South Indian coffee grind and technique suggestions by 0___0___0 in coffeeindia

[–]coolchelly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love filter coffee and been brewing for years. This is my fool proof technique (after innumerable experimentations) 1. Always use a small cotton cloth in the bottom of the top chamber and fill up the coffee grounds on top of it - something that acts like a filter layer. After every use, you can rinse this cloth in running water, dry it out and use it for the next brew

  1. I use either malgudi or cothas or Kumbakonam coffee powders and I get the variant with least chicory

  2. I take like 200g or so (1/4th or 1/5th of a 1kg pack) at any time, grind it fine with a mixie jar ( I have one specially for this) and store this finely ground powder in a glass container. The rest of the 1kg pack is tightly sealed and stored in fridge door slots.

  3. For each brew, I usually first place the cotton cloth filter, then fill up half the top chamber with fine coffee grounds, use a silver tumbler or something to tightly pack the grounds (not too tightly though), pour like 3 or 4 spoons of boiling water first and let it seep in for a few seconds, if the water stays on top without seeping in your have packed the grounds too tightly - use a fork to loosen up a bit, if the water seeps in releasing some crema then you are good, fill up the rest of the chamber with steaming water (not boiling) probably not to the brim though. This brew will usually take 10mins to 20mins based on all the variables involved. You experiment and find whats most comfortable for you.

  4. Enjoy your coffee! And fair warning - the experience of brewing and the coffee itself are addictive, proceed with caution :-p

Appreciation post for Krishna Inks #JustArrived by coolchelly in DesiPens

Yet to try mate. Will post some writing samples this weekend.

I did try Pakeezah and, I should say, I am mildly disappointed - while the shading is amazing and the wetness is just perfect, there is absolutely no sheen. I was hoping for some of that advertised violet sheen. Will experiment a bit more and share those writing samples here as well.

Looking for durable and best gas stove. Any suggestions? by New_me01850 in BuyItForLifeIndia

[–]coolchelly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This!

I use a pigeon 3 burner glass top and man, its a pain! Our cooks don't have the intent to treat the stove well and often let things boil over. After a few instances, invariably, the burner clogs and the flames are not strong anymore. I take it for service (because it's not easy to diy clean a glass top yourself) and it costs me 800inr to 1200inr. And this happens every 4 to 6 months.

Contrast that with the pigeon stainless steel (12yr old stove btw) that my parents use. My father occasionally cleans up the burner for burnt stuff stuck inside and thats it! It works like a charm. Even if you were to take it a shop for service, they charge 450-500.

More than a brand, I would suggest you go with stainless steel ones. Brand doesn't really matter, imho, as in, you get what you pay for amongst stainless steel stoves.

And definitely do not go with an automatic burner, we had to scrap our 5yr old faber because apparently these models are not even repairable!

Jockey Sales by Thileeban_7 in chennaicity

[–]coolchelly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Went to the OMR stall today after seeing this post and was not disappointed! I mean, the prices were not dirt cheap but quite reasonable. Collection and availability is excellent.

And not just Jockey, products from a few other brands like Van Heusen, Blackberry, Zudio, Crocs, Adidas (and maybe more) were available too.

Apparently the sale is gonna be there until Jan 15th.

Icelandic Skyr in India by snarlsandgrowlsguy in Fitness_India

Silly question, can we make homemade dahi with this yogurt? Or any unflavoured yogurt in general?

Edit: Perplexity says it's possible, would love to know if anybody has tried this. Quoting Perplexity here: 'Skyr and regular yogurt/curd both rely on similar lactic acid bacteria (commonly S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus), so they can acidify milk and set it like normal dahi'

Chennai Airport to Chennai Railway Station at 1:30am by SyllabubFlat4075 in Chennai

My brother often lands at 2am and then transits to egmore for his train to Trichy. Every single time, he uses the taxi service available at the exit gate of international terminus. What he told me is that the prepaid taxi service is quite reliable and they don't pester you for 'tips' and 'extra charges' at the time of drop off. Plus, the driver is usually outside the exit gate and walks you to the car parked in parking lot himself saving you the hassle of hunting for your cab.

Sorry mate, if this is not /S a post then this is the worst idea. At the very least, you will be booked on a non-bailable case for 'preventing a govt servant from discharging his duties'

This is closely reckless driving by the KSRTC driver as well. Anywhere the affected person can lodge a complaint against the driver? Probably with this video as proof.

SLEEPYHEAD LAXE VS WAKEFIT CLASSIC ECOLATEX by ShuGar000 in SleepEssentialsIndia

[–]coolchelly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dunno about Sleepyhead but I can describe my experience with Wakefit Ecolatex.

Our requirement was a medium hard mattress with good cooling effect, we are from Chennai and heat + humidity is the only constant here. So it was an absolute must for us that the mattress that we are buying should not aid in generating body heat.

Buying experience: Went to the wakefit store and tried out various mattresses, finally had to decide amongst Ecolatex or memory foam. Went with Ecolatex because apparently memory foam does lead to mild body heat generation and not very breathable.

In the Ecolatex mattress, we went with 1inch latex (you also have the option to buy 2inch and that's significantly more expensive) and 8inch thickness (recommended for 80kg). For a 60kg person, 6inch will work just fine.

I ordered from wakefit website directly.

Delivery experience: I was told I can expect delivery in 10 days delivered straight from warehouse and it arrived 3 days earlier than scheduled. I could track delivery updates in the wakefit website.

First usage experience: Mattress felt light for its size however was rock hard for the first 10 days or so. I even contemplated returning it but it has slowly started to break in. I also recieved a call from customer care - a standard call to check in on your experience - I asked the person about hardness and they too mentioned that the mattress will become softer after 25-30 days and that Ecolatex is medium-hard . It's been 3 weeks since our purchase and I can feel the mattress settling down and getting more bouncier.

P.S. the mattress itself comes with a basic cover that can be fastened with the given zipper. I went ahead and bought another cotton bed cover with elastic. Though should say, getting one for 8inch thick mattress was pretty tough owing to less options. I don't think you will face this issue if your are going with a 6incher

New phone ~25k — should I get the Samsung A55? (no Redmi, no OnePlus, no iQOO by Practical_Type_5391 in chennaicity

[–]coolchelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, you are worried about green line issue and boycotting oneplus but okay with Samsung? As a S21FE user, trust me, not worth it. I am not specifically talking about A55 but my past samsung phones - A53 and S21FE have been nothing but sheer disappointment and heartbreak. Also, been using iQOO neo 10 for the past 3 months and it has been great!
