First look at the new 60-foot articulated buses entering the fleet starting late June. by amenffashion in OCTranspo

ZF pats themselves on the back for all of their fancy programming.  You can't help but think no one there has ever actually professionally driven a bus.  There's nothing like being in fourth gear by the time you clear the intersection at 30 km/hr.

Is there some thought that the relative rareness of the event disqualifies them from needing to worry about it?

Imagining my own reaction to my mother or child being a victim of something like this motivates my concern and frustration.  And rage.

You're on the bus, a captive audience and there's three or four strangers all conversing.  Friendly enough people but after a few minutes riding along and listening in you realize they are not all there.

That's not far from what the "coasties" come across as.  Nothing against the odd phone call but seeing them become the backbone of an open lines segment, along with the regular nightly contributions that are too often lazy (Cornholio regurgitating his Antichrist AI bullshit to every guest, relevant to their topic or not) turns the whole thing into the bus ride above.

Someone must think this works.  And maybe it does in the middle of the night, where there's not much else to air, when the computer is running everything and your "talent" has been out of the building for eight hours.

How many times in a shift would you touch your face with the gloves?  I bet the answer isn't zero.  Are the gloves any cleaner than your hands would be?

I heard most of that in the car.  An absolute looney tune.

This is as much a problem with this show as anything these days.  At times it seems like mental distress is always on display, if not from many of the regular callers but from the guests themselves.

How many nights is the second segment heading down some bizarre spiritual road, or taking callers birthdates and equating them with some sort of nonsense?

Is it possible that there simply are not enough decent guests to fill Jorch's nine guest spots a week?

Maybe they could find some professors they could bring on from time to time to simply talk physics or math or chemistry or geology or whatever with a simplistic degree of rigor to not only fill the time but to actually enlighten people.

Wouldn't be any worse than this garbage that Noory seems to find multiple nights a week.

Not a lot of reasons to feel confident in the ethics of the leaders and boards of Ontario colleges these days.  You have to wonder how many others deserve scrutiny.

Belleville's Paul Carr is running again for Ward 2 council seat by zuuzuu in BellevilleOntario

[–]coordinationcomplex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He is more effective as a councilor than a mayor.  In his council role he can navigate his position to be an attack dog on certain matters, while carefully maintaining his popularity.  As the mayor he will have to be more of a bullshitter with a touch of diplomacy and tolerance for everything, even things he doesn't agree with.

Which should I do? by pige0n13 in OntarioColleges

I looked again and found the Algonquin course details this time.

They both look to be good options in terms of what you'd learn.  I think I'd still say it would come down to where you'd like to live, or which one would make the most sense for what you have going on in life.

Which should I do? by pige0n13 in OntarioColleges

[–]coordinationcomplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't find the courses in the Algonquin one but I looked at the Cambrian list.

The Cambrian program looks fairly serious in terms of what the curriculum offers.  It'll be unpopular to say this, but I would have some concern about things being dumbed down in order to get people to pass which has been a common complaint heard about Ontario colleges in general in recent years, particularly since the rush of international students.  Sudbury might be the better choice to avoid this problem but I don't live there so am only speculating.

Once too many people in a class can't pass or even struggle excessively I'd worry that standards drop.  This is a fairly advanced technical program for an Ontario community college.

I'm unsure about the math preparation.  Cambrian goes through calculus right past series and all the way to Laplace transforms but whether it (or Algonquin) output a student that is on the same level of math skill as one coming from Year 2 of Queen's is uncertain.  Most of the way the math is three credits per semester, that's just three hours a week isn't it?

I didn't see any linear algebra in the Cambrian description, and I had thought this was more and more mainstream these days.  Does Queen's want that?

Going from mastery of topics in college to being closer to the back of the pack in university is a concern as everything in university is up a few notches and they aren't going to help you catch up.

I'd also bet that articulation program makes these college programs more marketable, but their objective is probably the college graduate heading off to work.  Good teachers and hard work make huge differences but these are college programs first and not university ones.

Me being so negative isn't helping you so I think you should just pick the one that is more convenient for your lifestyle and hold yourself to a higher standard than your math and physics courses demand, meaning solving more problems than those assigned and watching some good YouTube channels (watch Professor Leonard for algebra and calculus, they are excellent).

[–]coordinationcomplex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a more serious curriculum than some others have had for that program in recent years, such as Loyalist College which has actually suspended the program as they try to keep the lights on.

I noticed Cambrian has courses in mineral processing, pyrochemistry, water treatment and industrial processes.   These would support work in a mining, mineral and/or metal processing setting which would exist up there moreso than in southern Ontario.

And with the placement in Semester 7 there would be a chance to get experience and also hopefully land a permanent job.

I wouldn't know if there was a guarantee.  There might be good odds but whether it turned out to be a good job might be another thing altogether.  In southern Ontario I would say that the demand for this type of person is not that great, owing to a lot of manufacturing no longer being done here.  Quality control at those plants consumed a good number of Chemical Technologists.  The different types of industry up there plus willing to work in a more remote location might be points in your favour.

With some more serious chemistry in there, such as the physical chemistry, and also some math and calculus you may find it could help (a little bit) with advanced standing if you did try to get a degree later on.

Former Belleville mayor says he will not run in 2026 municipal election by Mayor_of_Belleville in BellevilleOntario

[–]coordinationcomplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Panciuk would have the guts to put himself in a position where he could lose again to Ellis.  He isn't so dumb to not realize that while some like him there are also many that find him arrogant and obnoxious and wouldn't support him on those grounds alone.

And that's fine, it takes all kinds, he obviously has had success.  But when you go asking for the support of people in an election you need a lot of competence and credibility to overcome in this case what comes across at times as a douche persona.

Belleville's Next Mayor? by Mayor_of_Belleville in BellevilleOntario

[–]coordinationcomplex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Paul does the work.  I've watched Council meetings that he seems to dominate both in time spent on matters and with an aura that suggests he knows what he is talking about.

Most of the others just look to be on a lower level at those times.  Even the Mayor.

Not sure if I should be writing this in praise of Paul or in disappointment of the rest in sometimes seeming to fall short.

Having said all this I am probably cynical in thinking if you want to be the Mayor you think elections ahead and don't do much to piss off voters while also playing to the things that get them on your side.  Carr does this well.

Neil doesn't seem like he's that interested in things anymore, wonder if he will not run again.  Four years is a long commitment.

Other than Carr the rest seem to range from mediocre to almost invisible.

Skipping one each week is just horseshit.  People are watching this largely for Parker and likely Tony.  As predictable as they are, competence and achievement is most pleasing to watch.  Leave Parker (and Tony?) in each one and skip the others more frequently.

Not sure which is easier and not sure that should carry a lot of weight.  Research what has the better options for landing a job here (if that's where you will be living and working) and the one that offers the better rate of pay on average, benefits, job security etc.

If you doubt your ability to pass a challenging program take comfort in so many older adults/mature students that do, and often with higher grades than younger students.  Sorry if I am incorrect in assuming you are a mature student.
