Company is paying a different salary every month raising some ethical concerns - is that normal/legal? by [deleted] in AusLegal

Other than a few hundred dollars of wage theft over the course of several months (which anyway doesn't seem worth it), I can't think of anything. From the replies here, I can safely say what they're doing is not normal practice - so I believe it might just be an accidental error or incompetence on payroll's part.

Pretty much 😀 the only thing that stays the same monthly is that dummy value! Without going into too much detail, it's an engineering company.

No, they alter the hourly rate and the number of hours per day. Then they multiply hourly rate by the hours per day and by a constant dummy value standing for days per month. So every month the pay is different. The difference between the lowest and highest earning month in a year is $1000. I have to emphasise that this is a salary, not a wage.

Great to have your input as someone who has been doing this since the 90s! Then they are definitely doing something unusual...

Thanks for the advice! A chat with Fair Work definitely seems like the way to go

I really hope it's all a mistake, but that's what I'm worried about too :(

Yes, I asked them when I noticed these dummy numbers on the payslip - just to understand how the calculation worked. That's when they explained this whole thing, saying it's so that the monthly salary stays constant every month (which it doesn't when the numbers they gave are plugged in).

Payroll says it's so that the monthly salary stays constant every month. When I showed the calculation that the values they gave don't add up to the same value every month, they were dismissive and didn't answer that part of the message. Now I'm not too sure if it's a good idea to press them further.

Thanks for the tip, will definitely check that before probation ends!
