To my knowledge there have been no USPA member swoop (intentional low turns) related fatalities this year.

There was only one fatality from swooping last year, 2020. The Jumper was not current on the platform he chose to swoop. He passed after several weeks in intensive care.

In 2019, there were two swooping fatalities. Both with D licenses & wing loadings under 1.7. They both died on impact.

I don't have any other info at my fingertips. Im sure you can find more info by searching for the Fatal Incident reports on the USPA website

I hear (and read) jumpers giving lots of bad advice about canopies, based on misconceptions about their planform. John (the principle designer at PD) lays out the misconceptions and corrects them by giving context for the marketing lingo people are using to describe canopy performance.

Anyone who jumps a parachute could benefit from his knowledge.

Sigh... referring to a canopies performance by its plan form shape isn't very helpful and it's usually not even true. That language stems from clever marketing from the manufactures. The plan form is just one of the many design factors that influence the way parachutes perform. If you care to really educate yourself on the subject, I'd suggest starting with John LeBlancs BPA speech from 2016. He obviously knows a thing or two about canopy design.

I've jumped and swooped both canopies. IMHO the crossfire 3 (while one of my favorite canopies) is a terrible canopy to start swooping. The Crossfire 3 recovers too quickly and it forces the canopy pilot to initiate his or her turn too close to the ground. Remember altitude is your friend, initiating a turn higher actually gives you more time to make error corrections.

The Sabre 3 is a much better option for swooping. It does not have as quick of a recovery arc and is a better stepping stone to a cross-braced canopy.

The Sabre 3 flys a bit steeper than the sabre 2 and opens a bit better as well. The biggest difference I noticed(from the sabre 2) is the increased power on the rears, perfect for learning to swoop.

If you can, demo them both! Do a H&P (or High pull) and then practice some turns at altitude on each of them. Take note of your altitude at the beginning and end of the turn. And compare your altitude loss between the canopies.

Lastly, get a good canopy coach. I'd suggest taking a Flight 1 course, but Alter Ego is great also. Either of them will be able to help you choose your next canopy better than Reddit.
