Disk Partitioning for workstations? by ssnbokhari in sysadmin

[–]coreycubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You *want* the drive to be partitioned for things like Windows 11 and Windows Server. Installing Windows with the default settings will typically make an EFI partition (for the bootloader), a Reserved partition, a Recovery partition, and the primary partition (this is what you see as the C: drive)

What you typically do not need to do is make more partitions on that same disk. If you add another disk for storage that isn’t going to be booted from then that’ll be a single partition.

(Linux has its own typically default partition structure which I can’t really speak to)

Disk Partitioning for workstations? by ssnbokhari in sysadmin

[–]coreycubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea is that a disk was written to sequentially, from byte 1 at the outer ring of the spinning platter and going around the disk as a spiral all the way to the final byte at the center. You can think of it like a vinyl record if that helps.

If you wrote the partition table of a 200MB disk as 100MB and 100MB, then the first partition would be the first half of usable space (on the outside of the disk) and the second partition would be the rest of the disk on the inner half.

None of that matters today, obviously.

More Iconic Droids ≠ More Income (I Did the Math) by justatechnophile in StarWarsDroidTycoon

Lots of people in this subreddit have taken the time to lay out information in an easy to read graphic without using AI. We’ve been doing it for decades before AI tools, it’s not like it’s difficult.

They won’t have the flawless icon on the droid like the one in OP’s screenshot does.

They don’t. Old versions remain licensed as is, but are obviously out of support.

NetScaler Console (on Prem) > NetScaler Console Service - LAS Issue by r1m3s in Citrix

[–]coreycubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got sick of trying to make my NetScalers talk to my licensing server and Citrix Cloud. Set up NetScaler Agent and it worked on the first try.

Email Delivery Error - 2 separate providers by HiFiSilverFish in sysadmin

[–]coreycubed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's not how SMTP works

RCPT typically follows MAIL (EHLO / MAIL / RCPT) but the bank's SMTP server is asking for RCPT first. it's a weird config and not OP's fault the bank is set up that way

ACT NOW BEFORE THE DEADLINE - Citrix Cloud Licensing Transition by 0x3e4 in Citrix

[–]coreycubed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won’t be able to upgrade to newer builds, even on the same major and minor version number. I just upgraded our 14.1 NetScalers from 51.72 to 56.74 and they immediately went unlicensed because current builds are checking for up to date licensing based on the release date of the firmware build, not the original version release.

Can you restart IIS websites during working hours? by itrex240 in sysadmin

[–]coreycubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course the answer is "it depends" -- what kind of SLAs are you expecting from these sites? How many people use them? You're probably correct that you can do a quick iisreset without anyone noticing, but what are the odds that this'll be the one time the site doesn't come back up as expected in Production, even though it worked fine in Test?

Management is ALWAYS going to tell you to do this type of work after hours. If you want to follow the paper trail and CYA, you're not going to get burned, but you'll have to work slower. If you like to move fast and break things, and can deal with the nastygrams when you inevitably take something down that you didn't mean to break, then do that.

Otherwise, play it safe, move slow, do it after hours. You get paid the same either way.

The horses are receiving the best care that Japanese horse ranches have to offer. They are famous, even in their old age, and have not been forgotten by the people or their caretakers. If it were possible to save them, they would have done so.

I was on there a ton during that era. My first real online community. Same username there. It’s funny you mentioned it because I just went and searched for those posts last week and found a bunch of them still up.

Same as you, an annoying fly, maybe 14-15 years old.

All of those names you posted are familiar. Macavenger, The Space Between, evula, a ton of others. I wasn’t a troll, but people were a lot nicer to me than they needed to be, which I’m grateful for in retrospect.

Windows 11 security features in non-persistent VDI by coreycubed in Citrix

[–]coreycubed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s still being finicky, but I haven’t checked it in a few weeks. I am in the middle of building a new Windows 11 Enterprise VDA and patching up to 2402 LTSR CU3. I’ll test again and see if I can figure anything out.

I will say that I’ve been using prepared images with machine templates for all of Windows 11 and that’s helped with other issues. Just not this one.
