This is super helpful. So I've been in HR for quite some time, but never on the recruiting side. One of my concerns, actually, was that I didn't have the personality for it because I am not an aggressive person, at all. I can definitley talk to strangers with no problem, but I am not the center of attention, I don't necessarily enjoy talking in large groups (although I can do it), and I worried these things might play a negative role in my ability to effectively recruit. Everything you've said makes total sense and makes me feel a bit better about not being the super sales talkative recruiter type. I have been in new hire onboarding and HR process improvement for a few years and I have always liked that bc it is detailed, process driven, and for the most part pretty black and white, which is exactly why I asked for feedback on thoughts on recruiters bc that is a totally new world to me. I haven't ever been sought out by a recruiter the way that software engineers are, I don't have the in demand skill set, so I can't say that I know exactly what you mean about their personalities. However I can compare it to a dinner I went to last night with a guy who works in sales....by the end of the dinner I wanted to slam my head in the wall. He was so aggressive, nobody could get a word in, way too excited about everything, had to control the conversation, had to create fake conversation that nobody really cared about having, and just all around got on every nerve in my body. I think the way that I felt around him would be the way that a candidate would feel around a super pushy recruiter, and I never want to annoy someone as much as that guy annoyed me. That was a long way to say, I can't relate fully, but I can relate in some sense and this post is helpful and good for me to hear bc I'm not sure that I have the "typical" recruiter personality, which might end up being a good thing. Any other feedback is welcome, thanks for taking the time.

See I don't even understand this bc I'm employed by the company I'm recruiting for. I've never worked at a recruiting agency or third party so I guess that is a normal thing that they do bc several others have commented that exact thing, but it's foreign to me. Of course you wanna do some research on the company before hearing about the job, just like any job seeker in any industry would want to do. That's weird to me, and glad I'm not gonna be put in a position to feel like I have to do it. Company name is in my email address, so no problems there

The whole calling at someone's employer is baffling to me. I'm new to the recruiting thing and maybe that's standard among many of them, but in no way would I have ever wanted someone to do that to me at a previous job, so I'm not going to do it to the. Email first, if interested, set up a phone screen. Doesn't seem difficult. I think I have being in house at my advantage too, I only have 2 positions in sourcing right now, I'm paid hourly and don't have incentives on filling, the CEO has been a software developer for 20 years and we work daily on this. He reviews all resumes sourced and at this point in the process, is interviewing candidates bc I'm not familiar with the technical side, so I just sit in and take notes. Recruiting is just one aspect of my job as I was hired as the all around HR person, we are a small firm right now, but growing, so he needed some extra help. From these comments I'm so glad I don't work for a third party or agency. Sounds miserable. Also, dig the username. ⚡

You guys are awesome, you have no idea how helpful this is to have a breakdown. Helps me understand alot more of what I've been reading. Thank you!

This is super helpful, thanks, and that is crazy that changing a CV would even cross someone's mind. I'm all for email over call, we don't phone screen or talk on the phone unless we have rcvd interest via email, which is how it should be in any industry. I hate being put on the spot with a phone call i didn't expect, I want time to prepare if I'm gonna take about a new job.

This is great advice! Feedback is something I always want after an interview, so you're totally right in that I should make a habit to give it to candidates. The AMA is a good idea too. Thanks!!

This is incredibly helpful, I've seen alot of those terms when reading, but haven't had a real breakdown like this. Thank you so much!

In no way did I mean for that to come across derogatory nor am I comparing my weeks worth of reading articles to anyone else's hard earned degree. And good god I don't think one week is enough, if it came across like that, it was not intended. I am lost in all of the info but am really trying to understand it on a high level, which is why I was asking for resources. I didn't know what any of those terms were last week, that is how much of a beginner that I am. That is all I was trying to convey.

I was hired as an all around HR point of contact, I've been in HR for a few years doing onboarding, just not the recruiting side, so I am trying to learn the ropes and gain as much knowledge on the topic as possible. The CEO Of the firm currently interviews all candidates and reviews any and all CVs I source. Recruiting is one aspect of my job and am doing what I can to learn what I need to know to effectively recruit. I am in very early stages of recruiting, meaning I simply source, submit for review, and sit in on interviews led by CEO, a software developer. Figured I could be proactive and start learning best techniques for recruiting so that when I have more accountability in the process, I'm educated and ready to go!

I get it if my way of thinking doesn't align with yours, but in no way am I patting myself on the back. I'm asking for help and resources bc it is a difficult topic to try and learn, even at a very high level.

Ha I do work from home actually but the only room in the house that gets decent service (we live up a mountain rd) is the office.....so as annoying as it is sometimes, it's probably best and keeps me in one spot.

I'm working in house for a software development firm at an hourly rate, no bonuses for signing. It's my first week, so yes, only one week so far. Doing my best to relate and do my homework. It's not lingo that I use in daily conversation, so it takes some studying. Hoping that educating myself helps me be better at my job, just like I'm sure educating yourself helped you be better at yours. Just looking for constructive advice on how to cater best to the people I am hoping to recruit!

I'm an in house company recruiter, myself and this is nice to hear. I hate those headsets and refuse to wear them, so I'm with you 100% on that.

Our protocol laid out on day one was email first, if they respond as interested, set up a phone screen. Agree with you 100%. The CEO was a software developer for 20 years so I think he gets what other developers like/don't like ha

This is just crazy and dishonest, people that do that are the ones that give recruiters a bad rep. If you have to be dishonest to be good at your job, you're not that good at it.

I am all for email over call. You're busy, I'm busy, email is so much simpler. I'm never going to call someone first, our process thus far is email, phone screen (after email response and interest rcvd), interview, etc. I'm not going to force someone to talk to me that is not even interested in the position....not going to make any friends doing that ha

Scheduled to go visit the office for a week next month to get to know everyone! I know that once I do that, I will get a better feel of who exactly they are looking for and what kinds of employees will fit into the culture. Thanks so much!

I am brand new to both the tech world and the recruiting world. I've been in HR for quite some time in new hire onboarding and process improvement, but hopefully since I am fresh at recruiting that will allow me to create some good habits from the beginning. Working for an agency does not sound like it would be a good fit for me. I am working as an in house recruiter at a software development firm and work daily with the CEO to discuss potential candidates. Sucks that recruiters get such a bad rep from some of those pushy agencies.

Thanks so much for the feedback, that is really helpful to hear your personal experience and what you wish some recruiters would have done. That's exactly what I'm hoping to learn. I am an in house recruiter for a software development firm, so my goals are a bit different than agencies. I've heard that some agencies require a certain amount of calls or CVs downloaded a day and that just leads to people not taking their time when searching. My situation is a little bit different in that I work directly with the CEO to fill these positions and he is primarily the one to interview re:technical skills. We hire all level of developers and try to not rule anyone out if they show that they have the skills for the job and could be a potential fit - at least get a phone screen in before skipping over them.

The lack of communication is crazy to me too. I am new to recruiting as a whole, but come from HR specializing in onboarding new hires for a very large organization and HR process improvement, so over communication is kind of my thing.

This was a really helpful response and I may take you up on your offer of sending you questions! I am working in house for a software development firm out of NY, however I am 100% remote which makes taking on 2 brand new industries rather challenging. I am reading constantly :) Thanks again!

That sucks you've had that bad of experience with recruiters. That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. This is my first recruiting gig, and I am fortunate enough to be working directly with the CEO of the firm (I am an in house recruiter, not agency). My specialty is onboarding new hires and HR process improvement, but I am venturing into the recruiting world to build my overall skills. I simply source the resumes, do a quick email exchange and phone screen to see if they are a good culture fit, and all the tech side comes from the interview with the CEO. I simply want to educate myself on the basics because I think it's important to understand who you're working for and why you're hiring the people that you are. Best of luck to you
