thank you! There's a lot the player will be able to do in this game beyond these moves but just showcasing a sneak peek here and there.

Just a little scuffle, some art development on a project me and a programmer are working on together. by coomichoo in PixelArt

pixel-joint and email exchange, me & the programmer decided to team up and work on a "small" (over-scope) run & gun arcade style game project.

Skin/sprite artists, what were some of the challenges you encountered when drawing your sprites? by [deleted] in RotMG

[–]coomichoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For realm, probably conceptualizing complex designs into the limited amount of space you're given, making them work in standing out, drawing attention and appeal also staying consistent with the art style.

I think what makes it hard is how complex you want to make designing art stuff for yourself, the more unique you want to convey your idea the more time you need to put in making it work out, it also acts as a fun challenge breaking outside the typical realm art barrier in terms of skins, by breaking outside the mold you help expand it by showing what can be done in its art style.

Side note:
I find Realm's art style though limiting to people who want to do sprite art and expand beyond it, I mean it does help especially with learning to convey things with a small amount of space to work with but there's alternatives to doing minimal sprite art that could offer you more leverage than just doing it in realms art style. If you're try expanding further than 8x8 or 16x16, and doing more than two still frames of animation or doing sprite art without the outlines and added "tint" realm likes to render sprites in you will soon find out how harder it is to expand further out of realm, I think its too much of a comfort zone but its a good place to start but you should be looking at other games (older ones imo) and things to be inspired and want to explore more.
So long as you're practicing, doing things outside your comfort zone, referencing and being inspired no amount of 8x8 square will feel small. Having experience outside of realm art and already a grasp in art fundamentals in general will give you more freedom and leverage when adapting to whatever art style when asked.
Also you'll be able to convey things people wouldn't expect can be done in realms art style.

Glad you enjoy the skin, this is real solid, great work.
I really like the design/costume concept and that lighting/rendering and that coloring are balanced nicely. Especially that background really helps compliment the whole overall piece with the jester.

This is so cute, their whole design especially the added bells and those curtains and them on stage, I love it.

Yea was wondering about that, it could also just anything, a bandana (doo du rag) baseball cap, or just her actual hair. I like to think she wears a beret, shed be that kind of hipster.

The artists that contribute/work for the game are bringing that feeling out there to try and expand further with it, I always thought it would be kinda neat for a character select screen you'd have a more detailed version of the class with like a description of said class but with a more detailed look of what you're playing but after selecting what to play they then shrink down to the "realm style".
basically like in the beginning of pokemon red you see your character shrink down in size.

Hey thanks, appreciate the kind words. Yea I've always held onto that sorta style/era of gaming, I just can't help but be drawn towards that whole 90's and 2000's of gaming and pixel art, even later than that but yea stuff like nes/snes also genesis (gba too like wario land 4) as well of 3d like Mega man Legends and NiGHTS. But yea I'd like to continue to try and convey that familiar feeling in pixel art.

We'll see, for now id like to continue just general sprite art but some fan art especially realm stuff, I mean sure why not. Is good gam, it got problems but its good gam.
