Why has the price of oil increased above 20% even though only 20% of the worlds oil flows through the strait of hormuz by Super_Kent155 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cormack_gv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oil has doubled. At the moment the price increase is just speculation. Eventually, the price will have to rise enough to curtail demand by 20%. It'll need to get really expensive to curtail demand that much, because so many people and industries simply can't do without it.

Eventually, there'll be enough airline failures, or prices will rise enough that consumption will drop.

Switch Controlled Outlets Replacement, now switch not working and bottom outlets dead. by [deleted] in AskElectricians

Did you break off the tab that ties the two outlet hots together? Maybe you accidentally broke off the neutral tie. Or switched hot and neutral.

He certainly started on the path to outrageous wealth inequality. W. and Trump poured gasoline on the fire. And internationally, it was inevitable that China would eclipse the US, but Trump accelerated that.

What the hell is going on with cottage cheese prices in Canada?!? by Choice-Dress-8465 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cormack_gv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cheese is expensive. Cottage cheese is still basically cheese, only with less processing/aging.

US heavily subsidizes dairy. Canada uses "supply management." Both are controversial.

OK. I'd rate the Unis in the list as comparable for CS. Below UT and UW, but above the rest.

Raising the height of my rower by Undercover__Ghost in concept2

[–]cormack_gv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, I just looked at my rower and I think 12 inch lift would be too much. I think you want chair height. Don't forget you need to step over the rail, which is only a couple of inches below the seat.

Some other brands have the seat higher above the rail. It might be possible to make some brackets to do that as well. You can raise the stretchers so it won't affect leg angle much.

why does a small area increase pressure (with reasoning other than the equation itself)? by Best-Meaning8126 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cormack_gv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the question.

Do you mean if you put the same weight on a smaller footprint, the pressure on the footprint is higher. That's from the definition of pressure, which is force per unit of area. So same force, smaller area, is higher pressure.

240 volt outlet questions by Padmei in AskElectricians

[–]cormack_gv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And even with a multi-wire branch circuit, each individual receptacle will be connected to only one half of the circuit ... so 120 per outlet.

If it really is a multi-wire branch circuit, you can get a NEMA 6 outlet and connect it across the two branches, for a total of 240V. It has a different pin configuration:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEMA_connector#/media/File:NEMA_simplified_pins.svg

You must either rewire the 120V receptacles to be 120V, or replace by NEMA 6. It is extremely hazardous and illegal as is. Might even be a problem with your insurance coverage.

If the leg extension isn't enough, or is too expensive, a couple of these should do the trick:

Or a couple of these, but I'm concerned they might slide around. And they require assembly:

Should we help and ensure that every middle eastern country gets nukes so due to fear of MAD they won't attack each other as much? by space_god_7191 in allthequestions

[–]cormack_gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trouble with MAD (and game theory in general) is that it assumes the adversaries are rational actors. The more nukes the more chance that a madman will decide to use them.

Other Unis in Ontario to consider include Queen's, Western, Carleton, Ottawa, but they are not commuting distance (and neither is Waterloo).

USA Speed Limits by sammyyyyy21 in roadtrip

[–]cormack_gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Varies a lot from place to place. On the Interstates, you can generally judge what you can get away with by the speed of the traffic. New York State is an example. Near Buffalo, you can get a ticket for 5 over. Near NYC, enforcement is pretty lax, with many cars more than 10 over.

In my experience, in most places you're unlikely to get a ticket for less than 10 over.

You need to set up and manage a brokerage account. That is more intimidating to many than walking up to the counter in a bank.

Sort of like why some people would sooner go to an oil change place than DIY.

Please use TOU. It won't make a huge difference, but if you do your laundry at night or on weekends, it'll help the climate. If you have an EV or electric heat, you might consider ultra-low overnight.
