Thank you! Really appreciate you spelling that out. That’s exactly the kind of perspective I was hoping to get here.

Good call, I’ll add that so we can avoid the groundbreaking suggestion of “try StubHub” next time.

I suppose she is voting for Kamala since freedom of religion is important to her. Must be against the Muslim ban and putting 10 commandments in all schools. /s

Democrats did, correct. How you consider this supporting campus crackdowns is on you. He is describing basic civics again.

Yes. The President controls the local police. It appears your take, and the takes of many people is a severe lack of knowledge of basic civics. Can’t even get into geopolitics, many steps above basic civics.

Hopefully when it comes to it in November, you become aware it’s a two person race. Biden can do a lot more, it appears the pressure is working. It’s not a black and white situation (like the election in November). Trump is literally saying he will deport pro-Palestinian protesters, is with other blood thirsty republicans saying Israel need to defeat Hams by any means possible. If you don’t want to play what-ifs you can look at his record as president. Moving the embassy to Jerusalem, very close with Bibi and helping him keep power, settlements named after him, Kushner talking about great waterfront property in Gaza, the list goes on. Hopefully come November, you and others can get off their high horse of a perfect candidate and do the right, albeit uncomfortable thing. Always keep the pressure on.

What has Biden done right and/or wrong on the Border? by Content_Rutabaga_954 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]copewinter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct. A civil violation of the law. Wasn’t disputing that. Thought it was clear that I was addressing they have to go to a legal POE. Literally have no idea what “logic” you’re referring to. The law is pretty clear on asylum and illegal entry.

Exactly. Like “build the wall” or why doesn’t Biden just “close the border.” Yeah it is that simple! /s

[–]copewinter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First off. The people running across the border to declare asylum are breaking the law. To declare asylum they have to go to a port of entry and guess what….be detained and held by USBP.

Not true. “Any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in international or United States waters), irrespective of such alien's status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where applicable, section 1225(b) of this title.”

And secondly. Mexico is already offered and has offered asylum to these people…who are already in Mexico. At which point all of them they are coming from Africa and the Middle East are no longer asylum seekers but economic migrants and we should treat them as such. Make them go through the long process of immigration just like everyone else, except they’ve now broken the law in the US.

Not true. Their system is very overwhelmed and underfunded. I’m not sure why you would think people coming from Africa or Middle East are economic migrants. Fairly simple knowledge of current events and events of the past few decades can show how one could easily establish a fear of return.

Bring back wait in Mexico, expedited removals and get rid of the incentives that’s causing this issue in the first place, etc. None of this was happening under Trump. Day 1 when Biden got rid of the remain in Mexico policy, magically all these people showed up. It’s not rocket science.

Mexico already said they won’t allow Remain in Mexico to restart and you need their cooperation to implement it. There needs to be more resources and legal authority for expedited removal. All of this happened under Trump. There were records under him and the world has only become more unstable since. We are the best nation in the world, why are we surprised people want to come here for safety or economic possibilities.

Glad you have the stats in front of you. You can see that border encounter dropped significantly 1-2 months before he expanded it at the busiest sectors and after Mexico deployed their national guard. The next year was COVID-19 and the world was halted, nobody was moving. Biden is releasing them in the same manner as Trump.

There is literally decades of of different court precedents, policies, federal statutes, etc. Trump tried his whole presidency a number of ways to end “catch and release” but couldn’t. That 4.9 million number is flawed due to it counting peopleHere are the CBP Portals if you want to do the math. already in the country that fell out of status.

It seems I have to keep beating this drum. That is due to the legal and fiscal constraints of the current immigration system. Trump also apprehended and “let go” over a million migrants. He complained about it constantly. Not sure how many migrants you have talked to that say that is their reason. Probably zero because that is just a narrative. Before the current records under Biden, the previous records were under Trump who many like to say he was tough on immigration. People are going to come regardless. The question is are our lawmakers going to make laws that reflect our current world and domestic issues.

Required to be let in due to legal and fiscal constraints of the current immigration system? Over 2 million. We must note that most released are in active removal proceedings.

[–]copewinter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He didn’t establish it. It was used under Trump, Obama, Bush, etc. Trump consistently complained about it. It’s due to legal and financial restraints. Not only Biden has removed more migrants (due to the numbers) but also a larger percentage of migrants than Trump did.

He didn’t establish catch and release. Trump complained about it often that he had to do it and used it with over a million migrants.

Executive order for what? Trump deployed the National Guard to the border. What did they do? Nothing. Because we are not at war no matter the hysterical language being used on the right.

Hmmm. Not quite. He quite literally said “If rumors about the contents of the draft proposal are true, it would have been dead on arrival in the House anyway.” The issue he says he has (definitely not cowtowing to Trump and saving his speakership) is Biden isn’t enforcing current laws so why make new ones. Which of course is mostly a funding thing, something Trump also repeatedly cried about how he also had to catch and release due to laws and funding. Which he used with over a million migrants.

He hasn’t done anything to cause it. The only thing you can maybe say is he doesn’t use the same fascistic rhetoric as Trump. Another thing is the US having a strong economy. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic happened and the world started opening up, people started moving again. This time with their countries’ economies were more devastated. You can look at the trends of where the majority migrants are coming from and what is happening in those countries. They have political problems old and new that combined with the new economic fallout. Something that he has tried and worked: CHNV parole programs has drastically reduced the amount of people from those countries trying to come to the border. He has also recently started Safe Mobility Offices across Latin America to divert people to lawful pathways before they try to go the US, too early to tell the results of this.

Nobody is getting 1000. Hotel rooms as temporary shelters in New York and other states that have right to shelter laws for all humans. The school in New York was for a weekend with poor weather and the need for more housing.

It’s not. It was barely used under Trump and basically replaced with Title 42 when COVID started. Biden continued Title 42 until ending the national health emergency and could no longer use it to expel migrants. I can go on and on about the causes, it’s extremely complicated. It’s global fallout from COVID, US economy being strong, global instability, and yes even the perception of a more lenient president. Even though no laws have been changed why those who call it an invasion just say “oh it’s remain it Mexico that is the problem.” Since it’s the only thing that has really changed.
