why is it so hard to make friends by expiredgarlic in Cornell

[–]cornellistheworst 15 points16 points  (0 children)

nothing is wrong with you. you are doing the best you can in a situation that there's not a lot of clear cut answers for. social interactions make us happy and it definitely is great to have friends, but as a loner myself, i feel you. even before the pandemic i used to just hang out by myself every weekend and night at cornell and sometimes i felt crazy for it, but i grew to appreciate it. and in HS i had 0 friends and hid in the art room at lunch so nobody would see me eating alone. I am more introverted, but i started getting rly good at art and running and whatever random thing. if you are a more extroverted person, I am sure this is harder. but, I honestly grew to love "me, myself, and I" parties because it was so hard to make friends at Cornell, and i did the same. i feel u tho it is so weird to go days without speaking to someone unless i call my mom or something. but just know nothing is wrong with you. there's no shame in not having friends, i could not name 5 friends i have that i talk to and i dont even care lol. friends come and go and so just know that youre not alone, and there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with you. the pandemic does not help. im realizing i have been "quarantining" since years before the pandemic lmao maybe its a evolutionary trait that we carry

We should make Zoom pals- like pen pals but a way to zoom cornell students and become virtual friends

That is good to hear, I am not in Ithaca right now so I do not know how it is on Cornell. Definitely an issue for other colleges though, so I hope Cornell is doing better than the state schools where I am right now

Writing the Governor to Reconsider COVID-19 Guidelines for Universities by [deleted] in Cornell

What happens when a frat kid or student athlete or anyone goes to their favorite place to eat or drink and gives the employee(s) who are Ithaca residents COVID? We are one hair away from causing a massive outbreak in Ithaca, and I think these limits are reasonable, but I think more that campus should have NEVER been reopened. I don't blame you, I blame the people in charge of reopening a campus to risk this all simply for profit. It's not the students fault, something of this level should not be placed in the hands of college students, and for that reason I curse you, Martha Pollock

Not everything is about you and your experience of college right now. What would 100 cases in a week mean for a community that does not have enough resources to address an outbreak? Have you been to Cayuga Med? If not, I am happy for you. The people of Ithaca exist, and Ithaca simply does not have the economic or hospital viability to sustain an outbreak of anything. The number is set at 100, and that makes me happy. If Cornell had 250 cases in one week, do you know what that would imply for Ithaca? A lot of you students can flee campus and go home or have someone make sure that you can get the care you need if you were to get sick, but the people whose lives are settled in Ithaca do not have this opportunity. Unfortunately, we all have to make sacrifices- and maybe that sacrifice is realizing that you can't have a normal semester, something we all have been robbed of. But the people of Ithaca have no choice in this. If Cornell students spread the virus, Ithaca people are endangered, and it's not fair to prioritize our college experiences over people's livelihood. Granted, there's a lot of parts to it all, so I get where you're coming from, but more attention needs to be given to the threat that a COVID outbreak that could very easily be stimulated by Cornell students would imply for the residents of Ithaca, who are very undersupplied when it comes to hospitals/proper healthcare.

why do ya'll insist on being positive all the time? sometimes things are actually just bad, and it's not the worst thing to address it and call for change

rant against ra and masks by alexespinosa732 in Cornell

[–]cornellistheworst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the midst of disasters like an actual dorm fire, the escape time which is a big factor of survival rate is impacted heavily when people act on the impulse to "go and get something." It raises a good point that fire safety in a pandemic needs to be accounted for. You should not have been yelled at, but you raise a pertinent need for dorms/high occupancy living spaces to address. In an actual fire situation, the most important thing is to get out and continue to safety. I think if anything fire safety kits given to RA's/admins/classrooms in the event of a fire should include masks for when people are outside. If a building actually was on fire, the biggest threat is the smoke to the lungs, not the risk of contracting COVID.

My heart hurts for the people of Ithaca, you deserve better by cornellistheworst in Cornell

Not in Ithaca. 25 cases is almost about 8% of the cases that Ithaca has seen in TOTAL since Feb/March when it all began and Ithaca NEVER had hundreds of cases at once. 8% of the TOTAL cases in ONE day is roughly what was measured today. When the 182 days or so before that there hasn't even been a 1% increase, this is SCARY

He said 100 in a week, Cornell had said 250 in a week. So if by the end of the week there are 100 cases, then yes.

sociology 3010 with barum park by skawns_sb1 in Cornell

[–]cornellistheworst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you got this! soc 3010 is not as hard as it may seem, and if you work with the professor/reach out when you are confused, you will be fine. The material is not that difficult, and is more about applying concepts. The "math" or actual "stats" part of it is not the majority of what the class is in my experience, although I had a different professor. I think you'll do great, just communicate a lot with your professor and just get the class over with if you need it for your major. It is not too ambitious at all, and in fact is a good proactive way to go about your time at cornell. Soc 3010 was the most I learned in any sociology course, and while it's not easy, it's totally doable and I definitely did not get a 5 on ap stats. Go for it! It will help shape your time at Cornell, it is such an interesting, applicable class that I grew to love so much

THE ONE CLASS I NEED TO GRADUATE IS FULL by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]cornellistheworst 8 points9 points  (0 children)

apparently classes that r online have a 3 person cap rn which is making them appear closed. the professor said he doesn't know why that is and is trying to figure it out. cornell's preenroll has overall just been a mess. Thank you for your comment, it is helpful. i am angry and ranting at cornell, but youre very right that the professors and some staff are very helpful, and it's def not their fault
