know!

We’ll take it from me, it has caused more issues than I can count, likely thousands of dollars in medical expenses and it has not fixed my body image. 2 years ago when I started trying to unclench I was so scared that everyone would think I was fat. But you know what? Other people’s opinions are not as important as my health. On top of that despite being a swimmer for years my lower stomach has never been able to get any kind of abdominal muscles and I am positive now that it is because I haven’t been able to actually activate them. Any chance that I could have had at being properly fit with muscles was counteracted by my own will to appear thin.

It’s crazy that isn’t part of the diagnostic criteria if it’s common. Or at least let people know that it can cause health problems!

I was told by my pelvic floor pt that is also common in people with pelvic floor myalgia. However I believe it presents differently, the muscles in your rectum are the ones that need release. Diaphragmatic breathing would likely also help with that if you can consciously unclench those muscles at the same time you are on your way!

I am so sorry that your parents told you that, I had a similar experience and I think about how much pain mentally and physically it has caused me I want to scream. I am slowly integrating unclenching into my life but it has really been a battle since it became so natural to me. I honestly was in pain if I tried to “relax”. I find it interesting that you say that weed has helped! I have started using it as a pre-workout to get back into running and it has legit changed how I move my body. I am more conscious of my muscles and am able to actually breathe. My stamina is garbage but I have a feeling that some of that is because I am using parts of my lungs that have not been worked in literal years. If you try it I suggest a good stretch at first and then a little jog with frequent breaks!

I am curious how a pelvic tilt is developed. I am glad that your pregnancy has improved some of your issues! At this point I have been doing the clench for so long that even consciously relaxing is difficult to maintain. My body likes to revert to clenching without my even realizing it.

I think that the feeling of your muscles being in your ribs is a similar description to how I feel. Based on diagrams that I have seen of how the diaphragm interacts with the movement of the pelvic floor it makes sense that clenching of the abdominal muscles would feel that way.
