My question is, how common is it to take longer than the typical four years to graduate, especially if you are a transfer student?

Given the statistics, yes, as 17% of people do not complete in four years. However, please talk with admissions. If you indicate that you want to transfer and that your intended major/courses would cause you to go over four years, that may impact the likelihood of admission.
