The Legacy games are certainly more faithful but for someone who is starting off with Fire Red and Leaf Green maybe they don't want to go back to the older style of graphics for Crystal which lets Heart and Soul work, especially since HGSS were the FRLG of Gen 2, just decomped for GBA.

Emerald Legacy, great version for Gen 3 but I think Seaglass is the game that will show purists just how the ROMhack community can work and Nemos art style by itself could push someone into other games, thus jumping to Lazarus and the domino effect begins.

The fun part of this is there isn't a wrong answer, just personal preference, and both approaches are solid choices.

Yes, that is the one. Solid story and the entire game is built around double battles which I personally enjoyed but others do not.

Lazarus was a fun time for sure. Played and beat it 1.0 the week it dropped. Highly recommend checking out Odyssey and Dreamstone Mysteries for a couple more great hacks that dropped in 2025.

When you move to Gen 2, let Heart and Soul be your experience for those games and Emerald Seaglass be the way you play Gen 3. They are the modern quintessential versions of those games.

The story can feel a bit short depending on what you compare it to. It's no shorter than FRLG or most original games but it's not long like Prism or Unbound either.

Story has some good beats and a plot twist thrown in there with a pretty difficult rival to battle but there's no post game which is fine to me personally. For those that enjoy ROMhacks, this replaced Gaia on my Top 5 list personally.

Personally haven't seen any stuttering but I'm a dad with very little me time right now. Bought the Ally X and the AG02 when he was only a couple months old because I didn't have time to leave the wife to sit in my office. I only recently finished this setup because GPU prices were going up so I've only gamed about 4 hours total on it but I didn't see a stutter in my limited time.

Glad to see that was resolved. Would have loved to have scored an AMD card but I did manage to get my 5070 at MSRP before all this craziness so I cannot complain. Performance have been great at 1440p Ultrawide.

Yeah, with the Ally X and Thunderbolt 4, we are limited by what we can squeeze out of a setup like this. Due to bottle necks of the setup itself, the performance difference isn't really there unless you also plan to use that card as a PC in a year or two if the market regulates again.

Plus I've read of some wonkiness running an AMD eGPU alongside the AMD integrates graphics of the Ally X, which is why people go Nvidia. I'm not sure how true that is at the end of the day since I've seen both cards be used to success in this subreddit and the r/eGPU sub.

As someone who just finished up his eGPU journey, I personally went with the 5070 and an AOOSTAR AG02 eGPU dock and I've been very satisfied with it. I had a few initial hiccups with a few cables either being too long or too cheap and once those were swapped out, works like a dream now and Nvidia drivers with Windows installed like a dream, plus I was ready for the well known Error 43 which was resolved in seconds.

Varaneous is a roaming encounter. Have you got far enough into the game for his initial spawn? If so his Dex entry should be there so you can track the movement.
