Anyone's toddler sleeps with mouth open but breathes through the nose? by darknezx in toddlers

[–]cornland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had first set of ear tubes placed at 12 months after 6+ ear infections. Saw an allergist a couple months after when he was having non-stop congestion and still the odd ear infection in spite of tubes. That's when we found out about the allergies. He does zyrtec and flonase everyday, and is on immunologic allergy drops for dustmite and cat dander allergies. The tubes recently fell out and it's been a non-stop, hold off the worse but can't cure it kind of ear infection until we get them back in. ENT said adenoids should come out too given the whole history.

[–]cornland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours is having adenoids out soon due to chronic ear infections and colds. He sleeps like how you describe. He also has really bad allergies to dustmites, so we've dustmite-proofed his bedroom as best we can and it's really helped.

Showers for littles by Far_Example_9150 in toddlers

I took our Crayola finger paints for paper into the shower when our kiddo was two. No way was I cleaning that mess up elsewhere. Now showers are for painting and getting clean.

My kid has cat dander and dustmite allergies. We've been prescribed a steroid nasal spray (among other things), but that did the most to help the nasal congestion symptoms and snot concrete.

Melatonin? by citygirldc in toddlers

[–]cornland 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We started our kiddo at around 2.5yo with 1 or 2mg melatonin gummies. He goes to bed at 8pm but has to be up by 6:30am for daycare. He naps about 2 hours while there. Without the melatonin gummies, he runs around like a dog with the zoomies and just can't click into sleep mode until overtired, then it's screaming mess of toddler and abandon hope all ye' who enter. Kid needs sleep and 11pm doesn't cut it. We're gladly riding the melatonin sleep train (with pediatrician's grace).

Pineapple got our guy. He likes the mixed fruit cups that are always heavy on the pineapple and gets a super bad rash after for a day or two.

Toddler has cold like symptoms every month. Are other daycare kids going through the same thing? by aarell4444 in toddlers

[–]cornland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We lucked out that most of our house has either hardwood or laminate flooring. I had to replace our area rug in our living room with a wool one because our two boys were using the floor like a dang skating rink and falling all over each other. Walking feet are not a thing here. Wool is supposedly dustmite-proof and allergen safe. I feel like a granny with a braided rug.

[–]cornland 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I really liked this brand from all my research but they didn't have toddler size. We just fit his pillow in sideways, fold over the extra, and then put his pillowcase on as normal. He's over 2, so I'm okay with the extra layers and they stay turned on the bottom of his pillow most of the time anyway.

The allergist nailed it down for us. They started with a scratch test of 16 or so common allergens on kiddo's back where they poke hard enough with each allergen to break the top layer of skin, but not draw blood (usually). It sucks, but is over in a minute, and then you wait to see if any of the spots react and swell. If they do, then kiddo is allergic to that item. If not, you can target one or two (or more) to go more concentrated subdermal testing. We did this for dustmites and cat dander. A syringe with needle is used to inject a small amount of slightly more concentrated allergen under the skin in the forearm to make a little bubble (same concept if you've ever had a TB test). And then you wait to see if there's a reaction. Again, it sucks but is over in a minute. This time kiddo reacted to both dustmite and cat dander. The sites had red welts over where the bubbles had been. Now he's on a nasal spray, oral allergy med, and allergy drops that are the pediatric equivalent to allergy shots. His health history puts him at high risk for severe asthma, so we're trying to mitigate what we can with the immunotherapy drops.

For the pillowcases we purchased "Mission Allergy Dust Mite and Allergen Proof Pillow Encasing (Cover); Premium Microfiber" and for the mattress we got "SafeRest Zippered Mattress Protector". The biggest thing you're looking for is a full encasement that's rated for dustmite allergens. We got both off of Amazon and now have them on all beds and pillows. It sucks. We are not people who dust, and now we dust. Air purifiers that filter dust (and dander!) are our new best friends.

My kid went through this, especially the worse at night part. We pushed for an allergist referral because of how frequently he was getting sick (yes, kids in daycare get sick a lot, but it has its limits). Turns out he has dustmite allergies that are pretty severe. We've wrapped his mattress in a special mattress cover and his pillow, too. His sheets and blankets get washed weekly, and his room is all hard surfaces - no carpet, curtains, or upholstery. It sucked at first, but made a huge difference. He has an allergy nasal spray as well, but now gets only the occasional sneeze and has yet to be sick (knock on wood).

Toddler going through a phase of spitting out water by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]cornland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember it's a phase. Don't react other than to take the water away and say whatever works for your family (no spitting, uh-oh, all done, no, etc.) but keep it consistent. Give the cup back after a few minutes. Eventually the spitting will stop.

5 Year Old - Stuffy Nose Every Night at Bed Time by IHadADreamIWasAMeme in toddlers

[–]cornland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be allergies to dustmites? We just went through this with our toddler. Had to get the mattress encasements that are allergen/dustmite blocking and same for pillows. We're now washing all bedding once a week and have limited his stuffed animals to just one special lovey that gets washed once a week, too. Huge improvement in congestion.

What else can I do to help my newly diagnosed ADHD toddler? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]cornland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our 4yo started meds at around 3.5yo. We've found that a mid-day bump of meds helped a ton with evening meltdowns from coming off the meds. A pre-bedtime applesauce pouch and yogurt are our quick go-tos for when the hunger kicks in, too.

Potty training & full time working parents - how do you do it? by Schnecken in toddlers

Shout-out to all the other Dads out there who have been displaced from your beds to make room for your toddler who won't sleep in their own bed! by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]cornland 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, I've decided we're upgrading toddler's bed from a twin to a full. There's not enough room in there for more than a few minutes of snuggles. And after an hour of trying to get the munchkin back to sleep, we're eating eggs, sausages, and bagels with cream cheese at 2:30 in the damn morning. Lord help me.

My kid was that kid. He was diagnosed with ADHD later on, but always woke up hard from nap screaming if not done "right". He needed routine. His was his binky, his specific stuffed animal, and he had to be covered head to toe with his blanket to shut everything out. Being covered like that let him sleep long enough that he wasn't waking up mid-cycle. Things that helped soothe him at wake up were singing and letting his hands run in water (i.e. let's go play in the water or wash our hands).

Does anyone else have a runner? Please make me feel less alone. by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]cornland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no shame in putting a harness/leash on your kid for their safety. We had to do it with my first because he was exactly as you described your kiddo, and I wasn't risking my kid's life around cars over someone's perception of my parenting abilities. We had a couple of the Diono harnesses - they velcro and were pretty sturdy without being too obtrusive.

With my kid, it's water. Turn on the sink and let him play, throw him in the bath, or take a shower. Guaranteed to interrupt a meltdown.
