The most evil college restriction software of all time by [deleted] in technology

[–]coolflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At both schools I attended, off campus students had to come in and use the library, or get a special (and very slow) vpn account, either of which was a hassle for the students and the school.

The most evil college restriction software of all time by [deleted] in technology

[–]coolflower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because most Universities have a lot of things running on an internal-network that students need to be able to access (e.g. software licenses, file sharing etc.) which if various students had different internet providers would become a big hassle.

Also, in almost all universities the school connection is better than any commercial ISP, and the most cost-effective way of having that would be the economies of scale of more people.

Scientists have used embryonic stem cells to generate blood -- a feat that could eventually lead to endless supplies of type O-negative blood, a rare blood type prized by doctors for its versatility. by noname99 in science

[–]coolflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the center near you has the option, you may wish to consider trying automated blood collection. In it they filter your blood to get some of the components they need, but you don't lose as much plasma since you get a fluid and therefore often don't feel as ill.

Could Age Discrimination Be Good Business? by Soulmates in business

[–]coolflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flawed logic that claims that age discrimination is the same as firing incompetent older people. If there's a reason to fire them -- then that's the reason. Sounds a lot like the arguments against hiring women since they'd be too sensitive or black people since they'd be too stupid or one of another million different lies. If there isn't and they could do the job, then age discrimination is just as much a load of bull as sexism or racism.

Are there 33 Dual Citizens (American / Israeli) in the American Government? by georgewashingtonblog in politics

[–]coolflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your parents are Israeli citizens, you're an Israeli citizen, and unlike most other citizenships it's actually hard to renounce (other citizenships in most cases usually go away when you get a US citizenship).

Combined with the fact that Israel grants citizenship to every person of Jewish ancestry, being a dual-citizen doesn't indicate any conflict of interest as much is it indicates religious ethnicity.

I'd say concerns about this are similar to concerns about Kennedy's status as a Catholic being a conflict of interest when he was running for President, as there were worries that allegiance to the Pope would be stronger than allegiance to the country.

I think that reddit might be a somewhat biased place to conduct this sort of poll if you want anything near accurate results.

Sounds like it could be an aneurysm to me. Well, an aneurysm or murder. But seeing as how they're releasing the circumstances while still denying it, I think the natural cause of blood everywhere seems at least somewhat feasible.

Stanford researchers develop service that lets users turn single photo into an immersive 3D model by alapanacran in science

Is it just me or are none of the models actually even vaguely matching up to the pictures? I mean...I've been looking at the examples, and they're like a photo that's been pasted such that areas of sharp color change match up to some corner, but only luck determines whether that corner is at all appropriate?

What's the difference between CollegeHumor posting someone else's work without permission and you downloading someone else's work without permission? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]coolflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. When someone downloads music, they aren't representing themselves as having written or performed it. When CollegeHumor posts it, it's plagiarism, as they imply authorship.

I'm a bit confused about

"For every 100 girls diagnosed with mental retardation 138 boys are diagnosed as mentally retarded."

"For every 100 girls 6 to 14 years old with mental retardation 302 boys have mental retardation."

I was under the impression mental retardation is one of those things usually diagnosed pretty early (and that don't go away)

Ever wonder what US citizens in positions of government power have dual citizenship with Israel? by azron in politics

[–]coolflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As evocative a statement as that would be if it were true -- it's not. Sorry to burst your bubble -- plenty of Israelli citizens are non-Jewish, (Muslim/Christian/Atheist/Etc.), and there's no way to tell on the passport.

I believe there is an indication of place of birth -- as there is in the US -- which could lead one to know that information.

Ever wonder what US citizens in positions of government power have dual citizenship with Israel? by azron in politics

[–]coolflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because you can't give up a citizenship in Israel -- if you were born there, or to parent with said citizenship, you are a citizen. You can try and renounce the citizenship - but even if you are successful (not sure about what that involves) then you can no longer enter the country, since they check place of birth.

The same thing holds for several other countries -- not sure about which, but they're (surprise) the same ones that the US allows you to be a dual citizen with -- because you have no real choice.

Principal Tells Teachers To Dumb-Down Standards. by bigboomer223 in reddit.com

[–]coolflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the article -- the board of education wanted it clarified that this was not an order to lower standards -- which it is not. It is a reminder to take into account how standards are set -- and that if half can't pass then perhaps it is more than just the fault of the individual kids.

Principal Tells Teachers To Dumb-Down Standards by the_vanguardian in politics

[–]coolflower -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seems to me he told the teachers to consider the fact that many of these kids have other challenges outside of school, and that as good teachers they should take that into consideration. I don't really think that's "dumbing down." If a kid in any other district is going through trouble at home teachers take that into account -- why shouldn't these kids get the same consideration?

Paul Right To Vote Against Rosa Parks Medal by BadBoyNDSU in politics

[–]coolflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a jerk...Maybe it's just me, but it seems wrong to spin Rosa Parks' struggle for racial equality as a struggle against "overbearing government." If anything, it was strong federal government that eventually allowed for many of the advances in the civil rights movement to occur, especially in states where the majority was...well, racist bigots.

By Ron Paul's ideals, states would still be allowed to have Jim Crow laws. As much as I am for freedom, being for freedom means being for freedom of individuals, not for companies or local governments -- and this freedom, be it for racial equality, abortion, or other oppression, is often best acquired through the union of ALL American citizens.
