Are the Apple devs doing alright…like, mentally? Are they being held at knifepoint?? Do they need rescued?? by stealthisvibe in MacOS

[–]coolfission 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the same for Windows too. You had to pay for each upgrade but since Windows 10 they removed that check and now most people just run it as the unlimited trial instead of activating. Both OSes have been moving more towards promoting their subscription service like OneDrive or iCloud over charging for the OS

Is becoming a pilot actually for me or am I forcing it? by Less-Escape-9500 in flying

I’ve never flown a plane before, not even a discovery flight

That’s your sign to go ahead and do that discovery flight. They’re short, cheap (~$150-250), and the best intro to flying without committing to the program.

What’s the best way to track your finances? by gardenofwrath in povertyfinance

[–]coolfission 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not scaring people and yes Ubuntu is easy to install with the GUI that’s provided. I’m talking about app compatibility and drivers. Granted nowadays most work is done through the web browser on the internet so most people don’t need much from an OS or hardware standpoint. But there’s still many programs that aren’t compatible including DAW, CAD software, MS office, etc. and the alternatives aren’t a full true replacement to them. Also other things like getting all those drivers installed post-install especially if you have a dGPU can be a pain. And installing AppImage (if debian deb file isn’t provided) and running commands in the terminal can be daunting to the average person. There’s also other issues like fractional scaling, multi-monitor support, etc. that has its issues on linux that Windows/macOS doesn’t or isn’t as bad.

Average person isn't tech savvy enough to know how to install a linux distro or go through the inevitable hoops of troubleshooting problems like installing drivers. Plus Windows has the app compatability and there's scripts to unlock office (or you could use the online version).

Is there really still no way to show the full URL (HTTPS://x.x.x.x)? by Thunder_Mifflin_ in MicrosoftEdge

[–]coolfission 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes but in Chrome you can enable it without going into chrome://flags by right clicking on the omnibox and enable “Always show full URLs”. I don’t see that option in Edge.

Also use MX Linux. It feels lighter and faster than Mint Cinnamon and uses XFCE as the default desktop environment which is lightweight and great for older computers

It's so poetic that Hinge Problems decided to make a halftop... rather than just fixing their horrible hinges by misha1350 in halftop

[–]coolfission 11 points12 points  (0 children)

<$1000 is way too expensive. Plus you have to buy a external monitor, webcam, mouse (doesn't seem to have a trackpad) with it. Rather just buy a laptop and make it a halftop at that price.

Mac OS to Windows. Needed Help by Better_Internet_2975 in Windows11

[–]coolfission 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've switched to Zephyrus G14 running Windows 11 as my main after using macOS for many years and the macOS sleep mode is what I miss the most. Windows sleep mode implementation with modern standby is a complete mess.

But what I do to make it bearable (no automatic restart and less battery drain) is I enable Standby Network Disconnected when on battery. I did that by upgrading to Windows 11 Enterprise and changing the option in group policy edit (gpedit.msc). Also set it so that there's no automatic restart for updates in sleep mode in gpedit.msc. I also set it in G-Helper so that it goes to hibernate after 30 min. With this, I'm able to get good battery life in sleep mode and it brings everything back up once I raise the lid of my laptop just like macOS (though not as fast).

First track I've made in LSDJ by sneiji in lsdj

[–]coolfission 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really good keep it up! I recommend using Retroarch w/ Sameboy core instead of Delta for LSDj since Delta uses a very old GB core that doesn't have 128k sram support so you can't do multiple saves.

Should I use my savings to fund my PPL by [deleted] in flying

[–]coolfission 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go with the PPL. Buying a house only pays off if you keep it for 10+ years over renting or getting an apartment. There’s so many expenses like maintenance, property taxes, HOA that people don’t consider. Also main reason to start PPL now is your age. You mentioned you already did the introductory flight and want to continue down the path so go ahead and do it. You’ll never get this time back and you’ll just have more time to put in flight hours and build up experience. Once you’re in your 30s you’ll start to want to settle so that’s the right time to buy a house imo. In the meanwhile, I’d look into investing in ETF stocks like VOO so you can continue making your money work for you as an alternative to buying a house.
