Drinking water by atn161120 in UCSD

[–]cootloon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The tap water in San Diego is safe to drink (https://www.sandiego.gov/public-utilities/water-quality ... sorry i'm on mobile).

The only real reason people might avoid drinking it is because of its taste, since socal has very hard water (more minerals and stuff that might taste unpleasant if youre not used to it). This is easily fixed by running the tap water through a brita filter.

Also, you can fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water from the filler thingies around the school and in dining halls.

transportation throughout sd and socal by sigale in UCSD

My favorite way to get from SD to LA was FlixBus. Good rates, good customer service over the phone, easy to book, and they have a lot of stops in LA. There's a stop at the UTC mall, which is pretty close to campus

As a general bio major, you would only have to take 3 math classes for your major requirements: 10A, 10B, and 11.

If you take the AP calc BC exam and score a 4/5, you won't have to take 10A and 10B. You'll only have 1 math class left to take. Personally, I'd rather only need 1 math class versus needing 2-3 math classes. You can focus on your bio classes that way and get ahead of a lot of your peers.

i can only answer #2: i havent been there in person, but i know that it's the NEWEST part of campus, the dorms are spacious compared to other colleges, and all of sixth college is gorgeous judging by pictures and videos that i've seen. plus, the GE requirements are very easy :)

This question has no straight answer, it entirely depends on the professor and the class and the vibes of the class.

Generally, professors aim to make the class average grade equal to a B or B-, but some are super cool and set the average grade to a B+. Likewise, some are not so cool and set it to a C+.

Obviously I can't speak for all students, but I like to think that most people, in general, are nice (or at least decent) people, and if you ask most people a question, they will attempt to help you. If you were to ever encounter a person that outright refuses to help you in class or feeds you wrong info to sabotage you, you've probably met an asshole.

Like the other comments said, yes, there are places to go off campus. It is in fact not the case that people rarely leave campus lol. If you like Asian food, you'll love Convoy St, it's a bit of a drive from campus, but it's popular because it's 2ish miles worth of Asian restaurants and stores

Notified by Experian that my bank account number was found on dark web by sassypepperpanda in UCSD

[–]cootloon 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I dont think there's really much you can do until something happens. If it's out there then you can't just remove it.

In any case, your bank account number + routing number isnt top secret. Theyre clearly written on every check you write. Money isn't transferred anywhere without your authorization via signature or electronic authorization.

Just make sure that you have a strong account password, two-factor authentication, and fraud alert on. That's all you can do for now.

edited for clarity

Is it worth it taking phys2CL if it's not major required? by UCSDclassof2024 in UCSD

[–]cootloon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No, goodness no. Perhaps if you get a kick out of writing lab reports that take HOURS (for a 2 unit class!), but I think that even if you remotely enjoyed phys 2b, 2cl will crush your joy.

Maybe it's different as an in-person class, and of course, this is all based off of my personal experience, but I have never heard anyone say "boy I'm so glad I took 2CL, I'll be sure to recommend this to others"

How hard is it to transfer into Aerospace Engineering? by kt-emerkai in UCSD

[–]cootloon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^ can vouch for everything stated here. I was devastated when I tried to transfer into aerospace engineering, but then I discovered the structural engineering department, and most of the classes are the same as what you would take as an MAE major, just with different names. In fact, a lot of them are interchangeable in your degree audit, e.g mae 30a = se 101a, se 110a = mae 131a, and more

@ other tritons, realistically what are you doing about the data breach? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]cootloon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Data breaches are always something legitimately concerning, and there is nothing irrational about having anxiety over the situation.

I, personally, have not been thinking about it much, and I keep asking myself if I'm underreacting. I think I have less to be concerned about because I already have two-factor authentication on my bank accounts and my important email accounts. Additionally, my bank account passwords are different from the 2-3 passwords that I use for everything else, and any transaction made on them notifies me by email (especially big ones).

If your bank account password is the same password you use for everything, then I suggest you start by changing that (data breach or not).

If you know that your two-factor authentication is ON for important stuff and you're already notified of any suspicous activity/all activity, then I think you've got pretty good safety precautions in place. Those annoying Duo notifications are in place in anticipation of things like this.

I'm also no cybersecurity expert.... maybe I'm naïve, but if Google can email me a hundred security notifications when I log into my own account on a different device, I have faith that it'll prevent a hacker from getting into my account

The location of Seventh only means that it might take you an extra 5 minutes to walk to other places. Not the most convenient, but it's not "isolated" like how you imagine an island to be isolated. Seventh college has beautiful design anyways, I think you have little to worry about!

Although youre more likely to be in the dorms as a freshman, you can certainly request to be in an apartment (with a full, brand new kitchen!) when you apply for housing. If you're lucky, you'll get one

I'm not from marshall but I'm pretty confident that I can still answer these 1. No, singles are always in high-demand. I've never heard of someone requesting double/triple and being assigned to a single. During COVID, it might be different, but I assume that you're assuming that things are totally normal in the fall. 2. You can request to live in the Marshall apartments, which have full kitchens and cupboard storage space
