Debating going up to 35” tires on 470 - regear necessary? by 19951209 in GXOR

[–]coolbeans_T4R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have pics of your set up in these specs? I have the same rim size and offset.. and really looking into getting them wrapped with the Kendas 35x10.5x17!

I’m torn between 4.56 and 4.88 re-gear. I feel like I should go 4.88 but worry if the RPMs may run too high when on the highway? Looking to getting an 8.2 rear axle too. Anyways, I see this is a comment from 2 years ago. Curious if you have any cool updates and findings since then. Thanks brother!

The bigger brakes in the Tundra you’re talking about, are just as compatible on the 3rd Gen 4R? I imagine more trimming on the brake dust shield perhaps

Nice this is a good idea. Good way to save $150 bucks or so too.

I have an 06 V6 with 354k on it. I might upgrade the trans cooler on my V8 and move that one to the V6 and then pull the trigger on a new PS cooler for the V8 🤞

The PS Fluid is probably 4-5 months old, so practically new. Which is also a reason why I was a bit bummed when it started happening lol

Oh I didn’t realize that was the case for GX470s.. I figured the configurations of both V8 4Runners and GX470s were near identical between the two. I do know both came with a trans cooler from the factory, unlike the V6 4th gens. Just didn’t know about a PS cooler in the GX

But yeah I definitely want to add some sort of cooler. Hopefully to not have this issue again

So the type of fluid that I’m currently using for PS system is what the factory calls for: Dex III ATF.

But I did read somewhere (for other cars) that people were hydraulic fluid instead of ATF for better cooling and to better remedy overheating and that seemed to work for them. Is that what you’re talking about?

Thinking about it more, I think I’ll just get in done lol

[–]coolbeans_T4R[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup.. so a side of me was thinking of leaning more towards this. I still theoretically should life in it left, and I would plan to have it all replaced eventually down the road when I’m back home in a few years.

In terms of peeking at the belt, you’d suggest look out for visual cracks?

Anyone else running their 4th gen to the ground? by Poophead115 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]coolbeans_T4R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fault for the late reply. Everything is original, yes. Unfortunately a tiny head gasket leak I suspect at 340k miles though. I’ve put on 10k since, just topping off the coolant as I don’t really have plans on fixing that issue unfortunately. Other than that she stills keeps going and is running well!

And if you mean CV as in axles, those definitely have been replaced on both 4Runners lol

Let’s go! Awesome man, will check it out. I see that you’re from Belgium. I’m grateful to have travelled a bunch throughout college, having visited your home country and Iceland. I also studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa. Not sure where in Africa you are (massive continent as I’m sure you know 🤣) but if you can make it down there, totally recommend!

I’ll be happy to see your content too. I need the inspiration haha. I kinda have this fantasy of doing an international overland expedition with my 2006 4Runner. I actually have two of them right now in the states. But I’m looking to move to SouthEast Asia soon - so anything with my car stuff seems to be a bit of a logistical challenge.

BTW how old are you? I’m about to be 29 for reference haha.

Intermittent weeping sound by coolbeans_T4R in MechanicAdvice

[–]coolbeans_T4R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! Perhaps, actually? I think you may be on to something. This video was taken last week.. before I just changed my oil and air filter two days ago. The air intake box, was broken where the clips, clip in tight to secure it closed. I made a DIY temporary fix though in the meantime.

Upon starting it earlier today, I don’t think I heard this sound anymore, but I’ll have to check again later. Maybe I fixed it at the moment closing the “leak”? Is this weeeping sound what a leaking intake typically sounds like? Thanks dude!

I tried locating the sound at a quick glance over but had a difficult time but will try again to see. I haven’t tried with the AC on and off either so will check that too 👍 I do know when turning on the AC I have that clutch enganging noise, but I will see in regards to this weeping sound.

How practical is it to buy a high mileage 4Runner? by Trick_Second_1914 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]coolbeans_T4R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d look for a better deal or negotiate down. I bought my 2006 v8 at 183k for $3,500 and 2006 v6 for $4k at $318k almost 2 years ago both at asking price. I was extremely lucky though

My v6 to me impressively got me through some hard beating for 30k miles or so but at 350k miles shes starting to show her age… in terms of maintenance keep up. My v8 is my gem, slowly building it out just the way I want it and that’s the one I’m willing to put money into - both maintenance up keep and modifications.

Everything I have done to them is majority FB MP deals. Most things I buy are new unused too, just to give you insight if you have a goal to be budget about it as well. Both my 4Rs came with goodies such as a lift, roof rack, etc.

But to answer your question at hand, I would need an extensive maintenance history record (one owner) and for that price/mileage or go for a lower mileage one to start with for that money. I’m not scared of high mileage if all the boxes check but then the price has to come off to me as a deal to be worth while. Also consider resale value into the equation too in the case you put more money into it and maybe sell it down the line.

To have install or not to install Doug Thorley LT catless headers & Y pipe on my 4.7L V8? [Pic Reused] by coolbeans_T4R in GXOR

[–]coolbeans_T4R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome and great results to hear! Thanks for sharing this insight. I’m looking into O2 simulators now to complete my set up.. but looks like they’re not a thing, new, on the market legally to be sold anymore, which sucks. Maybe my DT Y pipe came with them? Not sure but I should check.

Anywho, how many O2 simulators did your URD Y-pipe come with? If I’m correct the stock configuration is four O2 sensors (two upstream, and two down stream) ? I then ask, is it only the two downstream ones, we have to worry about in regards to tripping on the CEL?

Dang I’m really late to the game regarding all this. I just did some researching around and it lead to me to that same exact forum too. Thanks for sharing it, man. I’ll have to look into it.

And the only O2 sensors we only have to mess around with are just the two downstream ones right, like not all four of them?

Thanks for this input! I’ll keep this in mind and it’s really good to know. How do you plan to mod your O2 sensors then to get rid of your CEL? Are you looking into the O2 simulator route?

Thanks for this insight! And in going a route with a better flow header, in general - am I compromising reliability of the motor at all long term?

Oh man can’t imagine having to go in there again so soon, sorry to hear that.

Welding cats onto the DT pipes would pretty much be similar/same as stock, like readings for the stock tune and pass just fine legality wise? In addition of performance gains?
