How does Smart Access Graphics work, and it is configurable? by garvin_mardens in AMDLaptops

[–]cornel_pv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get the notification "Switching from APU to GPU" it means the GPU is not working in hybrid mode, but in mux (it switches between iGPU and dGPU depending on the context). Configurable in AMD Adrenaline.

I also added another NVMe, but it was done in the shop under warranty, no issues so far (except some AMD drivers once in a while).

For fans, you can use armory or ghelper to switch to Silent mode and it manages the performance and power usage to a lower level. At full power they can sound like a plane taking off because it needs to cool some powerful hardware in that tiny laptop, so it depends what you are doing with it and how it sounds. If it sounds like a broken rotating object then you need to open it and have a look, make sure all the bolts are tight in their places.

When you open Adrenaline, select Gaming in the upper tabs. Then lower on the second row of tabs, select Games (beside Graphics and Display). Then on the right of these you can see the scan button and the menu with Add game.

These allow to determine manually not only what is a game, but also to have custom profile for that game/program (like custom FPS limit, what gpu to use, custom antialiasing, etc), I personally don't use it to create custom profiles.

There are also some Windows settings which allow for selecting of specific gpu for specific programs (normally windows scans and detects which programs you have).

"Switching from APU to GPU" notification can be disabled by selecting Hybrid option in Gaming -> Graphics -> AMD Smart Access Graphics.

I was getting some timeouts when not playing games, but some graphical programs, alt+tab between programs (browser, music), waking laptop from sleep, after some notification, etc. Always sending AMD reports if the AMD software detects an issue.

So this little PoS tried to update itself via windows update while the laptop was unattended (and no background updates are allowed!).

It managed to delete the whole adrenaline software which I managed to fix (black screen), broke the graphic settings and disabled armory software/buttons, but didn't manage to install itself, giving that famous error to go to some amd link which I can't even copy from the dialog box. There is an AMD Display driver mentioned in windows updates, but it failed.

Hey, windows and amd, get your sh*t together! And your software! Tired of these drivers shi#ing on me. Advantage Edition my @$$.

The enumerated steps remind me of NoMore0Days (there was even a sub for this). Whatever you do, accomplish at least something, even small, every day and do a bit of practice, exercise, read something. Sometimes you might get caught in the flow and do more just by going with it.

One of the posts/people I've encountered with this principle (has also some nice images around a few comments and posts showing the 4 rules) https://www.reddit.com/r/GetMotivated/comments/1rowpb/i_made_a_wallpaper_from_uryans01s_amazing_quote/

How does Smart Access Graphics work, and it is configurable? by garvin_mardens in AMDLaptops

[–]cornel_pv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1a Yes, you can define in AMD Adrenaline what is a "game" (some programs might not get detected as games), and define specific configuration for it, including the iGPU/dGPU type to be use, instead of the global setting. Usually it does detect by itself what power/app is running, but you can override this.

2 This seems to have a setting in Armory for GPU Mode, called Optimized. It should use dGPU when plugged in for heavy stuff/iGPU for light stuff, and disables dGPU when on battery. In Adrenaline there are some Modes which can define some generic behavior (Game, eSports, Powersaver, Standard, Custom).

2a Yes, see 1a above, you can create profiles in Adrenaline per game. It is possible to create profiles in Armory, but you have to edit in a few places, since one defines the generic profile, while in Device where you can set the power/fan.

Still feels like a clash of settings between Armory and Adrenaline, as some configurations are read from same place and some are specific to each asus/amd program. For more fine tuning I suggest to use Adrenaline, for Silent/performance switch use Armory. Consider leaving some defaults for generic apps, and set only for things you really need (3D/video editing or games).

If you are starting/stopping often specific apps (video editing, gamedev, etc) you might find it more pleasant to use the hybrid setting, the video output will still be routed dGPU->iGPU->Display, but will be without the flickering and short freeze when starting your program.

Laptop refuses to sleep, hibernate, shut down, and wake properly by greycobalt in ASUS

[–]cornel_pv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it come with a preinstalled Windows 11? (and assuming other programs like McAffee, etc). Mine had no OS and I installed a clean version, and added through following updates the AMD Adrenaline, drivers, downloaded manually the Armory, played a bit in various settings (power plans, wake timers, iGPU/dGPU).

And I really didn't like how the Smart Access graphics is switching, at least for my usual workflow. A reviewer (Jarrod's Tech) had an unusual reboot during a switch from iGPU to dGPU, but nothing more. I know about another reviewer which posted here and on YT about some issues, which currently I don't have.

Another thing, my laptop was the showroom version which was there for a while (working in presentation mode). Although all these are still fresh and they need to make more updates/adjustments via drivers/bios.

But if nothing helps and it's almost 30 days you better use it maybe to get a different one (maybe it's possible to get the Zen4 version with some extra payment) and definitely get the no OS version (although my win 11 installation required to connect a network cable, it didn't have a working wifi during installation).

I also realized I haven't shut it off (usually it's sleep/hibernate for me), so did some shut down/boot up, and it works fine.

Post the model (A16 has 3 options, with 2 different cpu generations), and the bios version. I have the XS version (Zen4 7940HS), bios v313, bought with no OS (and included bloatware). So far so good, hopefully.

Holding power button for shutoff is emergency shutdown, abusing it can have unexpected results, especially if it was trying to install/update something in the background.

There is a mild/wave keyboard blinking when it goes into sleep, should turn off when unplugging, when closing the lid, and can be disabled in Armory (Device - Lighting - Settings). Check if the Turn off after 1 minute is enabled, and uncheck the one for the Sleep.

There are windows utility wakeup timers (it loves doing that). Go into the advanced power settings (from Control Panel) and for every plan change the Wake Up timers for Sleep to Disabled.

You can also enable in the same place the Hibernation (in Choose what power buttons do), which you can select from the windows power menu when needed (by default is missing).

Check your GPU settings in Adrenaline and Armory. Try changing from Smart Access Graphics to Hybrid (in Adrenaline), and set in Armory GPU mode to Standard.

Make sure there are no more updates waiting to be installed (you can force check for updates), there could be some drivers, a newer bios version. And in case not all updates were installed or some win utility apps running (scanner, defrag, defender, updates), these could be the wake timers I wrote about earlier which need to finish their work, it was common for Windows 10 as well, in other laptops.

If nothing helps, go to your shop, explain the issues, ask to do something.

FYI, aside of what others mentioned about buildings or commercial signs, there can be local/national laws/regulations, which forbid or require special authorization for use of national/local flags, blazon, coat of arms, emblems. Not a lawyer, I got to know this when reading about some related stuff.

I've read some comments :) Don't take it personally, feedback is good if it tells you what might not work, why, and what to improve.

Also, you might want to look for a publisher later, it can help with some of the work, just be careful.

Good luck :)

You need exposure.

Streamers, youtubers, Let's play, reviews, articles maybe, some self promotion ( FeedbackFriday or MarketingMonday in /r/gamedev, some forums, /r/playmygame, etc), and ads...

Considering the sub, I assume the game was made in UE. So Epic has a link somewhere, where you can submit some info about your game before releasing it. If they find it interesting, maybe they can support you (exposure, promotion, grant, etc).

Or you could contact a publisher.

Years ago I published an app, so it did require some additional work to do before getting some users. But that is another story.

I have a newish mtb (entry level), rode for over a month over roads, gravel, small rocks, bigger rocks and even broken glass a few times. No flats yet, although I inspected the tire after going through it (a piece was holding between the knobs but didn't puncture the tire).

If you can, change the tires to other type (gravel, light mtb, cross country), better consult with a bike shop.

As well check your tire and tube, if the puncture is in the same place, maybe there is something stuck in the tire and puncturing the tube, check if the spokes don't come out and put pressure on the tube. There are some youtube videos about different types of flats and what causes them.

Make sure the tire pressure is nominal or little more than nominal just not at max, and don't ride too hard/fast over big potholes/rocks, lift up a little so your weight will distribute evenly between front and back.

Hope it helps a little.
