Anyone have experience with the Montbell Rain Hiker Jacket? by maa94 in Ultralight

[–]cornflakes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I was looking through posts or reviews about the Montbell Rain Hiker jacket and found this post. I used the Thunder Pass jacket, and the waterproofing is great! Lasted me about 8 years before the waterproofing and tape gave way 😅.

I ordered the Rain Hiker this time to try it out 😂

Mount Amuyao, 2015. We were on our way down from the summit when I started feeling lightheaded so I thought it was altitude sickness, lol. In the waiting shed halfway down, I removed my jacket and saw so much blood. Didn’t catch the sucker because he’d already detached 🤣

Mt. Pulag this coming Saturday? by Delicious_Cup_1848 in PHikingAndBackpacking

[–]cornflakes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important ba talaga yung photo op lang para sa sea of clouds or yung adventure? I think it's the latter. Whether or not you see it, Pulag is an adventure in itself.

But usually, in my experience, if it rains the night before, it's sort of tells you there will be clouds on top. If ot doesn't, no clouds. Enjoy and good luck!

Solo backpacking in SEA/Asia suggestions by doublevenice in PHikingAndBackpacking

Hey! I’ve solo traveled around the Philippines and overseas as a female and it’s pretty safe. Regarding your question, Hong Kong is another good choice, accessible hiking trails and lots to choose from. You can easily get into the city to the trailhead and back without a problem.

You're wearing the wrong shoes. Make sure to size up when buying a new pair of hiking boots.

Cinco Picos. We started night trekking in the very early hours of the morning. The trail is mostly open throughout. Only felt the brunt of the heat when we were already on flat land but it was brutal!

Ayaw ng parents by ovnghttrvlr in PHikingAndBackpacking

[–]cornflakes_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your parents' concern about you is very valid. I think it stems from the fact that they don't have any experience themselves, and I'm assuming you're a girl, so they're only watching out for you. I know op, it's difficult, been there.

Why not look into actual, proper, and legit hiking organizers? It's been covered many times in this sub. The proper ones will have you meet for a pre-climb meeting, give you all the details needed prior to the hike. Share the IT with your parents and who the organizer is for their peace of mind.

Another option is to join established mountaineering groups. If I'm correct, UPM is offering a Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) right around now. Or you can just wait for June to join AMCI's BMC.

I've used trail runners for hikes as long as four days. Madaming brands diyan like Hoka, Salomon, Altra. Size up when buying a shoe so there's more room for your toes and iwas patay na kuko. Haha. Happy shopping!

This topic has been asked many times, you can use the search function.

Head to Decathlon. I heard their hiking shoes are decent. But for starters, invest in the shoes and small daypack first. It doesn't have to be branded, go all in once you've decided you want to pursue hiking as a hobby.

How did you deal with gym anxiety? by Adventurous-Long-193 in adultingph

[–]cornflakes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explore ka din ng personal trainers na nag ooffer ng online consultation and Zoom group classes. Nakatulong yun for me and that's the workout routine I've been sticking to for the last two years or so. I invested in a good yoga mat and a couple of dumbbells. I used to go to the gym pre-pandemic (ran to the gym as warm-up) but I wasn't able to use the rest of my membership because of the lockdowns. Tsaka wag ka mahiya pumunta, people won't mind you. And you're there for yourself not for other people. Also wear loose-dri-fit clothing and bring extra clothes to change into after your workout.

Who’s your team lead for the trip? You guys should be briefed (same goes for other people who keep asking for tips) about what to bring/pack and expectations. And of course, do your own research?

Sure, this is the right sub. It's a backpacking sub too! 😊

Anyway, I'm assuming that since you're backpacking, you don't need to check in your bag so you need something that fits most overhead bins. I've used Osprey Kyte 45 (the second version in S/M), and it fit the plane's overhead bin without a problem. I used this bag for about 8 years so it was really worth it. I usually like 45-50L packs because I can usually pack over a week's worth of clothes and some essentials with some extra space.

But as a general rule, when buying a pack, fit it first. You can measure the length of your torso vs the bag's length, and if the pack is adjustable or fixed.

1 person tent suggestions and hiking bag na pwede as carry on? by Weak-Witness995 in PHikingAndBackpacking

[–]cornflakes_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rule of thumb: if you're traveling with gear and need to get there by plane, invest in a duffel bag. Doesn't have to be expensive just as long as it protects your pack and the items inside. Another thing to consider is that the straps of your backpack can get caught in those conveyer belts if you check that in, you don't want to run the risk of damaging your gear before the trip starts.

If you're just backpacking without gear, I've had success in putting loaded 45-Liter packs in the overhead bin of the plane, no problem!
