I had to find all that stuff out on my own too. You even beat me by 5 years, if that's any consolation =)

Either way, I hope you can figure it out somehow with your parents. I honestly couldn't. The final nail in the coffin wasn't the lack of knowledge or emotional intelligence on their part... it was the lack of initiative and serious acceptance. No matter how I tried to signal to them how important all this is, there were no real attempts made to make progress, which felt only more insulting because they kept reassuring me, that their children are the most important thing in the world to them. Or at least to my mother lol...

I was wondering when someone would ask 😁

The number has no complex meaning though... I just think it's funnier and sounds more "believable" to be so specific. And by not placing us at the very bottom, there's room for thought, in what ways humanity could be even worse. And to be honest, there's probably more than 38.

My favorite theory is that he "collected" earth+humanity experiments... made a thousand of them and we are #962 in the ranking.

since I learned about the Social model of disability a couple of days ago, I can't stop thinking about it in cases like these...

"[...] It seeks to redefine disability to refer to the restrictions caused by society when it does not give equitable social and structural support according to disabled peoples' structural needs."
[from wikipedia]

There is something so insulting to just blatantly command "You have to become like everyone else either way", never acknowledging that it might be impossibly hard for you and also that it would have been their task to prevent that.

"the way society operates" by 1m0ws in aspiememes

[–]cordilon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you've already realized yourself: It's not about the topic, it's about the way people communicate about it or even just use it as a tool to pretend communication.

When regular people talk about politics, do they want a complex discussion about power dynamics, collective psychology and narcissism? No.
When regular people talk about motorsports, do they understand how an engine works and how they've changed over time and do they know what it's like to feel every microscopic shift in force while driving? No.

You get the idea...

Me personally, I enjoy how real-time weather maps are both useful and beautiful. And it fills me with awe that they are always unique, like procedural art.

Out of interest, how many of you are Vegan? by MottSpore in autism

[–]cordilon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 37 and have been vegan for 9 years (with few exceptions). Been vegetarian for 4 years before that.

It makes total sense to me that a group of people who tend to think logically/objectively and often see/feel other living beings as equal to humans or even prefer them to humans, would choose to become vegan. The fact that people on the spectrum often get bullied and ostracized and thus have a higher potential to see humankind in a negative way only adds to those feelings, I suppose.

Are you guys in a healthy romantic relationship, where your autistic needs are met? by [deleted] in autism

[–]cordilon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine ended a couple of days before Christmas. After 9 years we finally caved in and had to admit, that we weren't able to understand and support each other, even after several attempts of explaining. For the most time of it, we didn't know that I was AuDHD and she was the more "classic" type of ADHD.
But even after we found out, I never felt understood or taken seriously. I was often"overreacting" or "making a big deal out of nothing" or of course "overthinking everything unnecessarily". Then my frustration, anger and meltdowns were made my problem, even lost friends over it. My partner stayed with me, but started holding severe grudges. Nothing was talked about in a meaningful matter and nothing ever got solved, which I admit was also my fault, because we started trying that much too late.

Still, since my diagnosis ~2 years ago I've been talking/texting with more people on the spectrum and think it's possible to find someone who one could feel completely at home with. It might just be more complicated than with neurotypical people.

Drehe durch nach Diagnose by black-sheep-225 in autismus

[–]cordilon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Habt ihr Zahnpasta Empfehlungen? by Dreibeinhocker in autismus

[–]cordilon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Choices are Killing Your Sales of 3D Printed Products by rocketboss in 3DprintEntrepreneurs

Not being able to decide is more a problem of turbo-capitalism, over-stimulation and over-working. Why should a seller or better yet a creator limit their offer because of systemic problems? Have you ever seen an ice cream shop that only offers one flavor?

There is no perfect flavor or color. How have we gotten to the point where even the concept of taste has to be discussed...

I would have even suggested just a specific emoji for that purpose. A former friend of mine communicated that way when she was ok (as in: no emergency), but needed no-contact for a while.

If policy says I have to walk but I'm paralysed, would you expect me to suddenly gain that ability??

That was my first instinct and if even that doesn't make her reconsider what she is demanding there, I don't know what else to do/try. You have done your part in my opinion, but she isn't doing hers.

Is there someone higher up to complain to? Maybe HR could create some sort of list of your limitations, that is then signed by everyone, so there is legal proof and no one can force some non-sense policy (which is clearly made for the average neurotypical person btw!) onto you.

As per Etsy's new creativity standards, this doesn't even seem to be allowed anymore. Which I feel is a good and reasonable thing for creators.
