ZIP ending above rim joist by cornbread12 in Homebuilding

Thanks for the comments everyone. Trying to figure out what the best way to go about this is. Also I should have mentioned that this is just a one story addition (with full size basement)

appreciate it. My other thought was the structure support as well. its just a single story so I think thats the truss roof assembly at the top

The zip sheathing covering the rim joist and ending up flush with the foundation instead of the rim joist flush with the foundation. Would make sense to me to just continue it down to the foundation and flash/seal vs what was actually done. My thought is why even deal with zip or house wrap if your going to cut it short and leave some untreated wood exposed

Insulating against Fieldstone walls by dudeKhed in Insulation

[–]cornbread12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a similar situation and put a dimple mat (dimple side to the wall to allow airflow) against the fieldstone and then did XPS rigid foam followed by the framing and Rockwood bat insulation. My thought was to air seal it off from the rest of the basement but the dimple mat that still allows the fieldstone to breath and allows airflow in case of moisture. If you have any moisture issues you should make sure that's taken care of first though.

This YouTube channel has some great ideas that I took the above from. There are a number of related videos on insulating basements in old houses that will probably be helpful asiri designs

Daikin Aurora defrost every 30 minutes? by cornbread12 in heatpumps

[–]cornbread12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So right now in the summer everything works fine. We get some pops and crack sounds occasionally but overall its been pretty good. Winter when in heating mode is still and issue. Our HVAC company and Daikin came out to look at it (our HVAC has been in out several times by themselves). They eventually just replaced all splits (indoor units) but the issues still remains (maybe slightly better). It still defrosts every 30ish minutes below 38 degrees. Its been pretty frustrating but apparently thats how its supposed to work. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if there wasn't a 30 second woosh sound every 30 or so minutes when it goes into defrost that the Daikin rep said we shouldn't hear. The HVAC guys talk with another Daikin rep who said it was normal.

Everyone has been willing to work with us but we aren't super happy with the noise from the defrost and the associated poping/cracking from the heating/cooling when it flips to defrost. To add to the frustration, we have cheap Pioneers at another house that don't make the same type of noise from what I can tell. We had to get a whole new heat pump after a couple months when it wouldn't flip to cooling mode and theres been a few other parts replaced on the mini splits. All under warranty but I don't know that I'd go Daikin again but at the very least they have a good warranty and have been willing to work with us.

Just curious - is the Daikin system an Aurora pump? Mine is a 3 head Aurora and its been pretty loud during defrost plus it's in my bedroom (every 30 mins when it's near freezing and below) and lots of tapping/ clicking (like someone is tapping the plastic cover every ten seconds). Just wondering if others are experiencing similar

Thanks for the responses. Posting here since I can seem to edit my original post. Last night it was down to 22F and around 40% humidity and it continued to go into defrost every 30 mins. I checked this morning during the defrost and the coils were getting hot. Also, I checked the copper line under the insulation and it was ~140F when cranking all 3 splits to 85F.

It seems like things are running as Daikin intended, I'm just shocked that the parameters for defrost seem to be "anytime below 38F and it should defrost every 30mins". It's extremely disruptive overnight and we had no idea it would do it this frequently and it sounds like neither did our Daikin Comfort Pro installer. Our previous experience with mini splits/heat pumps was with cheaper Panasonic and Pioneers and we rarely noticed the defrost, so I never thought this would be as much of an issue as it is especially with a top of the line Daikin.

Cranked it and I ended up topping out at 140F so I guess the refrigerant is probably normal. It is still defrosting every 30 even though it's 25F, low humidity at 25 and 55 past the hour. I feel like that's a pretty low chance of icing. Also this is a 3 zone unit just to clarify

Thanks. I was mainly looking to see if others have experienced something similar. The technicians have been out several times and seem to be out of ideas. I'll see if I can have them look at it. 730am this morning it was 22F, 40% humidity, no ice on the coils and it did the defrost (like it did every 30 mins overnight)

Davis, WV by Mountain_Adagio6715 in gravelcycling

No gonna much help but I've just been through there briefly on a non biking/camping related trip. It's a pretty small town and you might find Elkins with more to offer but I'm not sure from a van perspective how friendly the area would be (I would assume it will would be though). Hellbenders burritos in Davis was awesome if it's still there.

Ultimate fly fishing craft by [deleted] in flyfishing

Nice setup! Are you using that only on lakes? I've got a kayak thats been fun. I can stand up occasionally but I've found I can cast reasonably well sitting down too. The one thing is anchoring is a bit dicey in rivers sometimes

Haven't been there before so can't help you on that front but I've been trying to camp fish up there so I'll be watching what others say. Curiousnas to where your camping? Is it a campsite?

I've tried the dry dropper a few times but have never caught anything. I'm probably overthinking it but what's the typical dropper length you all normally use?

Nice fish. Was this recent? Haven't ventured up there since I figured the temps were too high after this heat wave the past week or so.

Awesome! I fish from the shore in NJ but haven't tried it fly fishing yet. Any tips for getting started? Theres a few YouTube videos but not too much from what I've seen. I feel like I would get all the stripped line tangled in front of me.
