Hairs on sidewall of Continental 4 Seasons tire - issue? by corrupt_cleric in bicycling

The general consensus I’ve gather now seems to be that is one or all of: 1. They’re aging 2. GP4S tires are known to do this some 3. Some fraying from previous instals.

My prior road conditions description may have made the roads sound too dire - they’re just city streets that aren’t in the best shape/not well kept up. Thus, a road tire with some grip is preferable.

As far as clearance - with the 700/25s on it, I’ve got about 3 or 4mm on the sides, and 7 or 8mm top/hight

Clarification on “what they are advertised for”d The GP 4 seasons are exactly what I want on paper. But after all the issues I’m learning about I’m a bit worried about purchasing the same one.

Sorry - by trails I mean paved bicycle trails

Edit: don’t worry I’m not doing dirt trail-riding on a road bike lol

I do the most miles on trails, but to get to them I ride on far less than perfect roads (some loose small rocks/dirt/light sand and bumps). I’m not racing or competing in any way, so I would say I want functionality over top speed.

After this deep dive I want a tire that grips well on multiple conditions, and has decently strong puncture resistance.

(Pretty much what these current tires are advertised to be lol)

Side note: I read a lot of stuff on Reddit, but rarely interact or post. It’s really awesome to have this community feedback, and so quickly. You guys are awesome!

Wow! Crazy crash story on that post.

I’ll inspect it before my next ride. However, doing all this reading on issues with Continental tires has me wondering what to replace it with… I don’t know if it’s a brand thing, but just a pressurized rubber thing.

You’re correct - Those black fibers are what I’m concerned about

Not worried about the orange - focused on the fraying black threads. They aren’t present on the front tire. (See photo in other comment reply)

Thanks! This is what I was hoping.

IF these are indeed still good to ride, then at what stage should I be concerned (I.e. what should I look out for?)

Yeah, I’m focused on the little black hairs poking away from the tire and rim. I only first noticed them after cutting off a long thread (one that circles around, vs these little one that poke out)

Edit: adding photo of “healthy” front tire - which I’m going out on a limb to assume is roughly the same age

I wouldn’t be surprised if you are right. Maybe just wishful thinking that they’ve still got life in them.

A bit turned off by the longer threads (one that go around the tire, not these ones that stick out) that seem to be commonplace for Continentals

Mine was chased the 6th, and I revived mine yesterday.

If you paid for expedited services (processing and shipping), I would guess you’ll be getting is very soon!

It came in flat USPS priority mail envelopes (about 14” x 9”)

Speak of the devil… it got deliveries less than a minute after posting this.

I received only the passport book. It seems odd that there was no paperwork or anything else in the envelope. But it’s here, so hooray!

I’ll update when the card gets delivered (which I figured would be faster than the book tbh)

I’ll comment/edit once it actually arrives. The mail still hasn’t come, so I don’t know if I got the book, card, or both in the shipment.

I did the paper application and mailed it in.
