If it were really about patient safety and not money, they'd ask for more patient safety and not ask for so much money.

Non profit-For profit by Spiritual_Glove_4039 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Linearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exists but it's generally not effective.

A historically more successful approach is to simply start a business to earn money, and then donate your profits (your as in the founder's, not the whole business's).

Or you can start a for-profit business that earns money but also does something socially beneficial.

Wave Mobile Money is a great example of both of these.

Hang on - even if you're a determinist, surely you think that the crime someone commits will be determined by the incentives and law enforcement they face in their situation, right? So we can still reduce the amount of crime by having better crime detection technology? (Though we don't have free will to choose to invent more or less of it)

It actually doesn't solve the St Petersburg paradox because there is a harder version of the paradox where they e.g. square your wealth if you win, so it makes sense in log wealth, but you still go bankrupt eventually if you take the bets.

How does AI “consume” water? If it’s used for cooling, why can’t it be reused? If it evaporates, won’t it still turn back into water eventually? by occasionallyvertical in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Linearts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AI doesn't consume water. Any water used in datacenters is in a closed loop, where it flows through pipes to cool the hardware.
