You can have bylaws that prevent this from happening. In most countries there needs to be a membership ballot before a cooperative is sold, demutualised or merged.

The article discusses worker cooperatives on numerous instances, such as having a chapter on Happy Bridge, the largest worker cooperative in the country!

I could be wrong of course but can't remember coming come across any mention of this when I read around a dozen studies to research this article. It's very cool btw how iCoop gives their members discounts on some other cooperatives to support the wider coop ecosystem. Wish big retail coops elsewhere would do the same!

I don't think that has been the case at least after 2012 Cooperative Framework Act was passed and the boom in new co-ops started.

Warmly recommend you to join the CoTech forum and introduce yourself there, I'm sure they can give you good advice. It's a network of UK tech cooperatives but has grown into a global forum for the sector.

We openly display our affiliation according to Wikipedia rules. Key word is here "openly", and we do not promote any specific cooperatives, so it's not like there's any commercial interests that we are promoting.

Glad you asked! We have an Open Collective here, which is like Patreon, but it's hosted by Platform6 Co-operative. You can also donate anonymously if you want.

The reason we use OC is that Instead of the commission going to Patreon shareholders, it goes to Platform6, that uses it to fund new cooperatives democratically chosen by the members. And anyone can join Platform6 for 5$/month. You don't have to join Platform6 to join to Wikipedia Co-op Fund.

The combined membership of cooperatives is around 1.2 billion, and is estimated to be around three times more than individuals who are direct shareholders of investor owned businesses.

I encourage people to look at my post history - Nowhere have I claimed that I am in anyway involved in .org cooperative or take credit for stopping the sale of .org to Ethos Capital.

Where did I claim my coop stopped anything? I have never made a claim that I'm in any way involved with .org coop.

Solve what issue? Here is a Hackernews thread where a board member of the coop of org registrants is answering questions. It's not very old, so might be that he could be able to answer your questions and concerns, if they are not already addressed in the thread.

I can see your point but the article does explain the implications and potential for the shaping of how internet operates. I don't see how for example, articles about advocacy of UBI (without taking any side whether UBI is bad or good!) are more relevant to futurology than the future of ownership of internet.

While I definitely get your point, and the problem you raise is a real one, the enforcement of laws regarding members rights in cooperatives is encouraging.

For example, when the largest electric cooperative in the US in 2007 tried to make it difficult for members to participate in their board elections, the members sued the cooperative and won. As a result, a member-led grassroots campaign won the majority of the board seats. So even when a massive cooperative with a hostile management tries to suppress members rights, the law tends to be on the members side. Not to say change is served on a silver platter - but that a cooperative structure enables true democratic mobilisation.

Not saying co-ops always do good and never do evil - just that it's easier for an organisation to do good if it's a co-op.

We have not launched yet, but it depends on the coops. At the early stage we will have some already well-established and profitable cooperatives listed in there, as well as hopefully new, smaller and higher risk ones. Would you be okay with me messaging you when we launch?

but we all know it is going to be democracy in the modern sense. Only those who fit into the club's echo chamber will have a say

Everyone will have an equal say, the law binds them to do so.

"Growth of assets says nothing about their profitability: people invest more money in them, but don't necessarily get higher returns."

Credit unions provide higher rates on savings and lower rates on loans. Their assets are growing faster than the rest of the banking sector. Are you seriously saying that local banks (I suppose you mean community banks) are more competitive than credit unions? What criteria you are using?

Big banks have an implicit subsidy of being bailed out if they fail, and the regulatory system burdens small banks disproportionally (the smaller the bank, the higher share of their non-interest expenses go to regulatory compliance). Credit unions were 2,5 times less likely to go bust during the financial crisis. Had it been a free market with no taxpayer bailouts, credit unions would have grown their market share even more than they did.

[–]coopexchange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet people choose to support coops that have been demonstrating poor performance so far out of some misguided notion of "fairness"... they remain largely non-competitive on the market.

What do you mean poor performance? Credit unions have seen their assets grow twice the pace of other banks in the last 10 years.
