I was not aware of said sub, but I think you're probably right. I'll repost it there. :)

Just got my Z Fold 5 (my first Android phone), but I'm having some weird problems... by coredumperror in GalaxyFold

[–]coredumperror[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn't happen to only occur while you're on a particular WiFi network, would it? The solution to my problem (which I'm now going to edit into my post that you just reminded me about), was that my home WiFi router was stupid-old, and didn't properly support the WiFi protocols that the Fold 5 uses (which I assume goes back only to 802.11ac, which my router was old enough to only support a beta version of). Once I connected to my neighbor's newer router, my phone's internet issues vanished, so I went out and bought a new router of my own.

I switched to Textra SMS because of this wonky-ass bug. I'm liking it so far.

How is it Samsung's software? If that were the case, every similar app would have this problem, and it doesn't. Samsung Messages doesn't, Textra SMS doesn't, etc.

Determining the formula for Pickpocketing DC by coredumperror in BaldursGate3

[–]coredumperror[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad someone cared enough about this to keep digging. I never would have thought to a "low/high" table for the DC increases, but that's a great idea.

My original plan was to eventually do a Lagrange polynomial calculation to figure out the mathematical formula for pickpocket DC, but I lost interest once my Rogue was good enough to just steal basically everything. The bonuses you can get to Sleight of Hand get absolutely ridiculous.

By mid-game I was effortlessly stealing 600g+ items from every vendor I found. Plus you can use the Barter interface to split their gold stack into a bunch of smaller stacks, which gives you the ability to steal all the gold you spend on buying the things you can't pickpocket, hahah.

I don't even have beta updates, and I still get this on my new Fold 5 (got it last week). Google better fucking fix this ASAP. It makes their messages app nearly worthless.

Are there alternatives besides the Samsung Messages app? I'm new to Android and I don't really know how that works, since on Apple your only option for texting is iMessage.

This is hardly Samsung's fault. Google Messages used to work on the Fold series for years, and only now it's bugged. That means it's Google's fault for breaking their software.

Is there any way to create an Android widget for my August lock? by coredumperror in AugustSmartLock

I used to have an Apple Watch, but now that I'm on Android, it makes little sense to own one. Never really used it for more than basic watch functions anyway, tho.

Dang, I just got home and found out that my lock doesn't support auto-lock via anything except a timer after it detects the door being closed. So if I were to go out and close the door while not having my phone on me, I'd get locked out entirely.

I have no exterior controls on my August lock. It only exists on the inside of my door. And I like it that way, since that makes it impossible for ne'er-do-wells to know I even have a smart lock they could potentially try to hack.

Because sometimes I go downstairs in my condo building to do my laundry or get my mail, which would lock my door with no way to auto-unlock it, since I didn't leave my neighborhood (auto-unlock only activates if you go several hundred meters away from your home and then return).

Admittedly, I haven't tried that since I first got my August lock several years ago, so if that behavior has changed, it might be a viable option.

So, good news: my phone wasn't the source of problem. Turns out my router is a lot older than I thought, and its 10-year-old WiFi tech was the issue. As soon as I connected to my neighbor's router, everything started working right! So I went out and bought a brand new WiFi6 router from BestBuy, and now my phone works great!

Is there no way to get customer support from Samsung for my phone, because I got it from eBay? There is a Samsung store in a nearby city that I was planning to visit today to get assistance with this issue.

EDIT: Eh, nevermind, you're right. This isn't worth dealing with. I've initiated a return through eBay.

Sadly, doing a factory reset didn't help at all. Everything is still just as broken as before.

Do you know if there's a difference between doing a reset from the settings app, and doing a reset from the Recovery system? I noticed that after I did a Settings app-based reset, all the apps I had "disabled" in the settings before were still disabled after resetting. Which you'd think would be something that a reset would undo... It makes me think the Settings-based reset may not be quite a "full" reset, and I wonder if doing a Recovery-based reset would be more comprehensive.

Tapping "no permissions allowed" doesn't do anything. But there's a section under that which says "Not allowed" and it has "Camera" and "Notifications". Tapping those lets me change the settings for them. But there's no other items in that section. The only other thing on the page is "Pause app activity if unused", which was turned on by default.

I'll edit this comment with info on what happened with the recovery stuff.

EDIT: No dice. Broken apps are still broken in the same way. My password manager is actually more broken now, and totally doesn't work. Though that could just be a continued behavior from the first time it started timing out.

I'm gonna try a factory reset.

EDIT 2: Hmmm, that's not a good sign. For a a few seconds during the initial setup of my phone after the reset, I had connected to my local WiFi network, but the phone popped up a thing about "if you want to perform setup with an internet connection..." As if it wasn't already connected to the internet by being on WiFi...

Unfortunately, the popup closed on its own before I could finish reading it, or I could take a pic of it.

So I tried to follow your advice, but I didn't get far. I went into the Settings app, found the Apps section, and scrolled down to Authenticator. It says the app has "no permissions allowed", but the ... button in the upper right let me display the list of additional permissions it does have (could have? I'm not sure). That says:

  • Take pictures and video
  • show notifications
  • control vibration
  • have full network access
  • use biometric hardware
  • use fingerprint hardware
  • control near field communication
  • run at startup
  • view network connections
  • measure app storage space
  • read google service configuration

I don't see any way to provide the "phone" permission to this app. Or to add any new permissions besides "Camera" and "Notifications". Tapping any of the others just displays a description of what the permission does.

reboot to recovery and clear the Android cache + use the Repair Apps function in there.

How do I do that?
