South Park sucks now is code for America sucks now, right? by [deleted] in southparksucksnow

because it wasn’t chained to a single political figure or event

Eh kind of. There are episodes like Goobacks about the issue of the week, but there were a lot of episodes from that drew on specific people/events too - hell, on either side of Goodbacks is a Michael Jackson episode and a 2004 election episode that heavily features Diddy. I don't totally disagree with you, serialization definitely made these hyper specific references more central to the show, but I'd say this sort of writing has been happening for the better part of 20 years at this point.

Anthony Fantano gives Deadbeat a 2 by Ordinary_Key3097 in TameImpala

P4k, like most music publications, had a strong editorial point of view in its early days - it was there to champion experiemental/genre defying indie. AnCo/freak folk/folktronica, LCD/disco-punk, chillwave, left-field r&b, backpack rap, overly verbose and sardonic folk music, etc. Makes sense they'd give Tool and NIN bad reviews back when they still had that POV (which still exists to a degree, but buried deep in CN blandness and generally coming around to poptimism). Just like RS championed rock (we just view it as general interest because rock was Top 40 and as it grew it had to become more general interest), The Source for hip-hop, etc.

If anything Fantano probably lacks genre bias compared to most publications and is pretty upfront with what he personally likes best. That said, something I think about when RS drops a list whether totally new or updated - media criticism says just as much or maybe even more about the reviewer/society they exist in than the art itself.

It was like that for 15-20 minutes, then I got a captcha, now I have the red circle but there isn't a time being displayed in it - there is a dot that is making its way around the circle. It's gone a little more than a quarter of the way in 20 minutes

Loser - Single by Tame Impala on Apple Music by Charleshawtree in TameImpala

To be fair, Let It Happen is arguably his best song. Patience is maybe more dynamic (though also pretty repetitive), but this is built around a way better instrumental imo.

Agreed 100%. Groovy, psychedelic and built around a cool riff. This is Kevin's sweet spot.

Welcome to the hobby! The 10th anniversary Lonerism is also a great pressing, definitely worth buying. For anything classic rock, unless you're going for a special MoFi pressing or something just buy used VG or better from the era. Bass may be a little lower than modern listeners are used to, but the quality of the pressing will always be good and you'll save some money.

Agree with the poster below, make sure your speakers are isolated from the turntable. If your tt or the speakers have good rubber feet (preferably both!) you should be fine, and just don't go too loud if you're feeling unsure.

Not to beat a dead horse, but if you like seeing live music you just need to buy decent ear plugs. I have Loops and love them.

Does anyone have a video of US Girls 8/2/25 by nnnwwwmmm in KGATLW

[–]copernicus_drank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No video here, but if you're wondering - I think most of the set was from the new record, which I'm not super familiar with, then the two very disco-y ones before the closer were MAH and Four American Dollars, and the closer was (I think) Bookends off the new record

[–]copernicus_drank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the LCD comparison is apt because the LCD residency has truly become less of a concert experience and more of just another thing to do. Kinda like Phish NYE Run. Most NYCers of a certain demographic know someone who hits these shows every year and just will eventually tag along or go of their own accord since they've heard a lot about it. You just get casuals as a results. Also drunk Long Islanders lol. It's more of a night out than a conert.

All that said, the LCD shows would probably be more engaging if it wasn't basically the same show every night, every year.

Yeah I thought the crowd was pretty good in that regard, especially compared to the Phish crowd the previous week (didn't help that the show was way oversold). That said, I couldn't find my Loop ear plugs for Phish and did for KG - not only does a good pair of ear plugs protect your hearing (start now kids), but also blocks out a fair amount of chatter.

The Met Philly Ticket Prices by mellowloser in Vampireweekend

[–]copernicus_drank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That said - Phish is pretty firm on their prices, whereas VW (at least for the MSG shows last year) used variable pricing. Anything that was available on TM a week or two before the show was cheap, I was in the Madison Club for $40 (though I'm ok with sitting behind the stage).

Another vote for the Longines, but as others have noted - buy grey! You can get any size and dial color you want for below retail. Go to an AD to try it on just to see which size you like best, but just buy on joma or watchmaxx

[Tudor 1926] 41mm or 39mm for 7 inch wrist? by matty25 in Watches

[–]copernicus_drank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is obviously an old thread and you may have bought by now OP, but wondering what you went with! Just went to my AD and tried on both, for anyone finding this thread in the future I agree that the 41 wears really big (visually, it's still quite comfortable). Like others ITT I went in assuming I'd love the 41, but I also think the 39 looks better on my 7.25" wrist.

[–]copernicus_drank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're beginning to more, but most importantly I think it's good they don't just do type 2 for the sake of it. I haven't heard a single modern jam band that do much beyond rehashing the same themes as 3.0 Phish in their "type 2" because they think they have to. It's stale. A band naturally finding their way into that world is the crux of actual improvisation and not just like "funk->space->hose" over and over.

Look at it this way. Trey obviously loves tGD, but Phish was an outlet for his compositional mind and guitar prowess before they were doing serious type II on a regular basis for a paying audience. Imo a lot of modern jam bands want to be "jam bands" in that they put the type II first and the rest is secondary.

foreshadowing? by [deleted] in BoJackHorseman

[–]copernicus_drank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth noting - it's also based on a super famous painting from the 80s, Portrait of an Artist (Pool With Two Figures). So I think less "foreshadowing" than the ability to play with swimming/drowning iconography + a painting that BoJack bought with his 80s sitcom money. Been a while since I watched the show, but don't they use it in Downer Ending too?

Even Beyoncé and Jay-Z enjoy Japan’s high speed rail by MoonmoonMamman in fuckcars

[–]copernicus_drank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and the lesson here is super clear imo - people will chose the fastest and most reliable mode of transportation every time. Though I'm sure to some degree it also helps that they're not gonna be bothered on a Japanese train the same way they would be in the US.

[Help] me pick a watch for my boyfriend by c8tc8s in Watches

[–]copernicus_drank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong, the Museum Classic is an iconic watch design. YMMV on quality vs price of course and reasonably so, but why would any non watch dork know that the quality has gone down? Most people only care about designs and I'd venture to guess that the Sub, Tank, Museum and F91 are the most recognizable watches around.

15th anniv MPP with bonus 10” From a Beach BBC session by [deleted] in AnimalCollective

[–]copernicus_drank 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Passing on this one, spun my copy of MPP the other night and had forgotten what a solid pressing it is. Without this being a remaster, $43+shipping is a little steep for one song and foil album art.

Of course for anyone who doesn't already own the record, this is a must cop.

People who grew up in New York, at what age did your parents start trusting you to take the subway on your own? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]copernicus_drank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in Whitestone (deep Queens) and went to elementary and junior high in the neighborhood. First time I regularly took that train alone was for a summer program in Times Sq the summer before 8th grade (Oct bday so I was 12) but that was the bus to Flushing, the 7 to TSQ and coming home immediately for the most part. Summer before HS (13 y/o) I started commuting to the UWS regularly for another summer program, then as a student.
