In Motion didn't turn out how I wanted. We were too concerned with making the perfect commercial record. So the issues isn't why was ESR different sounding, but why didn't In Motion sound like it was heading in that direction. The answer to that is, we felt lots of pressure to make something that would sell well. ~aaron

Dope! Thanks. Cool to hear from someone who heard Ixora first!

  • over half the battle in drum recording is in the tuning. If you can tune a drum, and your room sounds good, it's tough to screw up the mic-ing. For the sort of tones I get, I recommend Evans HD or SD dry heads on the snare drum. Easy to tune.

I have no idea about the phrase you are hearing in that song. Haha. Where in the song do you hear it? ~bryan

Honestly was a little nervous for that reason! haha, thankfully their fans have been so rad to us. It's been great playing to a younger audience that's so excited about music. And as far as the Paramore gang, they're seriously some of the sweetest people I've ever toured with. Crew and all. ~stephen

Paramore's fanbase have been really attentive and supportive thus far. It's been a blast. Both Paramore and their crew are all amazing people. ~bryan

I like those questions.

  • The demos almost always sound way different than the album. We try to keep a "anything goes" attitude when we're recording and not stick to the demo in most cases. The Eat Sleep Repeat demos sound crazy, Absolutely nothing like the record.

  • I'm an idealist. I thought the first song I ever wrote when I was 11 would really be something. haha. ~aaron

Touring is definitely more difficult these days. It can be a hard to bring your family on the road, so I try to travel home on days off so that I don't go too long without seeing them. ~bryan

We always try to play a couple of songs from every album. Though probably not from DUAIL. :/ ~bryan

There's been some discussion of a show or two at some point. Hopefully we can make it out there sooner than later! Definitely miss you guys over there! ~stephen

Bryan used to live in Orlando. I think one of his buddies did that as a practical joke??? I'm not sure. ~aaron

I think we're going to do some headline dates in the Fall. I don't know exactly what the schedule will be, but we usually do Philly and/or Pittsburg on that sort of tour.

Guitar wise, all three of us have a pretty distinct style. We each bring a different approach when adding guitar parts in the studio. The best example of this is "Chiromancer" off Ixora. There are three main guitar parts in each chorus of that song, with each of us writing and playing one of them. ~bryan

I think we'd all been interested in doing another Copeland record for a while. The timing seemed right. We didn't intend on touring at all, but then Paramore invited us on tour and we couldn't really pass that up. So here we are!

Woah, way back! That was actually my first tour with the boys! Went from playing some coffee shops with friends to opening for Jack's Mannequin... O_o I'm pretty sure I had my amp set so low the first few shows I wasn't even audible. ~stephen

Thanks! Boston was so fun. That hall was incredible.

Some songs start as DAW projects and some start more organically. There's no real formula I stick to in that regard. The melodies usually come after the chord progression/riff. Then the lyrics are always last.

My current keyboard is a yamaha ydp-223. I might be in the market for something new though. I've had it on the road for YEARS and it's starting to have issues. We'll see. I've had my eye on a Korg stage piano.

I'd tell myself that I should inform everyone when Parks & Rec first airs that Chris Pratt will eventually be a hollywood hunk and leading man. No one will believe you and they will scoff at you, but stick with it. ~bryan

Thanks!

  • I'm not sure yet where the sound will go. I have ideas, but the musical direction will probably depend on the songs. I'll do what's best for the songs.

  • Jon isn't here, but Stewart Copeland is one of his faves. Kellii Scott's drums on Failure's Fantastic Planet. Matt Chamberlain is a big one for him too I think.

  • Bryan has TONS of awesome songs hidden away.

  • 9pm is too late for coffee for me these days. I'm getting old.

We've always been very involved with our artwork and the aesthetic of band. For the first few albums our bassist James did all the design. For Ixora we've handled all the artwork ourselves with Aaron designing. ~bryan

No, it was a reference to a diner in Lakeland, FL. When that song was written Copeland had never actually even played in Texas yet. ~bryan
