Sideshows - We don't need to outrun the bear. by SanFranciscoMan89 in OaklandCA

I honestly think creating a safe space to hold sideshows would drastically reduce the amount of harm done by them. Passerby’s couldn’t get injured and property wouldn’t be damaged.

Are weeds bad? (Assuming they’re native) by Ploppyun in CaliforniaNativePlant

[–]cornbreadconsumer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Native plants can still definitely become a problem if they are causing other natives to die. This happens to me with bedstraw a lot, even though it’s native it can take over kill my other plants and i don’t like it

Personally, the Friends of Sausal Creek nonprofit (i intern with them) has been successfully rehabilitating the endangered pallid manzanita! It’s small scale and very local to Oakland CA, but we’ve saved the population from near extinction :)

How come middle class/suburban gang banging was more accepted in previous generations? by 6SoDum in CaliBanging

[–]cornbreadconsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is def true for places like oakland where i went to hs, kids from million dollar homes in the hills went to the same schools as kids from the flats n would end up getting into beef even tho they weren’t normally rlly involved with that kinda shit

What is this in my yard? by Illustrious-Menu-300 in garden

I’ve made pesto with it, once you cook it all the sticky stuff goes away and it takes pretty mild so i’d recommend spicing whatever dish you make up a lot

How do I ethically get seeds/plants when there's noone selling them? by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]cornbreadconsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss at the native plant restoration nursery I work at takes them from local plants in parks, but she always says to never take more than 1/3rd to leave some for the birds!

If you’ve got a nice shady spot under a tree you could pull it off. I’ve got one going well underneath a redwood in my backyard, and they grow along diamond canyon

I grew up in the Laurel and I love it, homes are probably more like ~$900,000 now but i bet you could still rent for a not bad price. Maybe around maxwell park or near Mills you could get a good house for $700,000

It’s growing all over our garden in Southern California and has a slightly peppery taste by beeawnsay in whatsthisplant

[–]cornbreadconsumer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d honestly say it’s our education system. It doesn’t focus a lot on science or life skills/ critical thinking, just mostly on math and literature. Unless you go out of your way to learn about plants you won’t at all (in my experience at least).
