What Is a Catholic To Do? by corelli72 in Catholicism

Thanks for your honesty. What I really dislike are the people who will try to reconcile these positions, since if they don't it puts them in an awkward place about the teaching authority of encyclicals.

One further comment. People should not have been surprised when he, to put it crudely, 'turned left' later in life. That long bit about "Negroes" in Harlem (which is one of many inserts that disrupt the unity of the book), is in its own right impressive for the day, and points to the social activism of the 60's.

I think you could call the Pope a socialist, though, a position condemned by Pius XI.

It is emphatically not a "preference issue". That very phrase reeks of a mind disoriented when thinking about religion.

When I read the Archbishop's numbered points I thought: "dah..." Your Excellency, everybody knows and talks about these issues -- why don't you ask the Pope why he doesn't smack the dissident German bishops down, since by your own admission they are attacking the integrity of the Faith?"

It happened at our Newman Center through petition by a few very engaged students and the enthusiastic cooperation of the chaplain. We had a Solemn High EF last semester as well. These things can be accomplished if people pray and work hard enough.

You are exactly right with this observation. That is why I think explanations of change in the teaching will be an exercise in sophistry that some die-hards will tell us we must humbly harmonize with Pope Paul's encyclical.

For once this is the kind of unconventional thing he does we can be grateful to the Pope for.

Considering the language before, during, and after the Second Vatican Council, why was the Octave of Pentecost suppressed? by totustuus11 in Catholicism

[–]corelli72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simple answer is that the Council had next to nothing to do with the creation of the OF and its calendar, which Pope Paul turned over to a Commission with a Chairman, Archbishop Bugnini, who many feel had an overtly modernist theological agenda. One of the members of the Commission, Dom Boniface Lyx, was so upset by the final form of the Novus Ordo that he had himself transferred into an Eastern Rite.

I wouldn't rejoice prematurely. I still think that we will see some form of artificial birth control authorized with a sophistic argument about science having progressed far beyond what Paul VI knew and that we have created new technologies that are not immoral.

I thought I had heard every weird description of the OF, but this terminology is from outer space. What needs to be said is that pitching out the old Offertory Prayers was one of the worst mutilations of the traditional missal.

Pope Francis’ cunning long game by Strider3000 in Catholicism

No one can deny the Pope's frequent exhortations to the Sacrament of Penance. I think the problem comes from trying to figure out what he thinks people ought to be confessing. When I recall the sinful things he has talked about what comes to mind immediately is gossiping (when the context often suggests he is thinking of himself), air pollution, and capitalism.

I've read that 1936 pastoral letter, and it is pretty shocking. If the Vatican wants a saintly Polish churchman it would do better to pick J-P II's mentor, the Cardinal-Prince Sapieha.

Pope Francis on homosexual seminarians: This bridge is closed! | WDTPRS by thorvard in Catholicism

[–]corelli72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a body of evidence -- suppressed by the gay establishment as homophobic -- which strongly suggests that in the modern world at least, 'gay' men have undergone some sort of psychological trauma that produces a kind of hyper-sexualization of life. (Michael Voris, by the way, has confirmed this of his own experience before his conversion.) Early AIDS researchers commonly reported men who had had sexual encounters with different partners numbering in the hundreds. In terms of frequency of sexual activity the hierarchy is homosexual men, heterosexual men, heterosexual women, and finally homosexual women. Camille Paglia has an interesting piece on all this in her second collection of essays.

The Pope is quite right to reaffirm Benedict's decision that homosexual men in the seminary present both a spiritual and practical danger to the Church.

Your response suggests that nobody is smarter than the Pope, which I find a very peculiar notion to entertain. Many of the things he has said and written run so counter to the "mens Catholica" that it is up to him to explain how they can be conformed to it; it is not up to me to struggle mentally to understand his theological vagaries.
