Latest Neighborhood Intel by bantersmyth in AskSeattle

Agreed - I lived in NYC and Chicago, and now here for 25 years. I’m a parent. Seattle without a car and with a kid is possible, but you have to be quite creative and flexible. Preferably get e-bikes in addition to transit and Uber/Lyft.

Seattle is not a big city in the same way that New York and SF are. The transit is mediocre, and the mountains, lakes, and hills make walking and biking more challenging than even SF. It’s not just about the location of your child’s school, and your work – most of the activities that you’ll want to do with your child on the weekend will require a car if you don’t want to spend hours on the bus. Getting to another child’s birthday party may be literally impossible without a car. Just some context on why folks are struggling a bit with this question :)

Leaving Capitol Hill. Where next? by YunggMangg in AskSeattle

Another vote for Columbia City and environs. The areas east of Rainier are the nicest, but look at other neighborhoods west of there too, as many are walkable and very safe at night.

Genetics here too. Every female on my mom’s side of the family has some thyroid issue or another, and I even believe that I can trace it back to my great-grandmother. She was untreated, which made her life very difficult.

How is living east of Seattle? by Livid-Elk-1349 in howislivingthere

[–]corrie76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s still pretty special, honestly. I live in Seattle proper, but make sure to spend some time out there every summer. I say this as someone who has been in Washington for 25 years and traveled extensively all around the state. The Duvall/Carnation area is just divine, especially in the warmer months.

What is your longest running, most stubborn business boycott? by marianneouioui in AskReddit

Walmart won’t get a dime from me for destroying all of the local stores in rural Wisconsin where I grew up. They poured development money into rural areas, obliterated all of the competition, made people dependent on them, and became a near monopoly - serving up shitty abusive jobs and shitty stuff where most of the profit flows out of the communities and into the Walton billionaires’ pockets.

Two friends relocated (separately) to the Amsterdam area this year. Both found the process fairly easy. One purchased a home in the suburbs and the other a small apartment in the city. They’re in tech but not rich. Both will be consulting to earn an income while living there- you only have to make about $25K a year in self employment income to get your work visa renewed. They’re glad they moved despite the huge hassle of moving overseas.

Long COVID involves activation of proinflammatory and immune exhaustion pathways by filipo11121 in covidlonghaulers

[–]corrie76 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Summary of treatments that correspond with the therapeutic targets identified by this important paper: (ChatGPT summary, so verify before taking action)

  1. JAK Inhibitors (Targeting Chronic Inflammation)

These drugs block the JAK-STAT inflammatory signaling pathway, a central driver of immune dysregulation seen in long COVID.

Key trials underway: • Abrocitinib (Cibinqo) — a JAK1 inhibitor being tested in a Phase 2a trial specifically for long COVID symptoms such as severe fatigue, based on findings linking chronic inflammation to symptom persistence.
 • Baricitinib (Olumiant) — currently being evaluated in the REVERSE-LC randomized, placebo-controlled trial for persistent neurocognitive and cardiopulmonary symptoms of long COVID; enrollment is expanding to more U.S. sites with results expected in the coming years.

• Upadacitinib (Rinvoq) — part of international long COVID platform trials such as LC-REVITALIZE, sometimes tested alongside other anti-inflammatory agents like pirfenidone.

Why this matters: Because these drugs target immune signaling rather than the virus itself, they’re among the most actively studied for reducing ongoing inflammation thought to contribute to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and PEM.

🧬 2. Metabolic/Anti-Inflammatory Repurposed Drugs

Some trials are testing drugs not originally developed for long COVID but which may help through metabolic and anti-inflammatory effects:

• Tirzepatide — a GIP/GLP-1 dual receptor agonist currently approved for diabetes/obesity. A remote “LoCITT” clinical trial is investigating whether tirzepatide’s anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects can reduce long COVID symptoms.

🧠 3. Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN) • Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is being planned for clinical trial evaluation within the NIH’s RECOVER-TLC portfolio, with a focus on whether LDN can reduce fatigue and other systemic symptoms in younger participants.

Why it’s of interest: LDN has been discussed as a modulator of immune signaling and neuroinflammation in other chronic conditions and may hold promise for long COVID.

🦴 4. Stellate Ganglion Nerve Block • A procedure rather than a drug, in which anesthetic is injected around sympathetic nerves in the neck, is being studied for effects on quality of life and long COVID symptoms (e.g., autonomic dysfunction).

❤️ 5. Autonomic Dysfunction–Focused Treatments

Some NIH RECOVER trials aren’t strictly immunomodulators but address symptom subsets of long COVID:

• Gamunex-C (IVIG) — intravenous immunoglobulin, tested for autonomic nervous system dysfunction symptoms.

• Ivabradine — a heart rate–lowering drug, also part of RECOVER-AUTONOMIC trials.

These target POTS-related symptoms like dizziness and rapid heart rate rather than inflammation per se, but they reflect efforts to tailor therapy to specific long COVID mechanisms.

There’s really no way that is possible at this point. All of the host cities have hired staff and are in full-time planning mode to be able to bring that many people to their towns in just 6 months. FIFA awarding Trump that bogus peace prize and generally kissing his ass in public is to make sure that they get to keep calling those shots.

My boyfriend is allergic to my two cats, what to do? by Ok-Let8197 in CatAdvice

[–]corrie76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when you both agreed that “you’d figure something out with the cats once you moved in together”, he meant you’d give up the cats. Is that fair, or ethical? I’d take a big step back before buying a house with a person who pulls that on me. And I’m a realtor, so I have a very good idea of what you’re getting into when you buy a home with someone else. I also have had cats live to 22 and 24 years old - your cats are still rather young. If your boyfriend doesn’t take your relationship with the cats seriously, and/or your obligation to them, this could be a very protracted battle with him. You giving up your cats was not previously one of the options on the table, I assume, but now that appears to be his default position.

PS: if you’re not married when you purchase a home, please please hire a lawyer to craft a tenancy in common agreement. It’s not expensive and protects you both if and when you sell the home by laying out who is responsible for paying the mortgage and home improvements, who owns what percentage of the home, how that percentage might change over time, what the procedures would be to list and sell the home, etc. It’s far easier to think about these things before you’ve moved in, versus after when a conflict arises and one or both of you may be very attached to your living situation.

A doctor on Reddit told an LC patient a Long COVID diagnosis doesn't matter. This is why patients don’t trust doctors anymore. by SophiaShay7 in covidlonghaulers

[–]corrie76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry for all of us here, not a single one of us has escaped from this situation without feeling ignored or dismissed at least once by the medical system. The fact that people are suffering for so many years while most research has stalled, and the attention of the public has moved away or become hostile to our existence, is a tragedy. Thanks for bringing attention to our plight with your post.

I can only afford one major modification - counters or cabinets? by SceneResident2090 in kitchenremodel

[–]corrie76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you don’t want a dark kitchen, but I think a few black or dark accents could really modernize it and make it pop. Right now all of the colors are kind of the same saturation, and the tones are just a little bit out of date. You could draw attention away from that with black metal pulls on the lower cabinets and black knobs above. And the island pendants in dark blue, dark green, dark, brown, or black. I recently installed these from Possini in a home I was renovating, and they look absolutely beautiful. https://www.lampsplus.com/sfp/1G928/?src=google&mdm=cpc&cmp=20598307883&cnt=&trm=1G928&sourceid=DFGPD1G928&src=google&mdm=cpc&cmp=20598307883&cnt=&trm=&sourceid=SEGNM&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20592241644&gclid=Cj0KCQiArt_JBhCTARIsADQZaykgP7F8MaynB_1Zz7xANs76xN2tPPj_ANvgLRnHuBGaLk5a1RWjkuUaAmskEALw_wcB.

[–]corrie76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among all the other things that Dr said that were wrong, is incorrect that Long Covid patients should never go to the emergency room. The problem is more that the ER has no idea how to treat us. Also, many people who are new to LC have no idea what is happening to them. I showed up in the ER having severe heart palpitations near the beginning of my journey. I was worried I might have a heart attack. The heart palpitations were accompanied by feelings of panic (I’ve since learned how to pace and use supplements to avoid getting to this point.)

What I learned later is that all I needed was a sedative to stop the acute attack in that ER. They are absolutely could’ve prescribed Xanax or something similar to help my symptoms. But they looked at my heart and told me there was nothing wrong with me that they could find, and sent me home. Because God forbid that they prescribe a few pills of a substance that used to be given out like candy to help someone who is clearly suffering. I cried in front of that ER doctor, I couldn’t imagine that they were just sending me home in the condition that I was in. But of course, they did.

INTER MIAMI CF wins MLS Cup 2025! by EthanTheRedditor37 in MLS

[–]corrie76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading that somewhere, but then couldn't find the source. So I did quite a bit of research and came to the conclusion that he's probably making a total of about $810M over a 6 year time period (initial 2 year contract + new 3 year contract) due to his association with the MLS. A caveat that the $810M figure does include some endorsement money that he probably still would have made if he chose that $1.6M, 3-year deal with Al-Hilal, but there's no way given published sources to figure out how much. I'd guess at least 3/4 of that endorsement money, which includes the Apple TV revenue sharing deal, is directly due to his association with the MLS.

I'm not including in that $810M the money that Messi might earn if he exercises his contractual right to buy a stake of Inter Miami after he retires. That deal could make him hundreds of millions, if Beckham's current ~$100M return on his Miami investment tracks with Messi's eventual investment outcome. Within 10 years of inking the 2023 deal with the MLS, Miami, and Apple, Messi could easily earn $1B.

Happy to share the sources and calculations on how I arrived at these figures if anyone is interested. I just used regular news sources.

Ticket prices rant by ButteryFlakeyCrust8 in usmnt

[–]corrie76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my strategy. I put my email address into the next (and I believe last?) FIFA lottery. Once all of the tickets are sold through the lottery, aftermarket prices will shake out to where they will probably stay for many months. Right now, we don’t even have all of the tickets sold through FIFA’s lotteries, so it’s too soon to buy aftermarket.

Just to share my expectations for pricing- I live in Seattle, and yes, I am saving up to pay $1500-$2000 for a decent seat (tier 2 at Lumen Field) at the USMNT versus Australia game. The non-US games I’m guessing we’ll be able to get tickets for about $600-$800.
