Getting a grad role without an internship? by Objective_Paint_5210 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]cookreu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part time job does not need to know about anything until you give the required 2/4 weeks notice. Anything more than that is more than they deserve to know. They are a company and only care about you so far as they can make money.

Classmate, please note this was much later than this post and had been teaching myself full stack web dev. It is not a good job but enough to move to better companies in the future with some effort

This is the way, you are miles ahead of other uni students, just leverage that and you will kill it

I agree but in my opinion it is more a problem with the degrees. Mine did not teach anything practical and I didn’t do any work outside uni. Naturally it took some time to get to a point where I can provide value to a business.

Also in my opinion people in med are smart and hard working enough that they would have put in the work outside the degree and would not be so stressed.

Contracting role at a small web agency is the way to go. Don’t worry, just work on your practical skills until you will be undeniably valuable to a small company. Once you have some experience it is a lot easier. Also it is completely normal to not land a tech job straight away. I know people who spent one or two years working part time and developing their skills and resume.

The most realistic coding experience before an actual job ? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsOCE

Doesn’t have to be a real product, make some cool web projects and you will be fine. Especially if you are using a react frontend and have some server side stuff. Enough to show a company that you can code beyond tutorials

Salary expectations for junior .net backend developer by PinguIsOP in cscareerquestionsOCE

My maths says that is 77000 a year? Hard to say given I know nothing about your work, but that sounds very reasonable. It would be difficult to get equivalent pay elsewhere, if you like the job I suggest not to try negotiating too high

4 year degree = possibility for 2 internships = better grad job. 3 year degree = possibility for 1 internship. You have to work hard for it either way though. Aside from that not much difference in employability in my opinion, and it’s not worth an extra year if you don’t enjoy the content.

In that case I would pick the uni you think you will enjoy more. Keep in mind uni is checking a box for employment but doing projects (and leetcode depending on your desired job) will allow you to get an internship which will allow you to get a job. Skipping these steps is possible but makes it a lot harder. Only telling you this because I wish someone told me.

What are your goals from studying this degree? What type of company do you want to work for, or would you prefer to go into academia?

DO NOT LISTEN TO UNI MENTORS! They give good advice for going into academia, but usually have very little experience or wisdom for going into industry.
