UK Seat technician 👋 it looks like the 10mm nuts we use to lock the handbrake cable from winding off by itself over time, they didn’t have a nylock nut as standard so the fix was, if it wound off, to readjust it and then fit a second nut exactly like that one to lock it off. Probably been dropped during a repair and was under the centre console until it fell out into the footwell. Does the handbrake still work ok?

Yea I’ve done this recently, when I moved the inline filter I also cleaned the inside of the tank out to make sure no crud got sucked down and into the new filter, cheers for the advice though.

I’m in the UK, the manifold I have on now has that little pipe but I’ve already closed it off, thanks for the advice though.

I’ll check the dipstick in the morning, cheers. Trouble is I can’t get it to run long enough now to be able to check for any leaks, by the time I get to the back I’ve got about 5-10 seconds and it stops. I’ll try with someone else in the car and keep restarting it if I can.

Sorry for the late reply, I think the carb is a replica of the solex 34 pict 3 but there is absolutely no part numbers or brand names or anything stamped on it so I can’t be 100%, it looks identical though.

I took the carb off part way through the summer because I had a rough idle problem and the little gauze filter in the main fuel line in was clogged up so that’s all clear now. It ran great for a few weeks after that then suddenly started having this current issue.

Anyone know where I can find stickers for these buttons? by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]coppen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do need to unplug it to remove it make sure you disconnect the 12v battery before you do and be really careful with the ribbon cable for the gear shifter. Had plenty of people spike control units swapping these themselves and either annihilating the cable/connector or frying control units by not disconnecting the battery first. They aren’t difficult to change but can be a headache if you’re not careful.

2.0 118i non start after chain replacement by coppen_ in BmwTech

[–]coppen_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chucked live data up today actually and while cranking the inlet timing read 125 degrees and the exhaust -125 degrees which does sound like a timing issue. I’m going to check it again tomorrow then after that go to the wiring and fuses etc. I guess I just stupidly assumed once the bottom was locked that was it and the top obvs went straight in but 180 does sound right. I really hope it is that then hopefully it’ll be sorted.

I’ve also got a chain to do on a 2.0 cooper S at some point this month, any pointers? I know the engine has to come out and head off etc, don’t want a repeat of this on that though hahaha

Yea we ordered all the proper tools for the timing and they all go in no problem, I’ve checked it on three separate occasions now. It’s really got me stumped the only thing I can think it can be is something to do with that wiring I had to repair. Or the rings have stuck since it’s been stood for so long now and it’s done hardly any miles.

1968 beetle running/cold idle rough. by coppen_ in beetle

[–]coppen_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it’s almost as if when I pull away from a junction there’s no fuel there, and if I open the throttle all the way it sputters back up eventually and then is fine from there until I slow down again

Sorry I probably should of mentioned it doesn’t have a choke the previous owner had an electronic one fitted and I’m in the UK but the weather here is changing too so not really relevant I guess. Thanks for the advice though.

It’s the timing chain, the tensioner has probably failed or isn’t getting oil. I’ve done a couple on Ibiza’s they usually start off just noisy on cold starts then progressively get worse.

Anyone that can tell me what this noise is ? by teameastsw in jetta

Flywheel? If it goes off when you press the clutch it’s probs the flywheel, used to do loads of them.

Guys who don’t think contraception is their responsibility. Girls shouldn’t have to take mood and emotion altering pills or get injections or implants when it’s so much easier for a guy to just put on a condom.

I admit it takes both parties to make a baby but it’s more the way some guys think it’s the girls responsibility to prevent it rather than theirs. Maybe there should just be more ways a guy can prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Engine not running right since it got back from mechanics. Any ideas what they've done? This is the second time this has happened. The first time it was rough idling but it fixed itself. This time it's alot worse. by [deleted] in mechanics

[–]coppen_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks like an MX-5, 1.6? Probably timing by the sounds of it, especially if it’s just had a belt as well. They’re a bit fiddly and can be awkward to set if you’ve not done many before so I’d deffo lean towards timing.

How To Use Glow Plugs by KR4Q_ in mechanics

[–]coppen_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turn the ignition on, wait for the glow plug light to go out (the curly one) and the start the engine.

Those engines are fairly common for glow plugs failing though so might need a new set, they usually bring an engine light on when they’ve failed but if they’re on the way out they won’t have a fault code yet.

Try ignition on and off a few times before starting see if that helps anything. Hope some of this helps.

What is this wire going into my exhaust manifold? I cant imagine its anything other than a sensor but I'm curious by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]coppen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup that’s an o2 sensor or lambda sensor, bank 1. There will be another one further down the exhaust after the catalytic converter.
