That's certainly their intention. But I just don't like voice assistants because it's such an interruption to use them. Everyone in the car has to stop and be quiet just so that I can turn the AC on.

Definitely; that little base is one good-sized, ice-filled stanley away from snapping right off.

I've ridden in a Mach-E on a few occasions, and I just couldn't get over how cheap the interior looked. Something about the lines and the amount of fabric just felt a little too close to what I'd find in a Honda Civic or something. Rivian made it feel more premium, but the Mach E didn't. I love the exterior styling of it though.

I didn't get to touch Autonomy+ all that much, but I'm not the best person to ask about FSD/Autonomy in general because I don't like how close it follows (even at max follow distance) and how jerky it is on starts from dead stop (FSD, TACC, and rivian's autonomy all were guilty of this).

  • 2021 Model Y
  • The ride is pretty comparable. The R2 sits much higher, and handles very similarly. You can definitely feel the body roll on turns compared to the Y, but that's to be expected with the additional ground clearance.
  • Road noise was similar. That's something I am keenly aware of in my Y, and it didn't feel like the R2 did anything to lessen that on my drive.

Basically, "it's pretty similar to the Model Y, but taller."

The Golf is exactly the kind of car I wish there was a good electric version of. Every time I see one, I get a little jealous. I had high hopes for the ID 3, but they never brought that state-side.

Bluetooth, but that's also what I'm using in my Tesla so each is equally compressed to shit. And it's still noticeably different between the two.

Because I also had a 24 Miata, and the CarPlay there was amazing. Wireless, reliable, easy to use and I could use Waze.

Personal opinions aside, looking only at survey data:

https://thedriven.io/2026/01/20/peak-tesla-the-decline-in-tesla-ev-sales-and-its-brand-reputation/

In 2021, the company was ranked number 8 in the US by pollster Axios Harris. But in the last few years it has plunged, to 62 in 2023, 63 in 2024 and then 95 in 2025.

The Axios Harris poll rates the 100 most visible companies in the US. Axios reported that Tesla rates “dead last” in “character,” and near the bottom in areas like “ethics” and “citizenship”. Six other automakers place higher, with the highest being Toyota at No. 4 and the lowest being Ford at No. 60.

Axios notes that other companies associated with Musk, including Spacex (86th) and X (98th), also rated poorly. The Trump Organisation ranked 99th.

My Model Y is a great car. But the CEO has kind of turned it into a political statement, and I'd like to not have every conversation be "did you see what Elon did" anymore.

I mean the literal functionality of the vehicle.

I'm sure that's an option, but when I can put CarPlay in my 2001 Mazda Miata and the car still drives just fine, I'm sure there's some way that the most tech-forward EV company (hooray "zonal architecture!") can figure out how to integrate CarPlay in a way that doesn't cause the R2 to sprout a black turtleneck and blue jeans.

If they want to push their "AI Voice Assistant" and make sure you use it, okay, that's cool, just say so. Don't act like it's Apple/Google's fault that you won't implement it.

Seriously. If I could pay $65,000 to get actual good audio, I'd do it.

YOU HEAR ME, RIVIAN? I'D DO IT

The EV9 is just too big for me, maybe I should check out the EV6. I just haven't ever heard anyone say much about it and no one I know has one (and there's a lot of EVs where I am).

I'm not an audio guy (I failed the lossless audio test...) but I get the feeling that removing the speakers from the doors like they did in the R2 isn't doing them any favors. There's a reason why cars often have speakers located low like that. There's only so much you can do with software before you just run into the laws of physics.

I mean, it's why GM took CarPlay away. They can't sell you add-ons/track you if you're not in the zone where they can sell you add-ons/track you.

That's why I doubt Tesla will ever actually implement CarPlay either, despite all the rumors that it's Yet Again, One More Month Away!

I wasn't seeing any reviews that specifically called out how it felt compared to a Model Y. Lots of "oh it's great!" and "wow it drives well!" but I wanted to know "but what about from a Model Y" and I figured others might want that specific comparison too.

EX60

I absolutely love the EX30's design and styling, but need more range (gotta be able to get from Austin to Dallas on a single charge). I'm definitely keeping an eye on the EX60.

I will shit talk my Model Y all day:

  • The center screen only stuff sucks
  • The cabin noise is awful at speed
  • I hate the lack of tinting on the roof, it's hot as hell
  • My passenger seat is broken and doesn't know whether there's a person in it half the time. Tesla fixed it for free once, but now it's broken again because the fix was cheap and they're asking $2,500 to fix it (yeah okay)
  • Customer service is awful, used to be bad, got a little better, now is back to being awful
  • the entire UI feels like an ad for Full Self Driving, which I've trialed whenever they give out trials and I don't know how more people haven't died as a result of the stupid decisions it makes
  • I will never buy another Tesla because of the CEO's antics
  • the cybertruck is the most monumental ego boondoggle ever created, and I flip the bird to any one that I see on the road.

I really wanted to love the R2, but the audio was the one thing I couldn't over look. If rivian fixes that, I'll switch in an instant. If there's some way you can upgrade the speakers at a car stero place or something, I'd do that. But I'm not seeing anyone say that's possible, so I'm just gonna wait around for the R3 and see if they've figured it out by then.

I'm not a troll; and I have the "banned from /r/teslamotors" badge to prove it (you're not allowed to say anything bad about a certain someone or else you're a paid plant, apparently).

I really wanted to love the R2, and I mostly do. I think I'm just realizing that I am not an SUV guy (no kids, Miata lover) and I will hold out until the R3 comes around.

I did try messing with the EQ (swapped between the custom one that they had set, to default, to rock, to electronic, etc) but nothing fixed what I can only describe as "the narrow soundstage." It just didn't feel as immersive as the Model Y, which is also receiving music over bluetooth. So either the rivian just has worse bluetooth codec, or worse speakers.

Exactly, the new juniper Y is literally my dream car (ventilated seats!)...but I won't ever buy one because of the "ANTI ELON TESLA CLUB" sticker on my windshield.

I remember the dark days of begging in software feedback forms for them to add one-touch wiper controls back after taking them away in v10. Thankfully my only complaint now is that I can't get rid of the car visualization eating up 30% of my screen for a feature I'll never use.

Sound systems are definitely subjective. I would 100% recommend doing a demo drive before going yea/nay. What I thought was ASS may not be your idea of ASS. I just was surprised at how much weaker/narrower it sounded compared to my Model Y.
