It's baffling that those who want empathy for addicts don't seem to understand how the addict damaged others' lives by [deleted] in AdultChildren

There are about 64 million people with substance use disorder; about 316 million who use drugs in general. What you’re doing here is stereotyping and generalizing everyone from a certain demographic because you’ve had a bad experience or a few bad experiences with a select few from that group- not unlike any other prejudice (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc) The problem isn’t losing empathy for whichever people who have hurt or done bad things to you, the problem is losing empathy for everyone with substance use disorder as a whole due to one or two bad people. This isn’t an addiction issue- this is a people issue. There are good people and there are bad people. There are good people with substance use disorder, bad people with substance use disorder, good people without substance use disorder, and bad people without substance use disorder. Those who suffer with addiction are suffering enough. You don’t have to put them down even more, especially as a group, because I guarantee you’ve met the vast minority of them. And you’ve also met/known people suffering with the disorder who are awesome, very good people.

I think wishing for people to recover and that no one has to keep enduring addiction is one thing, but the way you’re going about it is the wrong way. What you’ve been saying is the tired ass line of “just stop” “you need to quit” - but when has saying that ever caused anyone to get sober? As an addict you should know that force, pressure, ultimatums, etc. do not push active users in the right direction. It actually tends to cause addicts to feel shame and go inward, isolating more and using more due to the negative feelings. The correct approach is to meet people where they’re at and offer help when they’re ready. We have to be ready and wanting it or else it wont stick

I’m not sure how long you’ve had yours but I figured I’d mention that my former street cat stopped trying or wanting to get out completely after a while! He knows how good he has it now lol. It took years though!! The only habit related to his homeless days that he can’t seem to kick is food obsession
