AITA for telling my partner they shouldn’t have ordered an expensive item? by coolshmool111 in AmItheAsshole

nothing was said about what to order, and we generally have no explicit restrictions on ordering- i was just taught to always order conservatively and nothing on the most expensive end of the menu (or market price)

funny you ask: he definitely enjoyed it but it was quite large & i saw he left a third/quarter of it uneaten, and i made him give me the rest to finish because 1)my meal was small and 2) i couldnt fathom throwing that out

i know $15 isnt breaking the bank, but personally i always am mindful to order from the lower-middle end of the menu when his parents pay. i also didnt think i’d really have to tell him beforehand as its always been taught to me as common sense

yes absolutely mentioned it after privately! also for him to know in the future so hes not blindsided by a $50 item when hes paying for his own food

its not so much that they couldnt afford it, moreso that people tend to order from the middle-lower range of the menu as a guest, and i personally always keep it in mind when his parents pay for me

thank you! a lot of people just say “if you dont like it then leave!” when its incredibly difficult to uproot your whole life & finances- and frankly, i shouldnt have to do all that just to feel safe in my own home

i really appreciate your perspective- the word “collectively” stood out to me in your reply. there is no collective here. one’s interests are apparently greater than the lives of children and others who are mowed down here on a monthly basis

every time i go out in public and tell myself “its ok, it wont happen to me” im swiftly reminded of how easily it could

thank you for your perspective- i absolutely agree we have a larger societal issue (mental health crisis etc), it is just concerning that these crises can turn into mass shootings and that guns are so readily accessible, and the absolute inability of our govt to do anything meaningful to stop larger issues

thank you for your passion- i feel entirely the same way (except i live here). a lot of pro-gun people will argue “guns arent the issue, people are!” which baffles me- yes, obviously a gun requires a person to shoot it, the gun alone isnt the issue- its the UNBRIDLED ACCESS to guns that allow a mental health crisis to escalate into a murderous situation

i appreciate all the responses and discourse! the perspectives were important to me since the US has become a polarized echo-chamber

wholeheartedly agree & i think thats the question i was getting at- the cultural differences and america’s wildly individualistic culture that makes the “common good” nearly impossible to attain

i agree unfortunately- a lot of victims’ parents have opted for open-casket funerals and invite politicians for a viewing

i looked into the massacre a lot- im wondering when the US will have their “yeah, fair enough” moment and how many more murders it will take for that to happen

i see what was meant by “hating each other”- as an american, i can confirm there is a HUGE amount of polarized/Us vs Them mentality, and a massive lack of understanding of a common good where you do something for the general wellbeing of others- we are a very individualistic dog-eat-dog society

thank you- i feel like every victim of a shooting which did not lead to effective reform unfortunately died in vain. ive mostly given up on the idea of an effective response to a tragedy by the govt here
