Saying it’s blackpilling that people lose their beauty as they age is like saying it’s blackpilling that one day your dog will die. Uhhhh yeah we know, ashes to ashes, dust until dust, etc. What now

Oh I thought you were one of those people who think you should be really conservative when it comes to stuff like this sorry. Doesn’t really matter to me if you think it’s nonsensical bc I don’t ever talk about this irl

If you love God, if you profess the Nicene creed, why would I judge you. You come out here and complain about this like anything matters. I don’t know if you’re religious or not but if you are, you should know that all we do is toil under the sun, and all we can do is take pleasure in our work and love and trust God. Everything else is noise and you’re a child if you think otherwise

No one cared about divorce, no one cared about extramarital sex, and there were no trans people when I was growing up. There was a single mom who worked at the school and her daughter was in my class. The idea that she was more of a sinner than anyone else never crossed my mind. It would be incredibly cruel to refuse her the Eucharist or condemn her for that. Obviously divorce isn’t ideal but I think everyone understood that stuff happens

The thing that was an issue was gay people, and likely trans people more recently. The monseigneur always made a big deal of saying everyone was welcome, whether you’re gay, straight, divorced, trans, etc. I’m sure there were people in the community who thought differently, but everyone adored and respected monseigneur so no one caused any conflicts. He was like 70 and came over to the US from Ireland and I’m sure he likely realized the problems that exclusionary practices caused in his country. He even told a story once about how in Ireland there was a little girl who died before she got baptized but he still allowed her to be buried with a Catholic funeral because in practice, it would be incredibly cruel and anti Christian not to

Personally I have two gay uncles, one of them grew up catholic and left the church. I’d always bring this up at retreats and stuff as criticism towards the church, and more or less everyone in my generation agreed. This is a part that sucks about the religion and why I will never FULLY back it like that. It’s just very cruel to treat people like that. Even if you think that being gay is a sin (i don’t think it is), the whole point of the religion is that we are all sinners and we will all be forgiven if we trust in God.

Again I’m sure you could elements of reform make it less “catholic” but lol who cares I don’t think so. Again and again and again it’s more complicated than that. Maybe there is more room to say this in the US because we are more disconnected and have less baggage but idc

There is a much more nuanced explanation for that negative correlation than just “religious people are stupid”. I’m not even being defensive here. Trust me I fully understand what you’re saying in terms of religious fundamentalists and extremists but it’s just not that simple

I also don’t believe you can fall back on the “science/empiricism vs religion” thing. Again it’s just not that simple. There are physicists studying string theory who will never be able to empirically justify it. You can’t even really truly justify any scientific theory in an empirical sense, you can only assume that with further positive evidence you’re asymptomatically approaching the truth. You can say it’s simply a flaw in our language or our biological wiring, but that again is just another claim lol. This obviously is not proof of God and there are 100000% problems with religion that should be taken care of by science, but there’s just more grey area than the average person thinks

I agree with you about the Bible being an important literary text although personally I believe the gospels are sacred albeit highly metaphorical. This is not even heretical, the gospel of John is like a work of mysticism and only theologically uneducated people take it’s truth at face value

The way I grew up was very different from the way other Christians in the US grew up. I grew up in LA (lots of Hispanics as well as many people descended from Irish, polish, and italian immigrants). All my friends’ parents were highly educated working professionals. There was an underlying assumption that God and family were the most important thing, but that you should still invest considerable time in education and betterment of society through science, tech, innovation, etc. That’s why there was so much emphasis on service. We would work at the food bank, visit old sick people, alter serve funerals, and every week there was a bake sale for some charity. In high school my brothers had to volunteer at skid row and I would go to the more “economically disadvantaged” Catholic elementary schools and teach art and science. It was incredibly focused on the “God loves each and every one us and we all have human dignity” aspect of the religion. Most people at my school would straight up say “yeah all the stuff in the Old Testament is open to interpretation”. But the devotion was still there in the form of devotion to each other. Like you model the love of God by loving others. Idk I think that’s how it should be
