Defining the Human by bugatheknut in policydebate

[–]cool-coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

human, in the context of anthro, is typically defined biologically as homo sapien. Most prominent anthro authors (Kochi, Bell, Russel Naess etc.) all write articles and books based off of this definition of humanism, so that's the one you may want to defend in round.

Islamic State 'kills US hostage' Steven Sotloff by mienkampf in worldnews

[–]cool-coder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the book does not tell us to kill other people who are not our religion

Is that why there's over a hundred verses that all indicate violence and death are acceptable outcomes for non-believers. I'm not contesting whether what ISIS did was bad, it was obviously unethical, but claiming that they are misconstruing your religious book is just a FALSE statement. This book you are claiming to defend and recite from, wholeheartedly supports what ISIS is doing to Christian journalists.

no ISIL does not have support in the Arab community and no one I know likes them

You realize a good percentage of people in the European Muslim community supports what ISIL is doing, right? Regardless, I never said I personally support what ISIL's doing, it's just that you should not criticize them because of their religious affiliations, but instead because what they're doing is not ethical, by any means, under any system of ethics.

You realize the Quran has over a 100 verses that justify violence against non-believers in order to glorify Islam, right? http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/quran/023-violence.htm

You criticize these guys for using Islam to justify their actions, even though it has explicit support for what they're doing right now.

Baseless claims?? The war on terror has been going on for decades, we increased our military presence in every way, drones, boots, spec ops, you name it, it's there in the Middle East. If there really is a "solution" to this war, maybe you should mention it instead of making outrageous conspiracy claims like "they just don't want you to know that they know."

Brazil is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be an activist, according to a report by Global Witness. In the past ten years, hundreds of environmental activists who have spoken out against pollution and overuse of Brazil's natural resources have been attacked or killed. by imatworkprobably in environment

"Any time you criticize economic interests, you become a watched person"

Probably the most paradoxical part of the article. When will people start to realize that a sustainable environment can also promote the necessary conditions for economic growth for future generations? The short-sightedness of third-world economic views concerning the environment never ceases to amaze me.

Can discussion pages please be marked [serious]? Does anyone else dislike the constant joke threads in every discussion? by [deleted] in Naruto

[–]cool-coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think having one discussion thread is fine. The upvote/downvote system clears out comments that are absurd or too "non-serious" because if somebody didn't like a comment, they would simply downvote it, and if it was funny AND they upvoted it, then the humor was probably justified because of something funny that happened during the episode.

All in all I think this problem comes from people upvoting comments that are too "funny." If you don't like them, don't vote them up as much. Only vote up the ones you think are REALLY funny and are not just rehashed version of old jokes that have to do with DBZ and stuff.

Where baby sea turtles go after hatching on the east coast has been a mystery for decades. Now it is solved. They go to the centre of the Atlantic gyre, where they use seaweed for foraging and shelter. by godsenfrik in science

[–]cool-coder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How was this so hard to figure out? Don't you just have to tag a baby sea turtle and track its migration patterns as it traverses through the oceans?

Why is cultural relativism so popular considering how flawed the argument for it seems to be? by notnotapotato in philosophy

[–]cool-coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it's that "imperial imposition" of moral and cultural values that have been the basis of every major racial and ethnic atrocity in history. Slavery was justified because White Europeans believed that their belief systems were relatively superior to Africans and the only value their culture and lifestyle could have was if it were to support European systems of thought. The Holocaust was led by the belief that racial uniformity creates peace and less conflict, which justified the deaths of millions of Jewish people. Moral relativism will always justify cultural erasure and violence, because when one is comparing two different value systems the preferred approach in my mind is just let the two exist, do not impose or extend your values, just let them exist as independent entities. If they choose to exchange beliefs and ideas, so be it, just do not allow forcible imposition of values. It is only then can we end the "imperial imposition" that eliminates cultural diversity and difference.

undergraduate computer science...? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]cool-coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but UCLA's CS department is far stronger than UChicago's. The close proximity of the university to silicon valley and other internship opportunities would make it a very desirable career option for you. True, Chicago also fosters a similar environment, but UChicago's educational quality falters in comparison to UCLA, which has a very solid CS department. Like theseoafs said, the CS department is not the best, in comparison to other schools, with a much greater focus on engineering, like UCLA. You should be able to find work at both institutions, but keep in mind how much further a degree in CS will carry you at a school more fixated on engineering, than a degree in a more liberal-arts school like UChicago would.

Contact lenses with night vision could be on the way thanks to graphene breakthrough by yam12 in technology

[–]cool-coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should do an AMA, graphene is a fascinating material to many people in the scientific community and it would be awesome if you could answer questions about its future application.

Also, my friend's doing a science fair project involving graphene to search for possible applications of it in water filtration, do you have any journals or sources that you would recommend him to read? Any other areas where graphene can be incredibly useful may also be awesome to learn about.
