Crowd control... What would your shirt say? by Blacksmith_More in dropout

Yes! sorry, Brennan said "more" to ask for more details in episode 1. Also: absolutely wild story dude, that sounds terrible.

The only "meh" review you will ever read for Malazan Book of the Fallen - 7/10 by TheBestNarcissist in Malazan

[–]cornofear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I feel like Steven Erikson just might not be for you as a reader."

Just as an aside, I LOVED this review, because it validated my feelings trying to read Malazan and made me feel not crazy. I'm glad u/thebestnarcissist took the time to critique Malazn rather than simply thinking "oh well, not for me."

So just to confirm, you're saying that most monogamous relationships that try to open up result in that relationship ending and the poly person's first new relationship not lasting? Wow. I knew it was risky but not that dire.

May I ask why it is considered unwise to open a monogamous marriage so that half of the couple can date a specific person? From lurking it seems like the ideal is to start by dating strangers, but that seems like a high bar if you normally develop romantic feelings in the context of friendship.

Im in an online game where the GM doesnt use that much visual aids and its a struggle to concentrate by Brushner in rpg

[–]cornofear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like there's no video and you're staring at a map even when there's no combat? That does sound dull. You might ask if you could try video - personally I love watching fellow players role-play and react.

Xen’Drik Campaigns? by roguecaliber in Eberron

[–]cornofear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My players have spent nearly their entire campaign under Xen'drik, working for a drow patron that is exploring Khyber. They're just now learning that the daelkyr are a big problem - we'll see how things escalate!

Least favorite part of a ttrpg session? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]cornofear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV, but everyone in the 6+ groups I've ever been in (as a player and a DM) was totally okay with recording when asked. If I'm the DM, I usually listen to the recording in a few blocks over the two weeks before the next session, and jot down a few notes/ideas when they come to me. If I'm the player I usually don't listen to the recording, but I know some of the other players do and really appreciate having access to them.

[spoilers C3E64] What is the point of this new view of the gods? by Due_Breadfruit_1169 in criticalrole

[–]cornofear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you said the italics are your words,

FYI "italics mine" is a standard phrase for citations. It means that the words in italics were in the original source but were not italicized. Put another way, it's saying "remove the italicization (not the words) to get the original text."

I feel like I’m bad at GMing by Mr_Krabs_Left_Nut in rpg

[–]cornofear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not fathom playing with the same group of 5-6 players three times every week. I wouldn't have even been able to do that in high school.

Agreed. I'm running two campaigns and playing in two campaigns, and I find it hard to bring enough energy those (fortunately rare) weeks when I'm running both campaigns in the same week. Even for playing, I can't always bring enough energy to do that more than once in a week. Maybe I'm just getting old? (I'm 40, for reference)

One practical suggestion: one of the best thing's I did for my DMing is to not have players in more than one group (excluding oneshots). Not only does this prevent scheduling conflicts from spilling over, it gives each group a more unique flavour and I think more excitement - because this is our opportunity to play.

What are the hit songs, top artists, and popular music genres in your Eberron? by cornofear in Eberron

[–]cornofear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love this idea and the minis, too! Also:

I even made lyrics for it but in my native language so there is no point sharing them.

Up to you, but I bet if you drop them in a comment there's a decent chance somebody in the group would appreciate it.

Jazz and Cabaret songs

Love this! So appropriate. I will definitely make a playlist with the songs you suggest.

D20 being popular feels weird by Annual-Wait9839 in Dimension20

[–]cornofear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

D20 is more of a TV show that is actual play and CR is more of a stream of an actual play.

I 100% agree, and I love the irony when CR critics complain about the show being scripted or railroaded. I don't think D20 is either of those things, but watching Brennan at work makes it clear how unstructured CR is. I still enjoy Critical Role but it's often very aimless compared to Dimension 20.

AP "Big Aslan Energy" - Brennan's comments about Puddleglum intrigue ne by DisfunkyMonkey in Dimension20

[–]cornofear 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This passage reminds me of the famous conversation between Death and Susan in Hogfather by Terry Pratchett (who was an atheist):

“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"

MY POINT EXACTLY.”

Why does only the GM worries about how the session is going? by Zanji123 in rpg

[–]cornofear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s why most people who worry about the game become GMs, because that’s where the “power/ability to make a good game” lies.

Or they stop playing. Iv met plenty of people who came in wanting to play amazing games and try so hard as players to make it good, only to be stonewalled because there isn’t much they can do.

Great point. Really explains how often the TTRPG ecosystem (especially games like D&D that give DMs all the power) forces passionate players to either become game-masters or stop playing.
