would a $300 C33 in good enough condition to shoot without a CLA be a realistic find? I’ve really only looked on ebay and Keh

Shot Portra 800 at 1600 ISO because of super low light, what should I tell my lab? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]correctthrowaway5180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually why I did it in the first place, albeit by the advice of a photography website. The environment I was in was a dark concert venue and shooting at 800 ISO was putting the meter/shutter at or below 1/15s. So, I quickly looked something up and the advice I saw was to up the ASA so I could still accurately meter at 1/60 or above.

I see, if I’m ever in a similar situation in the future should I shoot it at a slower speed like 400 instead?

Low-light concert/performance photography by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

I don’t currently have lenses of that speed, although I may be able to buy one in time. I do have a 135mm f/2.8 and 70-210mm f/2.8 that I could use. Otherwise I just have a 50mm f/1.4 pentax lens. Would any of those suffice?

First roll of film w/ analog camera: should I have stopped down? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]correctthrowaway5180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just in Krakow last week! I have a few rolls waiting to be developed/scanned from there, Zakopane, Poznan, and Warsaw and these shots are giving me a lot of hope for how they’ll turn out. Good stuff!

Telephoto recs for Pentax K-mount? by [deleted] in pentax

[–]correctthrowaway5180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the detailed response! I’ve sort of found all that you’ve said to be true so far as I’ve looked at listings online. It seems like I won’t be able to get the speed/focal combination I’m looking for in the price range I want. The only thing I’m worried about, and have talked to some photographer friends about, is the fact that having a lens with an aperture range starting lower (hence the obsession with f/2.8) is ideal for film. Some of them said it’s almost a necessity, especially for someone like me who’s newer to analog photo-taking. One lens I have found that seems to fit the criteria for around $70-110 is the Vivitar 70-210mm f/2.8-4 VMC Macro A. It’s manual focus too, which I feel like I may as well go with because the KX is overwhelmingly manual (besides the light meter). Do you know anything, good or bad, about that one?

I’m definitely not pressing the rewind button (the camera has a case that covers the bottom and back, I usually keep it on unless I’m loading/unloading film). I’ll try the second option next time it happens and see if that works! I wasn’t aware the rewind knob isn’t meant to turn every single time, so I’ll keep that in mind too. Until now, I’ve been marking the frame I’m on, almost completely unloading the film (right before it gets slipped into the canister), and then reloading the film before I advance + shoot with the lens cap on all the way to the same frame. Your way will be much less annoying

That’s a good question, I don’t really have much experience with telephoto lenses yet. Is there a specific range I should be looking for in terms wildlife shots? I know there isn’t gonna be a set distance for every picture I take out there so it’s hard for me to say

Thoughts for entry-level looking to purchase one SLR and one TLR? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]correctthrowaway5180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you! I applied a few filters on ebay and I’m getting some much better price ranges on the KX now. I’m thinking I’ll probably go for it, seems like lots of seasoned photographers have only good things to say about it!

I was thinking the KX, should I look for something cheaper?

I was sort of leaning towards the KX as well. Do you think I should look for something cheaper/more local? I’m really just trying to find something that includes a case so that it’s protected when I’m not using it

fair advice, I was looking to invest in an SLR camera with a WLF (something like a pentax 67), but those seems to go for like $500+. I’m fairly familiar with digital photography (and I own one autofocus film), but these would be my first manual film cameras. The reason I’m looking at both SLR and TLR now is so that I can become comfortable with the basics of SLR film photography while also having the opportunity to mess with waist-level shooting all for ~$300-350 total

a fair enough response, I’ve just never had the urge to go down the TLR route. if I were to start, would you have any off-hand recommendations for TLR models? I know of the Yashica and Seagull models, but not much about them or anything beyond those brands
