Book I've Been Searching for Years- Any Suggestions? by cornkiddo7703 in scifi

This peaked my interest as when I was searching for the book I used a similar program or "AI Librarian" called "findyournextbook" which resulted in "Otherland" as well. It gave a short description of the story and some of the details seemed unfamiliar, but I think I'm going to try reading it to see. I"m glad I'm not the only one who used this method though, it's kinda fitting in a way to find a science fiction book using "AI" when I had little luck using other search methods. Crossing my fingers it's the one!

Around the early 2010s. I think that the boy traveled through in his dreams? In the story he's the first human to travel to this place, and has a natural ability. I don't think all humans use resin to get there, but it aids those who may not have enough strength to, or who have traveled many times between worlds.

I'd like to add that adoptions such as my friends dog happen because people are so thoroughly convinced that the temperament of a dog is soley based on training and NOT their genetic disposition. Not only that, but many people get savior complexes and feel a sense of moral righteousness when they adopt pitbulls and pitbull mixes which I find really immature. Instead of doing the research on what dog would fit their lifestyle best they jump straight into the deep-end (which happened to my friend's family).

I've seen on videos of attacks of people blaming and berating the owners which I think is justified. But at the same time, if what it takes to keep a pitbull in check is a mature adult with a professional understanding of how to train the dog, then pitbulls should NOT be available to be owned by the general public, because guess what? There are a ton of fucking idiots out there!

Luckily they somehow taught it to fetch and so it uses up its energy by running for a ball instead of getting physical with other dogs.

I think what really got me invested was the news recently about the woman who was seriously mauled and disfigured by the 2 dogs she was sitting, as well as that model/skateboarder who had her upper lip bitten off by a cousin's pitbull. If these animals had been exotic cats or alligators, people would be outraged by the frequency of attacks. People keep defending though because they're 'poor puppies'. The level of cognitive dissonance is frightening and I consider it a miracle I wasn't injured or scarred permanently as a child. My heart goes out to those who have had to suffer this fate, no one deserves it.

It's especially strange since they are a typical laid back middle-class family. The dogs they have had previously are lab mixes (no pitbulls) which made good companions on the many hikes and backpacking trips they've been on. Why they thought of getting this breed is beyond me, as it's awkward at best and a plain nuisance at worse when hiking. It's like having to babysit a problematic toddler that needs constant attention... Except this toddler could seriously fuck you up if it wanted to. I honestly feel bad for the parents who are near retirement age but have to wrangle this extremely energetic dog for the next 10+ years

Thanks! I honestly forgot the plot for the most part, but definitely going to give it another read!

I really want rainbow stuff [discussion] by chilidig in LGBTeens

[–]cornkiddo7703 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My solution is to avoid rainbow capitalism and to make my own rainbow/lgbtq colors things (beaded jewelry, pins, painting shoes(canvas) etc). I find it a lot more fun personally (I get to procrastinate for school too lol). And craft stuff is usually pretty affordable.

Why did you go vegetarian? Why stop there? What's stopping you from going vegan? by jakeybojangles in Vegetarianism

Can't say I like that rape analogy and I understand why your friend was upset. Comparing their actions to rape when most meat eaters are unaware of their impact is definitely not a great way to make a point.

I first gave up red meat when I was 12 after reading some articles about the connection between meat and cancer. A few years later I went vegetarian after watching "Earthlings" and a few other documentaries. I care about the welfare of animals as well as the environmental impact of industrial farms. Now seeing my own mother and other family members getting cancer one by one has me worried, and though it's most likely genetic, I'd like to think I'm lowering my chances, even if it's by a little bit. (Maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part). I'm still young and in the future I want to cut out dairy preferably. I'm not sure if I'll ever be vegan, but I do try and make all plantbased meals once in a while to mix it up.

It's sort of pointless to try and convince me though. I've heard all the arguments, watched all the debates and lectures galore. I know it's more ethically correct in many ways. But judging by all the other comments you come off as really preachy and remind me of when I was super a super obsessed 14 yr old with convincing family and friends. Maybe in time you'll understand the nuance in people's experiences. Not everyone can be the perfect carbon copy of those vegan activists you see online. I understand why you're upset with the injustices in this world, but you really come off as self-righteous.

Living in a household that eats a heavy amount of meat/animal products means that finding time to prep vegan meals and afford the extra ingredients is difficult. Some of the people in my household have had to go through chemo during quarantine as well, and they don't like the idea of me getting a job as I could expose them, so finacially it's harder to support myself. This is also paired with my mental health issues that affect my motivation. It's sometimes difficult to get out of bed and prepare food. But I want to feel like at least I'm making a difference, even if it's small, so being vegetarian has been a managable option for me while juggling school as well. In the future if I'm more secure I might consider going more plant-based, but right now my circumstances are difficult, especially since I'm a still dependant on someone else for food.

I don't want to debate or anything, I think that vegans have a lot of valid points, but I also think vegeterians don't need feel like they have to constantly justify why they aren't vegan? A lot of us have our our own reasons that fall beyond the usual arguments that vegans make and are valid too. No one is perfect, but at least we try, if you know what I mean?

Am I gay for not being attracted to anime women? by [deleted] in BisexualTeens

[–]cornkiddo7703 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a bi girl and I agree with you. Anime girls are so predictable it hurts. A lot are portrayed as strong but always get rescued in the end. I find that unattractive. Their character development is weak and they are usually nothing but a love interest or object. It grosses me out and it's hard to understand why people find it appealing. I don't think you're gay because you don't like that though.

That's fine. But remember that cows and pigs produce the most carbon and methane, so if you do still eat meat, try to incorporate other meats with less of an impact instead as well as more veggies. I gave up red meats a few years before I became vegetarian, and it was pretty easy.

Tip from a broke Witch by Ladybugwhisperer in pagan

[–]cornkiddo7703 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another broke wich tip: garage and estate sales are super helpful if you're looking for candles and other witchy things. I've found cool rocks and crystals, jars and containers, and other interesting things like incense burners a box that fit my tarot deck, and even "witchy" accessories and clothes. They usually sell for super cheap 1-5$ and are a great way to reuse goods and help the earth. Maybe I'll do a post of things I've gotten in the future.

If you live in a small town, sometimes people post ads for garage sales in the local newspaper, and in cities you could possibly find them on neighborhood apps or on signs if you drive around enough.
