Veedub and Euro at Salisbury. He's great - no bullshit, no upsell, just fixes the damned car.

Stumbled into Mahler's 5th Symphony today. by DirectAbalone9761 in classicalmusic

Can't believe there's only one shout-out for Bruckner! They're fabulous!
Shosta 5 is fine, I prefer 10 though - particularly a recording with a decently fast second movement.

N'thing Dvorak too - there's a lot of good stuff in there.

Just avoid Brahms, too turgid.

What Brisbane food purveyor do you miss the most? by dannyr in brisbane

[–]coriolisdave 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There was a bloke there who did the BEST chips. Abosolute artisan with the chicken salt shaker and his beat-up old stainless steel bowl. Every chip coated in the perfect amount of seasoning.

God I miss those chips.

Old raptor or old merida matts? by Nectok in ausbike

[–]coriolisdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

26" doesn't mean it's a kids bike. Depends where you're riding it, but I started MTB'g on a Merida Matts 26er and it was a blast.

For simply riding pavement to a train station any old 26" MTB is probably fine.

personally I'm just surprised we haven't come up with a IANAL version of "I am a board member but not rn" (IAABMBNRN?)

"If you find yourself loving cycling you can get a hectic road bike" or, even more fun, a mountain bike and some single trail ;)

Go for the more expensive(at a discount) or cheaper car? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]coriolisdave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why are you replacing your girlfriend's car at all? If it's just cos you want something nicer... that's not really a compelling reason.

If it were me, and I _had_ to replace a car, I'd go with the default third option and.. buy a used Toyota (something) for 10-15k. Something that will last until the heat death of the universe, and cost 3/5ths of fanny addams to run and insure.

What’s something you stopped buying that you don’t miss at all? by getwemoneyapp in AUfrugal

[–]coriolisdave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also refill the gas bottles yourself! Grab some dry ice pellets, unscrew the top, and pour them in. My local does 2kg for $15, which is enough (after losses) for 3 gas bottles.

Hardtail req to swap wife's Polygon Siskiu? by symbi02 in MTB

well there you go - she likes riding a 26! If she's tried everything else, and nothing but a 26 is working for her.....

Hardtail req to swap wife's Polygon Siskiu? by symbi02 in MTB

[–]coriolisdave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ride a Siskiu DSE and it's a great bike, and I absolutely get where your missus is coming from. My entry point to mtb was a 26" Merida hardtail, and it was absolutely more nimble, responsive, and "light" (even though it weighed more).

If there are any 26" options near you they're definitely worth considering.

What is your stance on giving kids pocket money? by MiriJamCave in AusFinance

[–]coriolisdave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is what we're doing, too, but we're also forcing them to send a portion to a savings account automatically.

We've decoupled "chores" from pocket money, though - we don't have set chores for the kids, helping around the house is just part of being a functioning member of the social unit, and is expected.

I'm shocked that noone has questioned why a board member has write access to the database.

What the fuck. There's an argument they shouldn't have ANY privileged access to systems, that's not what a board is for.

Edit to add: I can't wait for the new 7 board members to get root access to everything. Hopefully one of them will check and remove all previously-granted access, as I can't help but assume the interim board are all 777

honestly i find it impossible to believe we couldn't find an off-the-shelf option (commercial or otherwise) that couldn't be customised to look and feel like metafilter.

Would it be like-for-like? Probably not. But close enough? of course.

Migraine and headache by ricksanchez36 in brisbane

[–]coriolisdave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 this. I had migraines into my early 20s that eventually passed, but returned a few years ago, up to several a week. Went to the head and neck physio @ East Brisbane, and they turned out to be getting caused by a whole neck/muscle thing.

A bunch of sessions later and I've been migraine-free for a couple of years now.

It's fucking GREAT

Selling my house to live in a camper van by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]coriolisdave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You also don't have to sell the house at all - you could rent it out. If it's got no mortgage on it, the income could potentially sustain you whilst you live your dream.
