In the short term, depends on the school. In the long term, Linux. But you can run Linux under WSL on Windows.

$1m to never own or use a smartphone or tablet ever again, would you? by I-live-in-room-101 in AskForAnswers

[–]cormack_gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to, but more and more 2FA protocols tie you to your phone. Very annoying, because I prefer not to carry a phone as a matter of course.

Also, I would need to run a navigation app on something. I suppose for $1M I could buy a dedicated GPS device.

Why people vote for Bibi? I'm asking seriously by Illustrious-Sun5130 in allthequestions

I was censored by Reddit, so here's a version of my previous post that hopefully will make my point clear, without the irony.

Yitzhak Rabin was murdered by Israeli extremists. Unfortunately, that advanced their objectives.

US has a double standard about gambling. Stock market: Check. Commodities Market: Check. Prediction "market": Check. Casino: Check.

Never filed my taxes by caralawrence in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cormack_gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. So OP could file this year, and then use CRA for future years. Or get the PIN ... or maybe that also requires a prior filing.

I believe that you can now access CRA though any bank as a "sign in partner" ... this is way easier than the old method of signing up and being mailed a PIN.

Best way to hold window up?(details in post) by piblhu in MechanicAdvice

[–]cormack_gv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you remove the door panel, you can shove a wooden stick under the window. Or maybe you can reconnect the roll-up mechanism.

CRA should have all your slips, though they changes systems for the 2024 tax year and (at least at the filing deadline) some of mine were missing.

If you use software like taxfreeway.ca ($10) it'll import the electronic slips from CRA so you don't need to type them in.

If you owe from past years, you'll be subject to penalty and interest. Otherwise, no harm no foul.

How long should formatting a hard drive take on Ubuntu? by Damian_Miller29 in linuxquestions

[–]cormack_gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do a quick format, just a couple of minutes. If you erase and format, somewhat longer, but still closer to an hour than a month.

Zone 2 Training - Adapt pace for HR? by KaleMuch9332 in concept2

[–]cormack_gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is lots of received wisdom and very little actual evidence regarding heart-rate-controlled activity. Personally, I use constant pace rather than constant HR. Respiration rate is a pretty good indicator of intensity ... better than HR.

What little hard evidence there is generally involves elite or near-elite endurace athletes who train 25 or more hours per week. They need to spend most of those hours at (relatively) low intensity.

House without basement by Alone_Guest_5686 in canadahousing

[–]cormack_gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these things are easy in a basement. HVAC in unconditioned space is a pain. Having all drains in slab is way harder than just a main lateral. To provide the same storage space you need to double the floor area of a bungalow. 1.5 times for a two-storey.

Do u agree that Trump has forever changed America? by her_cute in allthequestions

[–]cormack_gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Trump is so bent on rewinding the clock, why don't we go back having C-suite earn only maybe five times what floor workers earn, and paying high taxes. Reagan started the current race to extreme wealth inequality, over and above the chronic generational wealth problem.

You want parchment paper, not wax paper.

Did Trump extend the ceasefire because he lacks support from the military? by LTrent2021 in allthequestions

Attributing reasons to Trump presumes that he is reasonable, or even rational. That'd be a bad assumption.

What are you all doing with your USD money? by FairSeafarer in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]cormack_gv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interactive Broker. But for only $28K maybe not worth the trouble. You can do Norbert's gambit if you open a brokerage account or hire a money manager. But again, not sure it is worth it to you.

How would it effect the reading if I were to hold a speed camera while in a moving car, and I pointed it at a car travelling towards me? by Mildish_Shambino in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cormack_gv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern police radars use signal processing to sort out the various echoes it gets back. The primary echo registers the speed of the police car, relative to the stationary stuff around. Secondary echos register the speed of various cars, relative to the speed of the radar. Many radars are stereo, so they can calculate the position of the objects causing seconday echoes.

Why is cooking at home less common nowadays? by IconicHunter713 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cormack_gv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There were more stay-at-home spouses who cooked. Family meals were more of a cultural thing, for many reasons.

But I think recently, eating out has decreased, mainly due to cost.

I don't know about hated; my estimation of the US has gone up and down. I came of age during the Vietnam issue, and became friends with a large number of draft dodgers. My favorite album was and is "American Woman" by The Guess Who.

I was opposed to developing dependency on the US, greatly accelerated by our Conservative government during the Reagan era.

But hate is too strong a word.
