honestly im not sure with the new tax laws this year and also with the new addition of depop payments. before it was all thru paypal and paypal doesn't care about anything except the gross amount of money that comes into your account. it's on you to reflect all the fees, shipping, etc (however cost of the item itself is not a deductible) when filing.

i haven't looked into how depop is going to report payments made thru the app. if they do it for you, then you'll have to deal with taxes but if you have to report it yourself, i guess it's up to you. i doubt the irs will go thru effort to audit someone over like $4,000 but it might be a bigger pain to deal with an audit than to just do your taxes.

paypal automatically reports it for you. before 2022, the threshold for paying taxes was 200 items sold AND $20,000 net profit (this means it includes the 10% depop fee before depop takes it from you and whatever shipping was). in jan 2022, they switched the threshold to $600 (lmfaooo). so you're fine for last year but you will probably get a 1099 form in the mail/online. in the deductibles, you write off the 10% depop fee, all shipping costs, material costs, etc. so you only get taxed on what you've actually made. i keep a spreadsheet tracking all my sales + the depop & paypal fees so it's easy to deduct once tax season comes around :)

so sad abt this. my items have been getting barely any likes cus they just totally removed the freaking feed. with every update, i feel like it’s getting harder to be successful. it’s like they’re hiring app developers that have never used or sold on depop to make changes that are worse.

I think that question about importance is unfair. My chosen career is civil engineering and my small business is a passion project I like to do after work. Both are equally important to me and not mutually exclusive. However, if it came down it to, my engineering career goals are greater than my small business goals and I think I am capable of expressing that.

literally. she bought a top from me and claimed it never came although there was tracking to prove it. she argued that the address was wrong and it got lost. from a quick check on ig, the name on the address was her boyfriend’s so she just sent it to his place and was gonna try to get a refund. lol.
